BTW, HUGE warning. In video he says it'll save the password for encryption in keychain so don't worry about it. I spent 12 hours spenting up a windows VM, i didn't write down the random password it did cause it said it'd save it in a keychain. The very next day I boot it up and it ASKED for that password, it was NOT saved in keychain and 12 hours just gone. Write password down or don't random it is my advice to you.
This! 👆 I wasn't doing VM ware of course but something else. Never trust that the password will be saved to Keychain. 99% of the time it will, but... Bugs.
Honestly, the performance of Windows 11 on ARM via Parallels and VMWare fusion just makes me more excited about the new Snapdragon based laptops being announced soon. Windows on ARM's compatibility layer has gotten so damn good. I remember when you couldn't run *anything* on it, even on Apple's hardware, because the translation layer was too slow or just didn't work.
FYI: If something x86 doesn't run, try this: Right click on the executable (.exe) Properties -> Compatibility -> Change emulation settings Change "Default" to "Strict execution" or "Very strict execution". I don't do gaming, but I had to switch to "Strict execution" to get some video editing software to work. I hope Broadcom doesn't start charging for home use of Fusion an Player. VMware is now owned by Broadcom. Thanks for the video! I just updated to 13.5.1.
Yep, i try this all the time if the developers don't have ARM-specific version of their software.. However, no matter how much i try this, 3rd-party AV products will not work... as they need kernel access. I think Microsoft really wants users to use to use Windows Defender. I've also heard ClaimAV will work, but haven't tried it. ZoneAlarm, TrendMicro, AVG.... even MalwareBytes all fail setting to "strict emulation" to try and run installer. And Sophos Connect Client just fails outright..,. Use OpenVPN instead. I think the problem with with a small market on ARM. developers are either slow to act, or more likely just not interested in converting. The bigger bucks are in x86, nor ARM, so they will go where the money is.
For those who have the error "time out EFI Network", just click on the VR when you reboot it and spam spacebar to lanch windows before the error appears.
Wanted to play Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen before Dragon's Dogma 2 release on my Mac mini M2 Pro base (10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16 GB RAM) and tried Crossover first but was unhappy with the performance (lots of micro-stutters, some glitches and a non-consistent FPS). Tested using D3DMetal and DXVK and different in-game settings. Now with Fusion, I'm getting a mostly locked 60 fps, settings in high and running at 1440p. Set the VM to 8 cores and 8 GB RAM and the game runs smoothly, mostly locked to 60 fps. There are a few micro stutters when first loading a scene, but is otherwise a better experience for this game - I'm intrigued if others are getting a similar experience
4:37 It’s still good to write it down and keep it for the time of running the virtual machine again. Sometimes VMware likes to ask for this password in order to open the virtual machine for the second time and not saving it in keychain despite the option to do so toggled on.
Not really representative comparison but I was asking the same question to myself and I've just compared on my own using the game I recently wanted to check out on Mac (original Assassin's Creed from 2007, DX9 version because it performs better). Mac type: Mini M1 16GB, both VMs have assigned 8GB of RAM and 4 cores. All other apps closed. Settings: 2.5k resolution, highest graphic settings with medium shadows & details. Location: first "open-world" in the city. Parallels 17 (notice not the newest version, rather old one): ~35-50 FPS, rarely freezes. VMWare Fusion: ~25-40 FPS, sometimes freezes and drops to 15-20 FPS. So in my test Parallels has better performance, the newest Parallels version probably has even bigger gap. On the other hand, as a *FREE* software, VMWare works really nice. However, if someone has Parallels licence then I stick with it.
@andrewtsai I have been running VM Fusion on my M1 Mac but using the Beta Windows 11 which doesnt have all the functionality. This video is for a clean install. How would I update my system to have the full version of Windows 11 - BTW running VM Ware 13.5.2 THANKS
Thanks for this. I use Crossover to launch steam and game on my Macbook Pro but installed VMware Fusion with Windows 11 so that i can update the firmware on the Dualsense (I don't have a PS5 yet).
Were you able to connect the controller? I've been trying to connect a DualShock wirelessly but I can't get it to input to the virtual machine. Or rather, it does but Steam instantly quits when I do so.
