Runcam has released a version of the Swift Micro v3 that has the same M12 lens thread as full sized cameras. So now if you want a micro camera with the image quality and variety of the larger lens... you can have it! But does the larger lens actually look better? And Which lens is best for you?
In this video, I'll compare the Swift Micro v3 with four lenses: 2.1mm, 2.3mm, 2.5mm "GoPro style", and micro-sized M8 2.1mm.
I'll also discuss the change RunCam has made to its camera control interface, which some of you are going to love, and some are going to hate.

I know this is an old video, but anyways- I made a “joystick” (in reality it’s five buttons set up in a cross with one in the middle) controller for the uart control interface. Not really that complex, it requires a mcu, mine uses just an attiny, most of the magic is in the software. There may be commercial options now, haven’t aeen them but considering the parts for mine cost like $6 I’m sure ghey would be overpriced.

CMOS artifacts just straight out confuse my perception of detail, requiring extra effort to discern shapes and giving me headaches in the long run. Until they reach and overtake CCD in this aspect, as they did in digital cameras long ago, I will stick to the low res, low dynamic range, power hungry dinosaurs. :) It is all an obviously personal choice, glad to see in the comments that I'm far from alone.

The only problem with the micro cam/lens movement is most of us running the most popular freestyle frames(chameleons, roosters, aliens, reverbs, heyperlows) are all intended to use full size camera and fitting anything else in them is just awkward. I like the fact they put the bigger lens on it as it helps mounting them in the above mentioned frames because having the lens so far back just destroys the view. FOV means nothing when 30% of your feed is covered in standoffs, cam plates, and go pro mounts. Love the video, thanks for the test. i think i liked the top right (2.1) lens the best.

No need - if you want 4:3 CCD, Foxeer Arrow Micro. If you want 16:9 CMOS, Caddx F1 Turbo Micro. Anything that's meaningfully better is at least twice the price.

They basically look the same to me with regards to sharpness and clarity (apart from fisheye distortions). I have to imagine that the larger lens would perform better in low light since a larger lens it is able to collect more light/pixel. For daytime they basically look the same to me. I love the spreadsheet btw, exactly what I do when I buy stuff but more massive and open! Thanks!

Could you do a low light comparison? The M12 Runcam lenses have an aperture of 2.0 vs the M8 lenses with 2.8. That's a full stop aka double the light. I wish Runcam would implement a half duplex communication. Having two wires to the camera is such an overkill.

The option to use a full size lens is great, the thing i don't like about the micros is that the lens size doesn't necessarily mean the same FOV. Take the Predator Mini for example it has a 1.8mm lens but only a 110° FOV vs a proper 1.8 that is around 170° which is just confusing. I would really like to see a comparison as you did here but with different lens sizes just to get an idea of the FOV for these cameras.

because the wider lens takes in a wider field of view, then it also has a greater image span with which to perform the metering, which I find makes it less susceptible to extreme exposures one way or the other. It has more data to average across. Kind of like if you consider spot metering, which will produce huge exposure differences if the spot is for example on a dark or bright region of the image. E.g. 6:09

Currently FW of this camera allows to use either joystick or Tx to pass through camera menu. The only thing I do not like so much on this camera is one wide connector for all. Here could be the Foxeer Predator v4 a bit better, since it has "menu control" pins separated to its own connector. But not a big deal. RunCam is great camera anyway 😀👍

Been running the micro swift in the Merica. It's teeny weeny. It's ok. But I agree with you on the sensor - CMOS is awesome as long as it can deal with light changes. CMOS, as I'm sure you know, is what's used in DSLR cameras.

Pretty sure the micro eagle is cmos, too... I have two of those, and both had the sharpness so high it looked ridiculous. Who chose that as a default? Otherwise, the Eagle is very nice.

Not surprising how much more detail and edge sharpness the GoPro lens offers, but at the speeds we're flying FoV is still more important than the subtle differences in glass.

