Lydia Jennings is a member of the Huichol (Wixaritari) and Pascua Yaqui (Yoeme) Nations and holds a doctorate in soil microbiology. Her work is dedicated to environmental science and the essential role of Indigenous communities in these spaces. Her hope is to create more inclusive academic and environmental landscapes.
In place of her graduation, which was canceled as a result of the pandemic, Lydia instead celebrated by running 50 miles in honor of the Indigenous scientists and knowledge keepers who came before her. It’s a run to honor the past and present while looking towards the future.

Dr. Jennings has such a powerful story to tell! I am grateful to Patagonia for choosing to highlight a strong female trail runner who has found a pathway to be an environmental leader in her community though her doctoral work and beyond. Cheers to creating healthy rights of passages and 50 mile runs!

I lived in the Sonoran desert for over 45 years. It's a special & unique place. I miss it but it's getting too hot there.Thank you so much for working to make it better! The Pascua Yaqui are some of the most gentle people I have ever met. Congratulations on your PhD!

@7:17 "Oh you only got that because you are Native American", I felt that. It's incredible what having a mentor can do. I feel the same, I need the PhD to have a seat at the table. I applaud the work she's done and completing her PhD. You've got a seat at the table now, Lydia!!

I am writing my PhD thesis right now. I resonate to every single word Lydia says :) Long-distance trail running here in Sweden where I live is literally the only thing that keeps me going... I recently did my first trail marathon and now booked 60km race just 2 weeks before my defense :) Thanks to @Patagonia for this video, it was the best timing for me to watch it and thanks to @Lydia for being such an inspiring person and follwoing the Yaqui way of knowledge!

Love running an soil am studying Horticulture. I have been a runner since I was little. I was a sprinter and one of the fastest girls in my city. On a 4 by 100 relay, we made it all the way to the nationals. I also ran long distance and would be honored to run for this cause and also I have 33% Native American indigenous for Mexico, zacatecs. I also am very passionate to run for this cause, the soil and panting for others. XOXO

Congratulations, Dr. Jennings! Best of luck for your future endeavours as a scientist and a runner - and everything else you decide to do. This was very inspiring to me, as a first-year PhD student who grew up in an indigenous community and who's working on indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing as well. Btw, your dog is very very cute

Beautifully done! Congrats to Lydia on her PhD! It's really sad that in this day and age, indigenous people and minorities in general, have to struggle to receive higher and graduate educations. Then also endure negative and ignorant comments. Totally ridiculous.
