I got a runner’s high after my 32 minute Half Marathon PR at the Philadelphia LoveRun on 3/24/24 & yesterday after my early morning 3 mile EZ run…it was a little chilly & had rained earlier ❤
Wow!!! A 32 minute PR!!! You're AMAZING, April! I'm not surprised you experienced the runners high during your race, but am surprised you felt it on an easy run! Lucky you!
I prefer morning runs but I tend to do as much of my daily routine at the house first and then next thing I know it’s mid day. Actually works in the cooler months as it can warm up a few degrees by mid day.
I prefer the early runs but reality is i can mostly do late night ones. And yes, that pleasantly tired feeling after early workout is reward on it's own.
I still get the runners high, alot actually. After every long distance run and or tempo/speed runs. Mine last thru the day and I'm hyper afterwards. Like even if I'm exhausted, I'm still hyper and feel good. Going for a tempo 9 mile run after I eat something. Oh yeah! Good info in the video.
Great stuff, Matt! I'd say that I get ideas and solve problems more often when walking. Running tends to occupy my thoughts when I'm running, maybe because of the intensity of the experience or because it's a subject that I spend so much time reading about and thinking about. And I find that an easy morning shakeout might help me to feel sharper and more alert during the day, but after a big morning effort I feel like I've already accomplished all I need to do for the day and it's harder to get motivated for anything else. I'd rather have the big run be something I look forward to, a treat that's waiting for me when I've gotten the other stuff out of the way. I've had what I might call a runner's high a few times. The ones I remember most vividly were cool, damp days when breathing was easy and I could run hard without overheating, and I wasn't paying much attention to the scenery because it was all grey and misty. I was only aware of what was immediately around me and I hit a zone after about an hour where the sense of effort went away and it felt like I could go on indefinitely.
Your memory of your runner's high is well described here. This is precisely how it has been for me which, only now, I am realizing why it's been so elusive for me; it's not cool enough here! To show how memorable it was, It happened for me in January 2010. That's the only time I really remember feeling it. I laughed at your comment about feeling like you've accomplished enough during the day on the days you put in a big effort in the morning. This is exactly why all those memes about runners being so fresh at 6am but by noon they've crashed and are good for nothing else!
@@its_Matt_B_ That must be quite a memory if you could nail down the month and year that easily. I'd have to dig through my paper logs to find the runs I'm thinking of, but it would have been late 90s or early 00s. I remember that one of them was 10 miles in just under 71 minutes when my PR was a low 66. I was moving well but not red-lined. And yes, it seems like it took just about ideal conditions, getting to a pace where my mechanics were most economical without having to fight for it.
@@largeeddie Your 10 mile race just a few minutes slower than PR pace seems to fit with where the flow-state would have been. My memory isn't really that good but this was a memorable day in my running life (probably the most memorable). It was January 10th, 2010 at the Disney Marathon and I ran 2:52:51: a PR at the time that I would only break once 5 weeks later. It was so cold in Orlando that there was ice on the ground at the water stations where people were spilling at they ran through. I finished 32nd that day and was interviewed by someone at the finish (I've no idea who). It was also my late dad's first and only marathon. I finished that race wishing thinking I could have kept that pace for longer. 😀
@@its_Matt_B_ That's a great race result and a great memory I'm sure, especially since your father's a part of it. From one member of the one-and-done club to another, well done to him.
@@its_Matt_B_ 😂 actually I got my self motivated and got most of my chores done because I have an appointment midday so I’m determined to get my run done! I do prefer earlier runs I just never seem to get to them. I struggle with knowing I have chores before I do anything for myself. But here I go!