I just got mine and put it in my Diatone Gt-R90. It works really good. But you need to be careful when following the manual. When wiring it up just don’t look at the colours of the wires at the F.C. since the wire colours are the same. But the manual switches the colours in the middle and you end up wiring tx to tx and rx to rx

Is it possible to have too many products and deliver them at a rate that is impossible to keep up with? Lol IDK but RunCam really makes me work hard to keep up. Good vid Josh and once again I really appreciate your non biased and thoughtful reviews. I always speak my mind and hold this hobby to a high standard and am not easily sucked in to “hype” but is that such a bad thing? 🤔

I switched from a "GoPro Style" lens to a 2.1 micro one (or had to...) and from feeling I had said the GoPro one was better but looking at your images I now think the 2.1 is a little better. Useful information for sure. ;)

All the lens seemed very similar... except for the lens glare. That said not sure that glare can justify doubling the weight of the camera...

Nice little hidden extra with the cam control there. My cam luckily has one of those cables that break out the analog input so I just zip-tied it to a standoff next to the cam. Cam control does sound a whole lot more convenient though.

hey josh. I talked to run cam, they said the default is joystick, you have to select witch mode you want when you first plug in.

Micro Eagle with RC25G lens is the best combination for me. Great image quality, 170 degree fov without fisheye effect and with the newest eagle micro having TX/RX even OSD to change settings.

JB i just found out if you use the 2.5 rotorriot lens on the micro eagle you get the proper 170deg FOV in4:3.it seems to work perfect

They did update it now, you short out the tx/RX on the camera and it switches from uart or joystick

Idk why a little joystick board would be so hard to make for this, it’d just be an fc with special programming and a joystick input on the board right. Maybe it’s more difficult on the software side

great video joshua! I'm loving my micro swift v3 in a geprc sparrow. Perfect fit and the quality is brilliant. Prefer it to my micro eagle but thats just me! Nice alternative to the full size swift and im on board with doing away with the remote. Much easier for changing settings at the field :) the control takes a bit of getting used to but once you've done it a few times it becomes second nature

Seems like not having the analog joystick is only an issue for reviewers. Most everyone else is actually hot king their camera up to a FC.

I get that runcam is trying improve but the fact you cant change the osd on the swift 3 any other way but the flight controller is a major suck.

Been running the micro swift v1 (2.1 lens) for awhile now on my 5". I'll say the lens flair is noticeably worse on it compared to my hs1177 rig, but other than that the image is the same (both run 2.1mm lens)

Are you using the limiter on your zoom h2n? Audio in the last few vids has been pumping awful. Maybe try a higher threshold or a compressor with a 2-3:1 ratio. Love the content

Joshua Bardwell over-compressed. Day job is being an audio engineer. When the mic is far away from the source (your mouth), over compressed can raise the room noise and your speech into nearly the same volume. When you use the headset mic it sounds great cause it’s closer to the source and picks up less room noise, making the overall quality better. Solution would be to use a less severe compression ratio like 2:1 or 3:1 and adjust the threshold so that the audio isn’t constantly into “gain reduction”

Honestly I would program an Arduino Micro or maybe an ATTINY with real USB Stack to use as an USB->UART Converter and add the controls there. Guess in a month or two there will be devices as I described preloaded to do this if they have not already been developed

Good video mate , but at 70 -80 bucks Australian they get to be a bit expensive to break as a new pilot . How about a budget camera review for budget builds , bashers and new builders . Though I like the idea of camera control from you transmitter . Keep up the reviews bud , always find something to take out of them .

Would you know if the camera's OSD is compatible with PIXHAWK telemetry? That is, is it possible to connect the PIXHAWK telemetry to the camera's RX and TX terminals?

We will start to build a simple arduino adapter for the serial interface. Simply plug a joystick to the arduino and the arduino to your camera. We will post the repository over here as soon as its available.

So there not going to cater for Rc FPV Planes at all??? Huge mistake. If they go this way on all there cameras, then I'm Foxeer all the way. They will loose a lot of customers. There is NO way I will spend the time & expense & do what you did to be able to change the cam settings at the bench. I'll just spend my money elsewhere. Great review as always Joshua.

