When installing an amplifier for a car audio system we need to run the power wire through the firewall of the car. What hole do we run the power wire through? How can we make a firewall hole for the positive amplifier cable? Let's take a look at the best practices!

Great as always. I would suggest running the cable down creating almost a U shape, and then back up into the grommet so water can’t run down the cable. The dip at the bottom stops the water running back up into the grommet. Just a little tip.

I want to get an 4ch amp for the speakers in my car. The two fronts are 60watts rms and the two rears are 90 watts rms. Should I get a 90 watt x 4 amp or a 75x4 amp? Is it possible to have two separate gains for the front and rear speakers?

One tip: I haven’t done my research on other kits but I purchased the Skar Audio kit and later figured out that it only comes with one pair of RCAs and only like 25 feet of speaker wire. When buying a wiring kit either make sure it has everything you need, buy additional stuff to add onto it, or do what I would look into next time and piece everything together.

i do more generalized "turning wrenches" on old cars than i do stereo installation, although ur channel has helped tremendously with the few installs that i have done... but the tape on the drill bit thang... so simple, but so genius! ...im just ashamed to admit in 30 years of workin on cars i have never thought to do that... great tip, thanx bro & god bless!

@caraudioinstallation I just spent a little extra on that same waterproof grommets and step drill bit, I got 2 very thick 2/0 sky high car audio wire that needs to be ran! Hey Mark, great video! I would just like to add one other trick that may help. After you drill the pilot hole with the small bit you can take a coat hanger or insulation ceiling tie and send it through the hole and have confirmation that you are in the location you’d like to be in. This is a little residential electrician tip that can also be applied here! Better safe than sorry. Happy installing!

I was installing car stereo systems full time for a decade, from the early 80s to the early 90's (]probably why I now have a bad back, knees, shoulders!); my personal systems in 1983-84 included Fosgate amps, Audiomobile preamp and electronic crossover, and a/d/s amplification and speakers, a Nakamichi cassette deck, a Blaupunkt radio for FM, and a home-built subwoofer cabinet with two 10" Dynaudio woofers ---- a triamplified system. Alternator noise was always a possibility with any high amplification system, and although the steering column was often a sufficiently low-resistance ground (for the radio/cassette deck head unit) to prevent noise, sometimes the cure required running a 10 or 12 gauge ground wire from the amplifier ground point in the trunk up front to the radio/cassette unit, and isolating the deck from any metal parts in the dashboard. Some cars had wiring harnesses running near or behind the cassette deck that radiated noise into the tape heads, and required wrapping the harnesses, or the radio chassis, with mu metal, or even just aluminum foil. In a worst-case scenario, an audio isolation transformer might be required to break the ground loop, but fidelity could also be affected. Sometimes it took as long or longer to solve the noise problems as it did to install the system! PS, don't forget to fuse the supply wire at the battery end; I saw several do-it-yourselfers burn up their cars by neglecting the fuse.

A spent brass bullet casing also works very good for punching a hole through the grommet. A tight grommet fit is even more important for keeping under hood fumes out of the pass compartment than moisture out.

Great tips! And great video! I never thought of using the screw type grommet even though they are common place on marine applications. Could you do a video like this one for cars with the battery located in the trunk? It's deceivingly "easy" to run power but the grounding is tricky to avoid inferences while maintaining that clean and thorough install you make look so easy. Thanks!

I use a small fiberglass arrow to feed, tape my wire to it, make about a small 1/2” cut to a grommet, and use a liberal amount of silicone spray lubricant to feed the wire through and use the wire itself as the punch. It’s speedy and almost always tight as a nun.

2/0 should be able to go through firewall! In my opinion the only time under vehicle is ok is on demo vehicles where there are several runs, you aren't fitting those under carpet. But in demo vehicles you aren't driving as much either, and many ride on trailers everywhere

I’ve watched your other video on how to measure resistance and voltage drop. I’m seeing very minimal voltage drop between my battery and amps. However, after measuring the resistance of my ground points I decided to measure the resistance from battery positive post to the distribution block in the rear of my vehicle and it was about 5 ohms. Can you explain what level of resistance you should have on the positive run to the back of the car. I’ve used 0 gauge. I plan on doing a big upgrade pretty soon, so I’m just curious about what level of resistance I should be looking for.

The manuals state to put a MAXI fuse (50 amp for 500/1) and (40 amp for 400/4) in distribution block close to the amps which I plan on doing. The manuals also state to use 4 gauge wire for the amps. I plan on running O gauge stinger power wire to the power block from the battery. I did the math equation you provided and came up with 81.5 amps but the wiring kit comes with a 300 amp ANL in line fuse. Is this safe to use or should I use a smaller ANL fuse?

I am about to upgrade my RCA's and do not know what footages I need to buy. I'm thinking a 13' for one amp and a 17' for the other. You only mention connecting straight to the battery. Is there anything wrong with connecting to the fuse box? (Very easily done with a fuse tap which can be bought off eBay, and doesn't required modifying the original vehicle). I understand that this might not be good for a large high power amp which requires a lot of current. However I am only installing a small active underseat sub, 130w RMS and 300w max, it say it only requires a 10a feed. Whats your opinion on that?
