Run a Microwave in Your Car/Van/RV Using a 12V Battery

In this video we show that it is possible to run a microwave in your car/van/RV using a 12V AGM battery.
In particular, we use a Commercial Chef Counter Top Rotary Microwave Oven. It is
0.6 Cubic Feet, outputs 600 Watts, but consumes over 1000 Watts. We unbox this microwave and test it on a shore power connection to understand its power consumption requirements. Finally, we show that this will run off a small, 1200 WHr, 12V AGM battery.
Topics and timestamps:
0:00 - Introduction
1:24 - Unboxing
7:17 - Running on a shore power connection
10:56 - Running off a battery

Hi Chris, I believe Panasonic make a microwave using inverter technology and the lower power settings are regulated.

Name your channel "Lum & behold" 😊 Minivan setup currently has no room or need for a microwave. Rear section is a "bouch" (bed/couch) that stores 6 elongated milk crates for clothes etc & sleeps me & a cute 55lb security alarm dog. I don't mind pop top and eat spaghettios for now. Nor does she. Eventually a bigger van with solar panels on too to run tv, xbox and cooler/fridge Rare times I'd need a microwave I could use a minimart or truck stop. From cold to hot to warm when it's in the truck...good enough. I live in a van, luxury isn't a necessity. Ability to travel with a basic mini hotel room & access a gym shower 🚿 is mind boggling when you do the minor math. One hotel room is my entire week with food!

excellent video, exactly what i was looking for. One question though, since we normally run microwave for a short period of time, can we start the car, and run microwave directly(via inverter, bypassing batteries) ?

I have the same Renogy power meter in my Class B. What size fuse or circuit breaker do you use? I've got my inverter wired directly to the battery, which bypasses the meter. I'd think I'd need at least 100 amp fuse, but just wondering if that is too high a potential current in case of a short circuit (which I had this past week and almost burner down the van!). Thanks for the video!

It’s a12v system with a WZRELB RBP300012 3000W 12V 110~120V Pure Sine Wave inverter , the panels and controller are rich solar brand and the batteries are 2 100 amps and 1 50 amps Miady brand You can get everything on Amazon As far as the microwave is a standard cheap 50 dollar from Walmart. Very good explanation. Small Van me too. I've experimented with different appliances and while the microwave I have a GE small inverter type is great the space it takes up is well too much lol. But electrically it works. I just can't talk myself into installing it. 500 watt heater is using 569 watts. Eggs for 1 min 50 seconds in micro is great but I'll use Nuwave induction and a pan. Takes less space. I have Ford Econoline. Thanks. Very good science. I enjoy discovering.

good Test, but just buy a cheap propane one burner to heat up water. I haven't owned a mircowave since i moved out of my moms back when i was 13. go figure. an USELESS appliance none the lest, thank you for doing the load test, at least we know a 2000 watt renogy is a good buy and AGM is OKAY it works, I've seen some LIFEPO battery's just cut power at 100 amps current on a 100AH 12v lifepo. They may last longer I guess, but in the real world how many people need that much power on daily basis. Your on the road, most of the time you will be charging the battery via the alternator. and if you do need to run a load like this just crank over the engine and have the alternator provide some of the excess energy into the system while you heat up your tea. It's only going to be like 5 minutes or gas burn, nothing really to crazy. Instead of paying 2000$ for a lifepo battery setup with 3000w solar and space taking up inside your home. A simple dual battery AGM setup with the inverter inside the glove box or under a seat might be better option and you can even get a small 100W panel and charger for the time you are not running the vehicle. I think a lot of people go overboard and buy so much solar and batteries and shit to live out of their car it almost seems stupid, you moved into a vehicle to go and see places not to watch movies and cook inside like your home, what's the point.

When you drive your car battery automatically recharges so you can hook the other battery up so that when your car battery is full it charges the other battery you can also use solar panels or if your just wanting to camp and not live in it just charge it at home

@thatguyweheard 3 года назад
Hey, not to butt in, but...many microwaves don't like modified sine-wave inverters. It scrambles their brains. Also, there may be a brief surge current that is above your inverter's rating. Additionally, the voltage on your battery may sag (in the first couple of seconds before rebounding) enough to tell the microwave to shut down. Solution? Think like Palpatine. There is never enough power. Clean power that is. Get a pure sine wave inverter that can handle 24, or 48 volts (12-volt systems are very limiting power-wise, while 24 is easy to do with two 12-volt batteries and 48 is easy to do with four 12-volt batteries. 24 and 48-volt systems are also a lot easier and cheaper to assemble ( and now come in all-in-one packages that really save you money and time)) and be able to handle at least twice the surge power of all your appliances (like, say you were to start them all at the same time). In my case, my inverter can handle 5,000 watts all day long and can surge to 10,000 watts in a pinch. This is for two refrigerators, a freezer, a microwave, and an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler deal), three computers, an ice maker, and a 60-inch monitor. I have 2,000 watts of panels on the roof and no electrical bills. I even have leftover power to condense water out of the air as a cool party trick. Remember - you can't have enough power and it all begins with the inverter. Good luck! Soon you'll be heating your supper with three hand-held hairdryers just because you can :).