LOL! he just effectively called CCD afficionados "bloody weirdos" with that "I don't know what's wrong with you" line I haven't flown enough of each to form an opinion of which I prefer, though leaning towards CCD because it has global shutter and the rolling shutter of CMOS can give you a really wibbly picture if your craft has vibration issues.

If the cam has TX/RX pins, no you do not. You need to use a UART (TX4/RX4 or TX6/RX6).

Can you use betaflight configuration to adjust camera or Is it only threw the osd?I like this feature but smart audio and camera control now with esc telemetry is getting into a issue of uart availability becoming an issue

You can't adjust the camera through the Betaflight configurator.

UGH!! I actually stopped using the Cam control because more than once the cam settings came up when I was in the OSD settings for BF doing things like tuning PIDs...and everything got all messed up...boooo runcam..

No bug. The cam control is operated by the stick same as the new config is. So if I hold the stick to the right to change something in the BF OSD the cam settings pop up! So then I can see neither...and as I move the sticks to exit one or the other it changes the parameters on the latter.

SKIDOOSH unless I'm misunderstanding (which is quite likely), it still sounds like a bug to me. If you're in the OSD menu, Betaflight should block the camera control inputs and vice versa, and on exiting one of the systems should wait a little while before it starts accepting commands to the other. No matter what, the behavior should be avoidable.

Nope...say I am in BF OSD and I scroll down to say...my yaw P which I like at 100 (default is 70) So I hold my stick to the right to add 30 and up pops the cam settings..bug, whatever...it is a pain in the booty..maybe it will or has been fixed? IDK...happened to me twice so I unhooked the cam control wire and disabled it. I have not tried since..

Not having the ability to easily plug in a joystick and change settings will be a MAJOR Pain In The Ass for fixed wing folks that don't use a BF style FC in their builds. I can see where including a new style "digital" joystick with every camera sold will cost RunCam a few bucks but they should at least sell it as a stand alone unit.

Joshua... I'm sure you have connection to Runcam and can tell them, for such bi-dir communication it's better to make it half duplex and use single pin, it's a waste of resources - pins to use full duplex in this case, hope they listen before they sell too many of those

Im trying to get into remote mode / the menu on the micro swift 3 with no luck. Using an iflight succex f4 mini v2 stack using the rx and tx 3. Changed to runcam on the uart 3 in betaflight. I can get into the betaflight menu using left yaw and throttle up, but cant get into the runcam menu to change camera settings and disable the overlapping osd stuff i dont need

Yes but you would need to use both TX and RX pins, unlike some softserial resources that do both TX and RX on one wire.

just grab any composite cable you have laying around cut 1 of the ends red,yellow,white dosen't matter. if its not coded you can just use a multi-meter to check for video/ground. Center would be the video and the shield/outside of pin would be ground.

hi joshua i need help.. ive built my first drone and it flies but for some reason i get a major twitch at random which causes me to shoot off in a random direction and crash.i tried replicating it on beta flight but it wont do it. i also followed your 1to1 troubleshooting video with a similar issue but on the yaw axis but it still does it.. im about to give up. ive had some advice from other users commenting on another video but its just getting dangerous and not fun....

ok update i followed your tutorial again and reset everything and now it just twitches directly upwards or what ever direction the drone is facing(all the motors) its twitch is a random amount of time. first time it twitches maybe 5tf and then after that could be 50ft or more at full throttle with no control

My guess is you are having failsafe events and the failsafe is mistakenly set to full throttle. Turn on the Warning element in the osd and it will tell you if your fsilsafing.

Scoop I had the same thing happen to me and thought it was noise from motors,so soft mounted everytging..FC,motors,and even stack,and still was there,changed motors and twitch was gone,come to find out,1 of the 4 motors had questionable bearings,put some BH2207's,and it's hands down my best and fastest quad 2date:)

Why are we finding out from another channel that you have been working on a Jb signature run cam ? And maaannnn I just ordered 2 cams from them last week :( if I'd have know I would have waited for you versions :(
