More snowstorm craziness!!! Having to travel on icy roads with unit #15 our Peterbilt 337 with a Century LCG12 to recover a passenger vehicle that slid off the edge of the road and was on the edge of a 20' drop off. To make it even more challenging, the car was on an icy hill in the middle of nowhere and drop-offs on each side of the road. Oh, did I mention that this was at night, by myself, in an area that had no cell reception? And another thing, guess who forgot their tire chains and ice cleats? Yeah, not a great night. Please SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

First, allow me to thank all those who were concerned for my safety in this video and those who gave constructive suggestions. Others may have missed part of the purpose of this video. In the video I pointed out the fact that there were things that I would have or should have done differently on this job. I also pointed out that I went on this job not completely prepared in the fact that I did not have my tire chains or my snow/ice cleats for the wheel lift to keep the truck from sliding. I also did not have salt on the truck. All of these things I normally carry on the truck during the winter months and they were put in the truck that same evening after I unloaded the car, before I left the shop. I was caught unprepared. I am not perfect. I am not always prepared. Nobody is perfect and nobody can be 100% prepared for any situation.... I persevered. I didn't give up. I recognized and overcame the obstacles before me. I learned from the experience and I took actions to correct the problems that I observed. To me, these were the things I hoped people would take from this video. We are all flawed and find ourselves unprepared, but we can overcome and learn from these experiences. Thanks for watching and God bless.

Also my other favorite you tuber Derek Bieri from the channel Vice Grip Garage always finds a way to fix an old car and get home and most of the time he dosent have all the parts he needs or just forgets to bring them.

On this video, we were so concerned for you, we were on the edge of our seats!! I kept saying, just leave it Ron and go home!!! It was so dangerous for you, all by yourself, in a bad spot. So happy it turned out well and you were safe. We have become the Ron Pratt viewing family here in Northern Cal. "Hopefully, this is all for the night." Haven't you learned not to taunt Murphy? One of the habits I was taught early in my EMS career was to go over every call afterwards to see what could be learned from it. This is one case where it pays off: you know what decisions need to be improved the next time.
@DarkVoidIII
@DarkVoidIII 3 года назад
In this case, the decision to recover the vehicle late at night should have been postponed to the next morning due to the slippery road conditions caused by ice on the roads, and Ron should have taken the time to have a second tow truck operator in a spare wrecker in a second truck, in case he really did end up in the ditch! The worst thing he did was recover it late at night when he was alone. That being said, he recovered properly from the mistake he made trying to side pull it, and subsequently recovered the vehicle.

I just kept thinking a few pieces of 1" rebar sharpened into stakes and a sledgehammer would have been real handy as anchors. For that matter, a man with access to a bunch of scrap axles could make some real heavy duty tent stakes that will go into any ground. Doesn't take as much as you might think: after all, he was dragging that big wrecker around with just a little car as an anchor. Might also be worth using some of the dead space under the front half of the bed to attach a permanent box on each truck that always holds a set of tire chains.

Hi Ron… I’ve been watching your videos now for about a year now and First off, I’d like to say you are just One Amazing Man…! No matter where you are or what the situation you’re faced with, you ALWAYS figure it out taking into consideration any obstacles and dangers that are present. You’re always thinking things through no matter if it’s the current situation or what could happen down the road. One of your many admirable characteristics I’ve noticed is "You are “ALWAYS POSITIVE” no matter what the situation. You are very cautious whatever you’re doing… You not only learn from your experiences but another admirable characteristic is, you take the time to share your experiences with others so that they may learn and see what someone may be up against if someone would be faced with a similar situation… As I watched this video, all I could keep thinking was, I wish I was with you to help out. There were more than two guardian angels with you that night and I was so relieved to see you finally get back in your truck to head for the shop… I wish I lived closer to you so I could help you out. Sorry for the long comment but I just had to reply and thank you for another awesome video and glad to see you recovered the job you set out to do… Thank you again and keep up the great work you do…!

I enjoy all your videos Ron. This one seemed a real challenge. By yourself, at night, no cell phone coverage, icy roads, cold conditions. Yikes! Good job!

That was the wildest recovery you have done in a long time, I bet! I have to admit, I kept screaming "chains!" at the screen. My dad taught me the importance of chains...we lived in the mountains around WIlkes-barre, PA, and there was no safe way to get to anywhere when it snowed there back in the early 1960s. My dad had a Chrysler New Yorker, and when he put the chains on that huge beast, not much would stop it. The stories he would tell about seeing cars and trucks in the ditches that he would just drive by...well, he passed almost a decade ago, but chains have been an important part of my winter driving took kit as I now live up here in Canada, and I drive a Subaru Forester...two sets of chains needed being all-wheel drive, but not much will stop it when it's chained up!

Seems to me like the best idea would've been to put it off till light and gone back and got it then when you could have people with you making sure you were safe. Glad to see that roller lead works like I thought it would. I wonder if you could put some sort of foot/grip plate under the underlift to be able to use it as an anchor when it's icy or muddy. You might also want to think about adding a pair of 4 inch square LED flood lights to the front and back of your boxes so that you can flip them on and have a TON more side light to see down into ditches and whatnot off the side of your trucks. Some logging corks might offer you some traction on the ice too so you won't go sliding everywhere. I prefer the dash cam view over the back window.

Love the footage from the dashcam. It gives a much better view of the road than using the GoPro on the rear cab window. Glad you got the job done safely (given the difficult conditions & without chains). Looking forward to the next one Ron, keep up the good work

What a recovery effort that was! That was a very sketchy one for sure, from being alone, very dangerous area, no cell phone reception, icy. That one had just a little bit of everything. And the new dashcam looks very good!

Really liked the new dash cam. Your night videos make me think about my nights on the side of the super slab taking care of crippled big rigs. Stay safe it is dangerous out there. Always remember any time you leave your lot, you have entered the most dangerous place in the world, Americas highways.

for situations like this in the future id recommend having a radio in the truck as well as one on your person in case you end up in a situation like that again, if anything bad happened you would be able to call for help when your phone has no signal

Been there done that, I'm ancient, did this in th 1970's, wished we had the equipment that you have now. The owner was great and was proactive, I worked with heavy duty down to one tons, also did the roll offs, great for allot of recovery messes. Great video Ron, I really appreciate them. God bless you and your crews families. Thank you very much, brings back allot of memories.

Ron, I am very glad you posted this video. So many people put huge effort into making themselves look absolutely perfect on youtube. What you did was show that you are a real human with real emanations, that makes real mistakes. You also showed that you have amazing patience and perseverance. God was with you on every step of that call. You stayed calm and collected, you corrected, and you overcame. You are alive and well and safe, and that’s the most important thing here.
