Really liked this one, and I like the real world case examples. My running club often does hill sessions when we meet once a week, they are hard but I guess very beneficial.

Are you suggesting I should be running up more hills then?

Great video and I’m aware of the need to run hills, but what should I drop to fit them in? Intervals on Tuesday, tempos on Thursday, long run Sunday with every other day “easy runs”. Oh, parkruns on Saturday of course. 😀 Rest day is Wednesday. While I look to improve at every distance, the most important to me is 5k, I’d love to get under 19 mins this year. Once I’ve got Manchester Marathon out of the way, should I do hills instead of “normal” Intervals, or drop the tempo’s? Or perhaps alternate between intervals and hills on Tuesdays?

I suggest do a hilly long run every other week based on my own experience currently. For Sunday long runs I alternate faster runs or marathon pace effort 1 week with slow+elevation the following week. Finding it helps mix things up. And maybe hills on a recovery run if you can find them

James, the recovery time should be longer, at least 5 min best 10 min. If the you think you do not have time then do not make hill sprint/workouts. Do strides instead. The recovery time can be used for easy run or core/legs training. 1-2 min is not enough recovery time if you want to be 100% recovered. For downhill turn around and run/walk backwards. This is not as hard on the knees.

I think the short recovery time is a key factor in the sprints, it conditions your heart and body to recover quickly as in a race you won't be resting for long periods but maybe a min or less. Also you'd be out for 1 hour yet only covering a few kms. I'd suggest running downhill to strengthen your legs unless you do have knee issues already, as if you don't this may become an issue due to lack of strength in your legs

5% is good .then zero for down hill.....1min each x 5 ...then increase volume & intensity gradually....👍
