Running and Gunning Tracking a Buck on Snow | 2020

Last year I made a tribute video to honor my friend Bill who took his own life in 2015, the same year I got my first buck weighing over 200 pounds. Bill is the one who got me in to tracking. A couple months before this season, I received Bill's hunting rifle (Remington 7600 30-.06) and 5 of his last rounds. I used his last rounds on this hunt and killed the buck in this video with them.

Well, when I was a young man I read the book too, and this was a passion of mine to hunt on the track and kill over 200 lb deer where I live in Maine, and what people don’t understand is when you are tracking, it usually takes more than one shot to get them, you’re not sitting in a tree which is how I have hunt now due to age and back injuries, sitting in a tree is like stealing, when they come out, and they don’t see you and if you can shoot, they’re done, tracking is a completely different way of hunting, and especially in Maine, when you’re tracking, the deer don’t run across an open field, they hit the cover, or up a mountain through the most dense cover you can imagine, I shot one just like that on the side of a mountain north of Jackman one time, blew his leg off and about 30 yards later I hit him in the lungs, and he was done, I too thanked God for that majestic animal he blessed me with that day, and every other one I have shot since, there is no purer way to hunt then on the track if a big bruiser like that, good job young man, and I especially liked when they asked if you wanted the big buck patch and said no, very humble, and anyone that has any negative comments here probably never tried tracking a deer for a week on the side of mountain on snow or understand how difficult it is to make a clean shot on running deer through thick brush, here’s the thing, you can’t them if you don’t shoot at them.

Bullshit. Real hunting woods? I’ve killed more deer in my life than probably you and your entire family. This guy shouldn’t video his recklessness. This is an animal that deserves better. He just shoots at a deer he jumped like a mad man, taking a very high risk shot, WOUNDING THE DEER BECAUSE OF HIS RECKLESSNESS. He should lose his license to hunt. Can’t stand people like this. For the record, I’ve killed 27 bucks with a bow and I’ve lost count of my gun kills. I’ve wounded deer and I chastise myself for any minute mistake I’ve made, causing that to happen. Please don’t glorify this clown. He’s reckless and he acts like he jacked up on caffeine or something. This guy is why some people hate hunting. He’s a jackass and someone could legitimately say that he terrorized that deer with his recklessness. The way he was hunting was making it highly LIKELY HE WOULD WOUND A DEER AND CAUSE UNNECESSARY SUFFERING. Videos like this a bad for all of us.

How many of you people track down bucks in the snow???? Zero. Learn before you speak. Look up Hal Blood, Richard Bernier, the Benoits, Larry Benoit, the Salerno’s of New York and then spend some time in the art of tracking down and killing big bucks. You might then be able to understand.

Great footage and what an awesome buck! I was reading through some of the comments and of course there is always some negative input. Humble is a great word and the only way to conduct business. 7 shots 9 shots 1 shot - the bottom line, you shoot until the deer is down or until the deer is out of sight. Hunting BCBs is not easy and most experienced trackers know that sometimes you’re going to go through some rounds in getting that buck. A tracker that can close the distance on close to a dozen bucks in a season probably doesn’t care about the negative inputs a whole lot. Keep up the good work and success. See you on the ridges!

Did the same thing to a buck a few years ago, but with his back leg at his hock joint, he bled like a hose. Followed his blood for about 100yds, he ducked into a thicket of cedars, I knew their was a cattail slough on the other side so I hauled butt around the thicket and caught him just as he was climbing the ridge on the opposite side of the slough, put one right through his back between his shoulder blades. Easiest drag ever, as he was about 10 yds from a logging road.

@@TheMaineWoods I have killed them with all calibers , and bullet weights , I prefer after 500 or 600 white tails , that I don’t use anything less than 200 grains because that is exactly the weight bullet that stops deer cold when a guy does not make a perfect shot , and this happens more times that not.

I have only hunted the North woods once in my life. I know if I have a clear shot, and I have already hit the deer once, I will shoot again, if it is not down. It's easy to be an armchair quarterback and judge. Take this with a grain of salt, but maybe after the second shot, slow down. Don't push the deer so hard. Also, make each shot count. One time, when I was still young, I dropped a small buck with my muzzle loader. As it was running away It started to get up, and I drew my Super Blackhawk and knocked it down again. I ran up to It quickly and fired again. Some how my single action revolver had fired all 6 shots. It happens. Congratulations on a very nice buck. And your thanks was directed in the right direction.

@dp5430 3 года назад
There are some deer around but the quality is not there. The dnr blames hard winters and i agree that it partially contributes to morality. However they bow down to the animal activists and politicians about the wolves. Our moose population is destroyed because of wolves also. The dnr trys to build the deer population back up so we have lots of bucks only areas or very limited antlerless tags. Lots of yearling bucks get harvested. I dont blame the hunters because hunting is about puting meat in the freezer. Our age class and bucks to doe ratio isnt what it could be. Its very eye opening when I'm archery hunting in September and the deer are acting like the rifle season just finished (very skittish). We just have to many wolves and they need to be managed.

@TheMaineWoods
@TheMaineWoods 3 года назад
If it wasn't effective I wouldn't do it, it has worked many times now with mature bucks. If I bust a deer but it doesn't see or smell me, the blow is very effective at stopping them because it makes them think I'm a challenging buck especially if it is a buck with a doe because he is expecting to encounter a rival coming to steal the doe. I also have nothing to lose at that point since the deer is already busted. Hope you have fun this year.

So well done. Very exciting to go along with you. Here in Michigan I would have pushed hi by a dozen hunter’s. Done the very same when I lived in Montana. You’ll get your exercise now!!! Great hunt!!! 👍👍

Hunting in snow covered land is next on my list here in Canada. You have to be in good shape to chase a fast moving animal. This sure is a good hunt....maybe too many shots but still good.

What a great buck. That has to be some tough hunting. Serious miles you put in to get that buck. I've never hunted in terrain or a situation like that so I won't judge since I can't put myself in your shoes. I do question in my ignorance of your situation the ethics of hunting this way. But once again, I'm not in your shoes and I'm able to hunt where it's a one shot kill. Congrats on a fantastic trophy!

That's a fair statement, tracking and big woods hunting is extremely misunderstood in the whitetail hunting community. I didn't invent this way of hunting, I recommend these books; "how to bag the biggest buck of your life" by Larry Benoit and "tracking big woods bucks" by Hal Blood.

That over-the-shoulder camera is great for this kind of hunting. Wish more people would use it. Just a thought - if it were possible to put a start-stop switch down on your vest or somewhere easier to get to it might be a good idea. Thanks for the video. Great Buck!

This hunting method seems to be a real NE US style of hunting. It is interesting and it seems even the pump action rifle was specifically designed for this kind of hunt.
