💡 NOTE: MacOS higher than version 12 requires a CPU with AVX2 instruction support
01. Download a MacOS Sonoma .iso archive.org/search.php?query=...[]=mediatype%3A%22software%22 OR create your own • Create Almost Any MacO...
02. Download KVM OpenCore bootloader github.com/thenickdude/KVM-Op...
03. Extract the downloaded KVM OpenCore bootloader .gz file
04. Upload the Sonoma and KVM OpenCore .iso files to the Proxmox ISO library
05. Log into the ProxMox web UI
06. Right click the ProxMox node name ≫ Create VM
07. Type MacOSSonoma in the name field, set the VM ID to 1400 (unless 1400 is in use) ≫ Next
08. On the OS tab, set the Type field to Other and select the KVM OpenCore .iso in the ISO Image field ≫ Next
09. On the System tab, set the Graphic card field to VMware compatible, BIOS field to OVMF (UEFI), Uncheck the Pre-Enroll Keys checkbox, Check the Add EFI Disk checkbox, Machine field to q35 and the SCSI Controller to VirtIO SCSI ≫ Next
10. On the Hard Disk tab, set the Bus/Device field to VirtIO Block, Disk size field to 64, Cache field to Write back (unsafe) ≫ Next
11. On the CPU tab, set Cores field to 4, Type field to host ≫ Next
12. On the Memory tab, set the Memory to 4096 ≫ Next
13. On the Network tab, set the Model field to VMware vmxnet3 ≫ Next
14. Verify the summary and click Finish
15. Click the MacOSSonoma VM ≫ Select Hardware from the left sub-navigation menu
16. Click Add ≫ CD/DVD Drive
17. Select the MacOS Sonoma .iso downloaded earlier ≫ Click Create
18. Select the MacOSSonoma VM ≫ Options ≫ Boot Order
19. Set the KVM OpenCore disk as the first boot option ≫ Click OK
20. Right click the ProxMox node name ≫ Console
21. Run the following commands in the terminal
edit the VM conf file, change 1400 to the VM ID for the MacOSSonoma VM
nano /etc/pve/qemu-server/1400.conf
22. If running on an Intel CPU, add the following line to the bottom of the .conf file:
FULL STEPS ON GITHUB LINK ABOVE
23. If running on an AMD CPU, add the following line to the bottom of the .conf file:
FULL STEPS ON GITHUB LINK ABOVE
24. Press CTRL+W and search for ,media=cdrom
25. Delete the ,media=cdrom from the two attached .iso files (KVM OpenCore and Sonoma) and add cache=unsafe
26. Press CTRL+O, Enter, CTRL+X to write the changes to the conf file
27. Back in the Proxmox web UI, right click the MacOSSonoma VM in the left navigation pane ≫ Start
28. Click console in the left sub-navigation menu
29. At the OpenCore menu, select UEFI Shell ≫ Press Enter
30. Type the following in the UEFI shell:
change to the Sonoma.iso, the disk number may be different for you
fs0:
launch the MacOS installer
System\Library\CoreServices\boot.efi
31. After a long initialization sequence the MAC OS Setup should start
32. Select Disk Utility
33. Select the VIRTIO Block Media ≫ Click Erase
34. Name the drive MacOS ≫ Set the Format to APFS ≫ Click Erase
35. Click Done ≫ Close Disk Utility
36. Click Install macOS Sonoma
37. Click Continue ≫ Click Agree ≫ Click Agree again
38. Select the MacOS disk ≫ Click Install
39. Wait while Mac OS installs files, the VM will reboot several times
40. Select your Country or Region ≫ Click Continue
41. Confirm your languages and keyboard layout ≫ Click Continue
42. Click Not Now on the Accessibility screen
43. Click Continue on the Data & Privacy screen
44. Select Not Now on the Migration Assistant screen
45. Select Set Up Later and then Skip on the Apple ID screen
46. Click Agree ≫ Agree again
47. Enter a name, user name, password ≫ Click Continue
48. Click Continue ≫ Select Use or Don't Use for Location Services
49. Pick a timezone ≫ Click Continue
50. Uncheck Share Mac Analytics with Apple ≫ Click Continue
51. Click Set Up Later on the Screen Time screen
52. Pick a theme ≫ Click Continue
53. Welcome to MacOS 14 Sonoma
Configuring Booting Without OpenCore Mounted
01. Log into the MacOSSonoma VM
02. Launch a web browser and download the KVM OpenCore EFI folder github.com/thenickdude/KVM-Op...
03. Download MountEFI from GitHub github.com/corpnewt/MountEFI
04. Start LaunchPad from the dock
05. Search terminal ≫ Click Terminal to launch it
06. Run the following commands in the terminal window
cd ~/Downloads/MountEFI
chmod +x MountEFI.command
./MountEFI.command

