small fact you could have added, the "curse of the mummies" was nothing more than a toxin fermenting on the sarcophagus while the mummified body rots in that enclosed space, that trapped rotten air would pretty much make anyone who gets to open one be extremely sick. that's the actual origin of that legend.
Well, the whole nordic stuff references to the danish occupation of the british Isles. Same goes for the normandy, it was a gift from a french king to the danish so They stop plundering france... Thats why They got some nordic influence as well.
Theory: Yamask aren't all dead, but instead that's just a handful of them. When they (or Cofagrigus) breed, the face they hold is the face of what the original two Yamask's human forms would've birthed. That new never human Yamask can then breed, making a tree of faces. That would explain why Shiny hunting them doesn't kill off the population.

That was just the explanation I was looking for. Thx for this comment and it makes me feel a whole lot better about breeding Yamask. Oh, and maybe all or most wild Yamask are former humans but the ones in the daycare are born Yamask which would explain why most wild Yamask do get emotional over their mask..

Well in another reply chain, someone said it’s also likely that the wolves are based on Odin’s wolves. But if we’re talking about war... Eternatus is kind of like Nidhogg. It’s a dragon of destruction slowly poisoning the world. And, if Runerigus is referencing the Darkest Day like Lockstin suggested... we need to remember it’s also called “the grudge” Pokémon. And it’s runestone depicts a red serpent. Is it possible Eternatus could escape its pokeball and bring destruction to the world? If “Pokémon Ragnarok” is a thing, I think that’s a possibility. Ragnarok is supposedly when chains are shattered and bonds are broken.
B Black well yeah... but, for example, Lunala is inspired by Camazotz, a bat god not part of Hawaiian mythology. And both Solgaleo and Lunala are heavily inspired by alchemy, which isn’t part of Hawaiian mythology or folklore either. So the theory with them and the legendary wolves has more to do with them being the sun and moon legendaries than the region they come from.

I know I'm late, but I like to think that's how Runerigus look like without their runes. If you look at Runerigus's "tail", you can see how the red markings are connected to it's soul thingy. Same with Galarian Yamask.

Just on the topic of “unwrapping parties” yes they absolutely invited fellow members of high society to desecrate sacred body’s. My theory to why galarian yamask's evolution method is like what it is, is because the stone/rock thing is absorbing it's energy which could be it's health, which is why the low health thing exists and the specific location is maybe because the stone grows more powerful in that location, kinda like how the master sword in BotW grows more powerful near ganon's presence
Or maybe it's because it can't be a fully realized/full size rune stone until it has undergone intense battle, almost wiping out it's HP, then making it worthy of a full size totem/rune stone to memorialize it's honorable (in this case, almost) "death," ... That's how I looked at it.
Yamask is my favorite ghost type from gen 5 but cofagrigus seems a bit cartoony to me. But when i saw his galar form i screamed " YEESSSS IT'S SO COOL AND AWESOME AND I LOVE HIS EVOLUTION " . Now, with your video and all this knowledge and theories about his origins, i love even more . Thank you i will stay tuned for more gen 8 pokemon origins

Yamask probably accidentally breaks a rune stone punished and cursed by removing it mask, get captures in the stone having dark power drained. It goes under the bridge and seals it become a Runerigus.
Runerigus is so great. When I first saw it it instantly reminded me of the Pictish stones I saw in Scotland. There was one I saw that had a serpent/dolphin/dragon creature that reminds me a lot of Runerigus.
I thought Runerigus was a really cool evolution for Galarian Yamask before, but this made it come off even cooler in my books. :) I’d say I still prefer Cofagrigus simply because that’s the one I have more experience with, but Runerigus is definitely (imo) the coolest of the Gen VIII evolutions with a fantastic concept and fearsome battle potential. :)
I think the saddest thing about its origin is that it wasn’t even wanted. The only reason its original trainer used it on his team, was because the Twitch chat told him to :(
Ok now I want to know the lore reasons on why Yamask can breed if it was supposed to be human. Like is a Yamask hatching from the egg ripping a soul from a living person or pulling someone from the afterlife to be trapped in a pokeball for a random 10 year old to ignore? Yes, I AM overthinking this, No I'm not going to stop overthinking this, No, I do not have a Pokemon obsession, you're obsessed.
It's entirely possible it just pulls a spirit from the afterlife. I mean, it's not like _every_ human who dies becomes a Yamask. It's also possible that Yamask isn't born from _one_ soul. It could also be formed from a collective of lingering regrets. That could explain why every Yamask's mask is very generic. There's no defined face because it's made of several soul fragments.

