Variability in runner’s dystonia treatment 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃
This weekend I went for a run along the beach, which I rarely do (it is so hard to run in the sand!) but the whole time I was thinking about my friends with runner’s dystonia and how important one thing is:
Variability
In this video as I was running I incorporated several types of variability including:
- Surface-different inclines and types of sand
- Cadence-running over obstacles (this also made if fun, I felt like I was in a video game avoiding some of the jellyfish along my path)
- Speed-running at different speeds, especially in the water
But there are loads of way to introduce variability. I ave broken them down by our pie chart framework so you can do it multiple ways:
- I think about the sensory system especially
- Touch
- Proprioception
- Vestibular
- Visual
- Smell
- Hear
- I think about autonomic
- And that can be cardiovascular
- It can be your breath
- It can be your overall nervous system regulation
- I think about motor control
- Posture
- Pathway
- Starting stopping
- Fartlek
- Pace
- External focus
- I think about the lifestyle, psychological and environmental pieces
- Where
- What time
- What you wear
- Who you are with
- The situation
- Can you introduce play into it
- Can you run without a time constraint or goal
- Can you run for a different purpose