@andrew tasi , can you do an update video for VMware Fusion as it now asks you to register with Broadcom Customer Support. Once you've registered it seems you have to search through the KB to find out how to install VMware Fusion. Which a really frustrating experience and I'm still trying to work it out. Can you do a video on this, please?
I NEED HELP, for no reason the boot manager appear and says: Attempting to start up fron: + EFT UNware Virtual NUME Namespace (NSID 1)... No Media. + EFI Uluare Virtual SATA CDROM Drive (1.0)... No Media. + EFI Network...
Hi, can you tell me the performance you get from it ? i mean i already used parallels and it was decent what about this? (i want to play some very light pc games)
@@DimitrisAravopoulos I haven’t played much in Windows but I will say the performance is very good. If you can list a few free games I can try to run them :)
Its good to see VMware is *finally* getting it together. Took them 2 years to have the MS check, but better late than never. They claimed the hold up was due to VMware licensing with Microsoft. but i reckon the better explanation is they were busy with Linux support first as well. Vmware as a company is quite small which surprised me, knowing they also do ESXi. That's the kind of businessss you'd actually "want" more employees, not less. It doesn't make sense Parallels got this within (1) year 2020 of M1 release and working 100% perfectly, while Vmware even today is still lacking shared folder support.. Its got 3D acceleration, but that's about it for this update... Not much to be happy about as the main issue is still missing.
@Andrew you might be interested to know that you can point your VNWare Steam set up storage to the same location as your CrossOver 24 installation storage and the games can be accessed without reinstalling.
Apple has to write and pay for signed drivers for that. And they won't do It. Microsoft has to enable end-users to purchase Windows 11 ARM licenses like we do with x86-64 PCs. They won't do it as they only sell that license to manufacturers. And they have an exclusivity deal with Snapdragon, too. It's been four full years since the first M1 and we are still waiting for any of them to do something about it.
If you set it up for Work or School you can skip the whole Microsoft Account shenaningans. Just do Work or School > Sign In Options > Domain Joined Instead and that's it. You will be prompted to create a local account.
This is great news for me. I picked up a ROG Ally for PC gaming, so I only need Windows for a handful of Windows only productivity and utility software. Any chance you could do a video on importing a Parallels' VM/VHD into Fusion?
I thought they were incompatible with each other.... You would probably have to covert, rather than import.. When i downloaded insider preview, i used various tools to covert from .VHDX. to .VMDK.. Ideally any pre-configured OS Microsoft makes available, they would always want to learn toward Hyper-V (their own product anyway) Edit: I gotta go back and take another look at 13...
For example world of warships does run through vmware fusion but not through crossover. I assume its the same for the other wargaming titles like world of tanks.
@@destructodisk9074you have to buy them ?? Just thinking.. If you already have Windows games, why buy Mac version of the same game if there are options available... (abiet performance loss), but still fully functional under PortingKit, CrossOver etc. Its easier to get games working under Windows than it is under others... or for those that just don't want to figure stuff out... like me,
This is such a useful video (and the others too!) My question is about port forwarding, should I be setting them on my Mac, or on the virtual Windows running in it? Many thanks.
Great video. I am a VM beginner so these questions might sound stupid: 1) Is that portion of the RAM permanently allocated to the VM or just when in use (I assume the hard drive space is permanently allocated)? 2. How much hard drive space shall I allocate to the VM to run Windows 11, Office Pro and not much else? Someone says 64GB, some others say no less than 80GB. Thanks!
What i cant fix is the mouse camera isnt working properly in the games. Its an ol dx9 mmo game tho, when i hold right mouse to change camera it goes all the way up or all the way down. Any idea how to fix it? I tried different mouse profiles in vmware settings
while using parallels i could not run fortnite due to a problem with anti cheat and i also could not run more games like valorent cod and more so does vmware fusion have problems with thoso games or no?
HI, I have a ISSUE and that is that the downloading bar shows that the download is complete but the text still it is downloading esd File. I tried changing language and version but didn't work. Pls tell me any solution.
I did this several months ago and when get it work I forget it. It is still on my M1 Air. In fact I need windows once per year to run one self developed database application compiled decades ago as 32bit for XP . I had idea that old or any other intel/Win compiled programs will not work on arm windows. Juist today I did installed Libre Office for 86 windows as well my mentioned XP 32bit app. Both worked and I am still surprised they are working. Win for arm has nothing like Rosseta2 . I am bit confuse here. How is this possible? In fact I noticed that VmWare Fusion working under Rosseta on M1. So: Libre Office for 64bit/X86/Win, running on Windows(64) for ARM, which run on Fusion as Intel app on Rosseta2 on M1/Sonoma.
