First time I came across this MLP. Makes the subsea stack look freaking tall. Had to do a google search and came back with MLP=Mud Lift Pump, which I guess is an essential component from Dual Gradient Drilling (DGD).

The blowout prevention system being used is the same as the one on deep horizon's drill platform. At the top of the assembly is an annular valve, which uses a rubber doughnut seal to cover the port between the wellhead pipe and riser pipe that goes to the surface. On the deep horizon's annular valve the rubber doughnut seal was damaged and failed to seal. Horizon crew activated the blind shear rams that are designed as a back up. The hydraulic ram is designed to crush/cut the wellhead pipe and seal the flow off but also failed due to the pipe getting bent by a massive "kick" or Pressure spike. The pipe wasn't in proper alignment and the hydraulic rams didn't completely crush/cut the wellhead pipe closed. The flow was able to pass completely through the blowout prevention system and through the riser pipe and onto the deep horizon platform where explosive gases that come up with crude found a heat source and the result is an explosion. 9 years later and the same type of blowout prevention system is still in use by all ocean based oil production drill platforms. Even if this type of blowout prevention system worked as designed would still leave the wellhead sealed only by crushed/cut piping. Since the design has no way of isolating pressure leaves the sealed well and cannot be repaired as any attempt will cause a spill. It's basically a time bomb. I'm a mechanic employed on Alaska's North slope oilfields in Prudhoe Bay at the Kuparuk river unit, working for a company subcontracted to conoco Phillips. I also have over 30 years experience in pipeline repair sand maintenance. I'm also the designer of the caphead spool used to stop the deep horizon's macondo well spill. On June 20, 2010 I watched news coverage as the horizon spill response crew used underwater robotics to cut bent sections of piping away from the wellhead. This left several feet of wellhead pipe sticking out of the seafloor. The wellhead pipe also had a flange inches from the pipe end. From that I designed a caphead spool that could be lowered onto the wellhead pipe and secure by using locking lugs or wings that would lock on behind the pipe flange. At the bottom of the caphead using hydraulic chevron seals that use the wells own pressure to force the chevron seals down sealing the spill. The flow of crude and gases could now be directed to the surface where it could be recovered onto a barge or tanker. Once the flow is controlled could be overpressured by using a downhole pump and inject a sealant of cement/slurry into the wellhead until full. The caphead would remain in place until the sealant hardened stopping the deep horizon's macondo well spill. Later found out on the same day that BP had a website and phone number and were asking for assistance. I called and spoke with the horizon helpline personnel and let them know that I had a caphead design that would stop the spill, they asked to see and I submitted via email but neglected to file for a patent pending number. Later the "horizon helpline" personnel emailed me back stating that my design was unusable. When I tried calling the horizon helpline I found that it had been discontinued. Several weeks later I watched as my design caphead was lowered onto the macondo well stopping the spill. Later emailed BP and was told that since my design wasn't patented they claimed it belonged to BP. I still have copies of my design submitted as well as emails to and from the horizon helpline to verify the caphead used to stop the deep horizon's spill was mine. So basically for my contribution I was slapped in the face and brushed off. I tried finding legal representation but was unsuccessful and still have a claim against BP with the BPCLAIMS.ORG. For the last 7 month's recovering from a shoulder injury I received on the job, had orthoscopic surgery and left ample time to go over the current blowout prevention systems and surprised to see still in use 2019. This type of blowout prevention system leaves the door wide open for more spills as it has several problems. It can't isolate pressure and is incapable of being periodically tested to verify it will work properly when needed. The design is not able for repairs if it is not doing it's job. It sits on the seafloor and no one knows if it'll work properly until needed. I have designs that will isolate well pressure, as well as pressure and flow control valves needed to do the job as well as be tested and repaired. This eliminates the possibility of spills and means the well can be returned back to production after repairing. My designs are not free and will be patented. The cost of upgrading far outweighs the cost of loss of life-environmental damage and spill clean up. "007".

Your statements are simply untrue. "It can't isolate pressure and is incapable of being periodically tested." It is designed to isolate pressure. It certainly can do that. Testing as well. It seems like you're confused about the function of the BOP. It is employed during drilling to serve as a secondary barrier to the primary method of well control (mud). It is not required once the well is completed and producing, it doesn't stay there forever. The BOP should be tested before subsea instillation and can be tested during drilling operations by pumping kill mud into the well, isolating the BOP and pressuring it in place on seabed.

Great ani-vid, but it should be a reminder that repetitive or routine actions/steps taken or assisted with advance technologies (science) lead to catastrophic results. It’s those tragic results that either end human endeavors or advance them.

the fundamental cause of the BP oil accident was faulty wiring within the batteries of some module on this BOP structure, someone switched the poles. This way the entire structure was overloaded right away and there was no stopping

@@davidevans3227 yea my man thats electronics for you, if you have one faulty transistor in your laptop you can say goodbye to it. but you are right thats a bad device, atomic bombs have like 3-5 of such safety barriers, but I guess it wasn't the case here ;)

I never understood how the bop doesn't just tumble over with a water current :D :D Or why is it not possible to just leave a buoy at the top of the riser and leave the site with the rig if there is a hurricane, and then after the hurricane come back to the riser. Can someone explain these to me, I am interested in off shore drilling, but I'm not an oil amn so I only have rudimentary knowledge on the field.

..isnt it attached to a pipe that keeps going down? i think in the case of the deep water horizon for example, the bop was a mile down, but the pipe then continued down another five miles!! roughly.. but also, surely it's attached to the ocean floor too??