I'm really liking your theory on how G. Yamask evolves into Runerigus, but do you have any idea why it needs to take at least 49 damage without fainting? I've been looking around online and still can't find why 49 is such a special number
Given how Cofagrigus are described as "punishing" greedy grave robbers, I like the idea that Runerigus in turn punishes vandals. It's like these Pokemon exist as spirits of those with a disdain for crime or degeneracy, in a twisted way.
I have a runerigus on my team. Love it. Helped me defeat Leon. Well that and grinding the hell out of the wild area for experience candies so that my team were all minimum level 78, and then the three highest level members of said team were level 100 already... SO... There's that.
Galarian Yamask can be seen trying to push off the slab piece when it’s idle during battles. It also has an extra tear spot on its eyes. So a yamask is being possessed by the dark spirit of the rune. It’s super upsetting to witness.. it most definitely is not fond of the tube stone >_>
@@emc246 More so a warning man. He can get the game if he wants, it's his call. But frankly it's a waste of money. You can get the same amount of enjoyment from a let's play as the actual gameplay. That being said if any of you get the game or already have the game, I hope you enjoy it!
Depends on why you play the games. If it's to experience a Pokemon game with a new set of mons, this gen has done a really good job with the new Pokemon introduced. If you play for the story, you're gonna be disappointed. I'm mostly the former, so I liked it.

I thought the whole damage thing to evolve was to symbolise an injured soldier who was slowly getting weaker until he passed to the after life under the cool shade of the stone over head with the restless spirit rising again to continue fighting for it hasn’t lost the will to live.
Theory: dependant of the region , if a person dies in a way , they become yamask but in different regions they hold different objects to hold that relate to their past life. For example some yamask in other regions can have a weapon , statue , stone etc.
my theory is that the stone draws in yamasks power as it is damaged, but yamask regains it when healed. when you get to the stone structure, which i believe contains even more dark power, though slumbering. when the damaged yamask goes to the stone, the dark power gets absorbed recreates the missing pieces, while fusing with the yamask. that is how the yamask turns into runeragius.
I absolutely love Runerigus. To be honest my first impression of the serpent on the runestone reminded me of Quetzalcoatl as it's also often depicted as a serpent.
Another country with loads of Scandanavian (Viking) influence outside of Scandanavia is Ireland. Several cities and towns in Ireland have names from that classic Nordic (Norse) language. The most prominent being Ireland's capital city, Dublin. Dublin's name literally means "dark pool" and that gives a very big hint as to what it was like before the onset of the industrial era in the area. Ireland hasn't gotten a Pokemon world equivalent yet, and I honestly think it should. Ireland is what people from outside the country call it, inside is a different story. The native name for Ireland is Eire (pronounced air-uh and/or ahy-ruh and/or ahy-ree), any one of those pronunciations make it sound like a Pokemon region, the second pronunciation in particular.
I’m a bit late, but regarding it’s evolution method, it’s also possible that the Dusty Bowl was the ancient quarry where the runestones came from. It could be that the stones themselves are stimulated by their presence in the area, or that the Yamask feels drawn back to its original “home”.
There WAS a plot, right? Uh, the hero and his annoying "friend" Hop go around Galar getting badges hoping to defeat the unbeatable Leon and his fanservice Charizard while Sonia tries to find out about the Darkest Day, which turns out to be caused by a giant Thanos chicken that was awakened by Rose. Ok, that's barely a plot. ROFL
This was my first shiny of SWSH, that was caught turn one with a Crit capture. Oh and it's a square shiny. Also to note, was my first Yamask of the day, my second that I caught in my playthrough.
@@dogglefoxkvk Even if 'egregious' is part of the name, it's spelled Cofagrigus, not Cofagrigious. There's clearly a hard -GUS sound at the end, you just need to read it out: Co-fa-gri-GUS and Ru-ne-ri-GUS.
One of my first initial picks for a playthrough to be honest. I personally prefer Runerigus to Cofagrigus, and the lore behind it solidified my choice.
also, notice how yamask has another tear drop now. maybe the first one represents mental pain, and now it has a tear for physical pain? 'cause, y'know, the whole possession thing.

Perhaps try this idea. A person damaged a runestone or perhaps a series of people damaged one, when they died they became a stereotypical yanmask. Due to themselves being cursed they were drawn to the destroyed pieces of the runestone becoming a part of it. The curse eats away at the yanmask creating more and more suffering to the cursed individual. Runerigus could serve as a guardian for unbroken runestones or serves as a reminder, a warning if you would, for other people to not damage any remaining stones.