Great video, we have finaly a working VM, I need just to mention that 4 core is not enough, 8 recommanded, same with the RAM 16 min, otherwise the VM will have a lot of lags

Another FANTASTIC video and instructions. Only a couple things which did not match up for me - but got it all going. One thing which jumps right out at me, SAFARI gives nothing but blank black web pages. No matter what URL I put in, I get a black web page. Also just tested MAPS - that is not working either. Nothing but black screen.

Thanks for this tutorial! It worked for me. Took 3 1/2 years to install, and honestly it runs like total dog shizz on my proxmox host, but will work well enough for some home lab stuff.

If getting any issue (infinite load time at first VM startup), try using 8core and 8GB (not more) Or it may be because of other VM using CPU.. dunno, but do not overlap CPU usage if it's the case

Hi, great tutorial! When i try to execute the boot.efi, the shell only spits out that it doesn't recognize it anywhere. When i tried ls to look around the iso there isn't any directory with system or anything, only cam_apple_mobileasset_macsoftwareupdate among 2 other similar directories, is my iso borked or am i missing something?

You mention skipping the Apple ID setup. Is that because you weren't interested/willing to use those services, or can you not associate a virtual machine with your Apple ID? Just want to understand if you just didn't want to, or if it's unsafe to do so due to Apple wanting to register the "iMac Pro" you're logging in with? Might be kinda nice to be able to manage Reminders/Calendar from a VM; maybe even send an iMessage or two...

Mine one has a blank white screen at the moment with no dock after vmware tools install and it's running really slow. I have 8gb ram, and 1 processor with 6 cores assigned and 80gb. This is on a i9 12th gen, ddr5 ram and nvme pcie 4.0. On vmware workstation pro 17.5.Any idea how I can speed it up? as I wanted to play around with it.

Thanks for this. After I do these exact steps, and I click Start for the first time (step 27 in your list) to boot into OpenCore, Proxmox immediately gives this error: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1" Any suggestion on what caused this error, and how to fix so it starts into OpenCore as it should?

It's worked like a sharm for a couple of months. Now Sonoma boots with 1 and only 1 core while before it worked with 8 cores. Any Ideas? Thanks

been trying to simply install proxmox 8 on a nvme on msi x99 motherboard. get installer errors or times when install completes but proxmox only boots into grub saying must load kernel first. x99 is infamous for being eccentric. vanilla debian 12 would not complete installation either. i will try to install a normally booting proxmox on a sata ssd then clone it to an nvme.

Upon completion I always have 4 devices appearing to select from ie; macOS, Recovery 12.6.7, UEFI Shell and Reset NVRAM. Is there a way to auto select macOS or is this even normal to appear each time I boot? It does get into the OS which is great but it would be nice to bypass this.

At 3:44, I can't type a colon in the UEFI shell. Either my VNC connection through Proxmox, or the UEFI shell, does not recognise SHIFT key and I only type a semicolon, which obviously returns an error. How come this just works for you?

@@cjbht19minaret no, the other shift key did not work either. None of the modifier keys work. I only experienced that fault in Firefox though, haven’t looked into it yet. It only happens in Proxmox guests, through VNC.

I have an AMD Ryzen 5500U CPU and it has AVX2 capabilities. Will it work if I just copy the AMD command line in the .conf file? And how long does it approximately take? I left it the whole night and the bar didnt move at all (right after running the boot.efi file), because I selected the Intel CPU command by accident. Ohh and I'm using the older Ventura OS, not Sonoma.

I am using an Intel NUC with Proxmox VE 8.1 installed. When I first start up the macOS installation, after the apple logo, it shows a mouse and a trackpad image alternating, and seems stuck there. Is it asking for connecting to a mouse and a trackpad on the NUC? I did that, but the problem is not resolved. What could be wrong?