I follow all the steps and when I want to download windows I get this error : "Esd2iso tool could not get SHA and ESD URL for Windows 11 Professional version for en-us language from Microsoft". Try selecting other languages and the same thing.
@@hesfialtes I was able to find a solution, here is the link so you can do it, I followed the steps and it worked. The problem is that you can't download the operating system directly, so what you do is to download it manually through the terminal.
At 4:39 you select "create new virtual disk". If I am using Parallels and am running Windows through it already, can I select "use and existing virtual disk," choose it, and have it work properly? (all my installed apps intact, etc). Then I could delete Parallels (and stop paying for it).
Hello, for me it says "The guest OS type cannot be changed until the virtual machine is shut down." how do i shut it down, I have tried all method, but there are no chnages
when the Windows download installer try to start on the VMware shows an error that says: Could not connect 'Ethernet0' to virtual network '/dev/vmnet8'., any idea to fix this?
In device manager I have Base System Device and Universal Serial Bus (USB Controller) entries that have no drivers, any idea how to resolve this? - This is on a M Class Mac using Windows 11 Arm
I've used Windows 11 native on UTM and VMware 13.5.1 on my M1, and both are about as fast as each other, because there running natively. UTM does boot slightly faster though. (cold boot), but nothing to cheer about.
Could you do some testing with NX or solidworks? The m1 is doing fine with normal parts, but has difficult times with free form and assembly’s with over 400 parts ^^
Thanks for the tutorial!! no problems for running VMware. But, i can't play AoE IV on Steam with my mac studio m2 max it said: CPU with AVX support required! IS there any other ways?
I just added a PSA about this, but yeah if you lost password gotta delete VM and start all over. I think video needs ammending that you don't need to remember password cause it's false. the software actually fails to create a valid keychain so ones it expires out the first session, which to me seems to be about 24 hours, it'll ask for password again and it's NOT saved in keychains and then your VM is just useless.
Is it just me or does discord just run like super slow on VM fusion and parallels? And it is like just discord? Because everything else works moderately well.
When I try to go to the eval page, I get a blank page with a button for Cookie Settings. I can't get by this page. I tried with Firefox, Brave, Chrome and Safari.
Is anyone getting this message when trying to download? Esd2iso tool failed to get ESD url and sha for Windows 11 Professional version for en-us language from Microsoft.
I Like buy fusion 13.5. I have tryed the trial version but, Im frustrated when I use the application in full screen, the menu pop ups from mac when I go with my mouse in windows to the top of screen. This is really stupid. Is there any option to disable the show up the menu? Also in full screen when I use Safari on mac, Same stupid problem. I don't like it
how to get more than 63GB in windows? got it working but not much use if you can only have 63gb. got it full within an hour re downloading all my stuff
Is this now better than the UTM option? Specifically for graphics? Games would be cool but I'm more worried about being able to run Solidworks for school.
amazing video it worked for me but how I am struggling now is to upgrade the spec of the vm iv done all in the settings but when restarting the vm its still set up with the same number of cores, ram and hd iv seen the unallocated space but the option to claim it with the c drive is grey.. if you could drop a video explaining how this can be resolved that would help greatly regardless keep doing what your doing bless up..
4 sure. 👍 . VMware is the truth . I just wish I could afford an M3 Mac with all the extra GPU and CPU cores and all that extra ram to see what I could get away with.
Hi Andrew, please update this tutorial, they changed it. For me, it is stucking at downloading windows 11, when it complete de progress bar. They also allowed to use the Pro version for free, when it is for personal use
Andrew, what’s your opinion of Whiskey, the free alternative to Crossover? I’m currently using it but there are some things I feel I might be doing wrong to get certain titles to run.
When you run Windows like this, does it work fine if you have a dock with mouse etc connected on extra ports, and especially... if you have an external display connected on the dock via miniDP for example? edit: I guess yes since you are still within macOS. For Linux Asahi though I think we need to wait for the external display over USB C.
