on the topic of "runes don't always say something profound" I heard of some written on a cave wall, 14 feet off the ground, turns out all they said was to the effect of "this is really high".
Amber Hill There is a church down in the area where Constantinople was that has runes carved in a banister and it literally translates to "Halfden Was Here" haha
very nice! Growing up, we had a horn that just had a mouthpiece carved from the horn. There was a learning curve, but once you had it you could make a horn from any tube. I wish I still had it (house fire)
Yeah, a carved mouthpiece would be traditional and historically accurate. The trumpet mouthpiece just makes it a bit louder. I used to use wrapping paper rolls as a trumpet when I was a kid lol. Sorry you lost yours.
I always thought that the horn should sound really deep and scary...id say the best way to do that with your design is to add a tuba mouth piece instead of a trumpet one and a reed inside the horn for vibration sounds
@@TheTwilightEmporium so you feel the type of mouth piece has any bearing? I just got one today, where mine doesnt open as much as the one in this video, mine actually opens up to a hold maybe half the diameter, but its fairly long, about 20 inches which apears to be about the same length as the one in this vid. It may even be longer. And its pitch is noticeably higher. I can say if i extend my arm straight out, cup the horn end hold, bend my wrist tmso my palm is facing my body, the mouth piece touches inside my arm pit. Im 6ft its a good length horn but like i said lighter pitch than the horn in this vid. Aside from the smaller diameter of the end hole, its got a small wooden piece.
Great work!!! There is an Alemannic grave from the late 6th Century, the warrior that was buried there had a chair as a grave gift that also has writing in the elder Futhark that says nothing, just some runes to make it look he could write it seems (or for there magical purpose)
Imagine your a simple peasant living on a small farm not far from the coast. You've just finishing storing the hay for today and smell dinner cooking from the cabin. Then you hear that nose in the distance. What's medieval equivalent of "Aw, shit. . . ."?
Wanderer. You could always put a cheap brass cone around the trumpet mouthpiece if you don't like the look. Just sand the inside of the brass cone and epoxy it over the mouthpiece. Just a suggestion
A little short if you want it to be the Gjallarhorn from Heimskringla:) btw bought my second Heimskringla 2 months ago cause the one i had was from 1942 and it was a struggle to read since it was old norwegian with alot of danish in it, i got no problem reading and speaking norwegian, danish and swedish for the most part but when they mix two languages it becomes stress. It would be the same as swenglish or even spanglish. Gotta love our history.
@@TheTwilightEmporium He had kudu(yemenite) wrapped with beautiful silver work. He also has ibex and ram horn shofars. I personally own large kudu horn. They all produce more trumpet or "siren" like sound compared to cow horn. It may be because the cow horn has larger diameter.
@@ReasonAboveEverything I have a few Kudu horns as well and it is definitely a more trumpet like sound. I feel this has more to do with the length of the kudu horn as well as the fact that it has thicker walls than a bovid horn. Bovid horn walls get thin very fast, so the sound is not as rich or deep.
@@TheTwilightEmporium Oh, yes that must be the reason. If the kudu shofar is large angry man shouting then a cow horn is a dwarf male singing to himself. Rams horn would be just a gnome screaming and annoying everyone.
Horn looks amaizing with this two colour, white and black, painting. Stylish combination. Can I ask what type of paints (or oils) were used? I am trying to do my own horn and i am very fond of this painting.
I used acrylic paint with a few coats of shellac to seal it. The shellac can cause yellowing though, so you may want to use some other water based seal.