Added a USB device "Apple Magic Pad" in the Hardware section of the VM and started the VM installation again. It worked this time, but I had to connect a trackpad and a keyboard to the NUC physically to operate the installation. Is there a way to use the client computer's keyboard and trackpad where I am accessing the Proxmox web UI from?

you need to remove every -device arguments in your .conf file of your MacOS VM, and add this line just after -smbios type=2 : -device qemu-xhci -device usb-kbd -device usb-tablet I juste made it working again with this change and no problem after that :)

"Pre-enroll keys" must be unchecked, if anyone having this issue, delete the EFI disk in "Hardware" and then add it again, ensure to uncheck "Pre-Enroll keys", that was my problem

@@i12bretro yea thats not fixing it. I tried multiple vms and same result. The bug comes from the date and the time but im not sure how to fix that in proxmox. Ive changed the date in terminal but by time u start the install it changes it back to default.

I can get all the way to step 39. However the install complete, but I am NEVER able to enter Sonoma successfully. After the VM reboots, I return, repeatedly to the to the MacOS recovery screen. This after displaying the "Your computer restarted because of a problem." screen. How can I troubleshoot this?

Recheck your config, there's an issue somewhere. You can also try starting the vm from the proxmox shell (qm start %vmid%) to see if it gives an error that helps pinpoint the configuration issue

You can use the area on local. I have a smb share setup on my Windows server to put ISOs on, which is what I show in the tutorial.

Try assign 6 or 8 cores to VM. This is what helped me. I read that osx doesn't like when number of cores is like 5 or 7 or 3..

the moment I try to boot the iso. I get the apple logo, the progress bar starts, then the VM auto reboots. Cannot get to setup. Ideas anyone?

Make sure your CPU supports the AVX2 instruction set. If so, try another ISO

Use ls to output the file system, try any other mounted file systems (fs1:, fs2:, etc), if it's still not working try a different iso file

It’s nice but I use an older Fujitsu server 19 inch. I have a Geoforce 5700 xt gpu and total failure to passthrough it. Any suggestions?

You need to start with a GPU that MacOS supports. Apple dropped Nvidia support several versions ago

@@i12bretro thanks for answer it’s a AMD GPU and supported by Apple RX5700 XT. My RX580 and 590 do not match by size to the server. Main problem I see. Is that the mainboard is a double Xeon but max V2 Xeons LGA2011 this CPUs have AVX1.0 and not AVX2.0 it boots but downside seems no more passthrough. Not with my skills. At least the sense is to use beside the server as Davinci Resolve Render Server. Advantage is double CPU and 400 GB RAM lowcost at least. With 10 or 40 GBe Network. So I can use as working machine an 100.-€ Thin Client.

@@haraldfielker4635 Just found a Fix : you need to remove every -device arguments in your .conf file of your MacOS VM, and add this line just after -smbios type=2 : -device qemu-xhci -device usb-kbd -device usb-tablet I juste made it working again with this change and no problem after that :)

No, there's no GPU acceleration. You can pass a physical GPU to the VM to get near native performance if you have a supported GPU and hardware

Try switching to different filesystems (fs1: fs2: etc). It's possible your install disc is mounted to a different identifier. Otherwise, try a different iso

I downloaded ProxMox to install MacOs on one of my servers in my home lab, but I’ll stick to VirtualBox… that install process looks terrible, just for a operating system that may or may not put you through a boot loop or not work at all.

Do you have Ventura or Sonoma booting in VirtualBox? I haven't gotten anything working in VirtualBox since Monterey, always run into kernel panics

It worked for me. Virtual box doesn’t run at the hardware level which is a huge problem.

try changing amount of cpu cores, mine worked with only 4 or less cores. You can change amount of cores after installation completes

8 hours stuck at apple logo after fs0:. (i7-6700 with 6 cores, 16GB ram, 200GB HDD) Tried another ISO, same :D. Then i changed it to 8 cores and passed the apple logo in seconds. So dont use 6 cores :D

How do I make the MacOS guest VM full screen? I click full screen but there are still black spaces in top and bottom of the display. I tried on MacOS but it only gave me 1920x1080 Unknown Display option.

I followed all the steps, and I'm stucked after doing System\Library\CoreServices\boot.efi. Apple logo pops up on black screen..... and nothing after. Am I missing something? EDIT : as said by @yanikakhmet, don't use 6 cores!
