As a runner, my primary focus should be on producing horizontal force to power my gait cycle action.
When we run, we never ever think about producing vertical force, and no matter how we may try we can’t avoid it, as it’s a direct result of the horizontal force due to the levers of the ankle and hip.
Working to be better at producing vertical force does NOT get us to the finish line faster and actually makers our gait inefficient and uneconomical.
I sometimes ask the question “how many squats does it take to run a marathon?” To get the point across.
The reason being that vertical force gets us absolutely nowhere without horizontal force production yet horizontal force production gets us the vertical oscillation we want and need and minimizes it to only what we need.
That is why horizontal force production is what created a longer stride yet without over striding!

This is an excellent explanation of running gait, and very clearly explains issues I have had with mine. I’m working on these changes with the Sling Method, which is very-well researched and very detailed.

If you compare it to cycling, where the most force is delivered stomping the crank downwards supported by bodyweight, but if you train to wind the crank circularly on the small sprocket where stomping doesnt help you, you will also be faster on the big sprocket transferring more circular force without that much stomping.

Simple response to the title: no it ain't! F=ma, not F=mv. You move your legs horizontally when you are running, but (apart from acceleration and to overcome air resistance) you don't exert any force horizontally. Ask Newton!

Genius! How important is a strong push off (using ankle / calf) as you’re lifting the foot off the ground, to increase horizontal vector?

I would normally agree but I learned that at top speed u must focus more on vertical force to work with gravity and cover more ground . The horizontal force comes naturally with the vertical force due to the force of pulling the leg back🥇🤝

Endurance runners aren’t in the slightest bit concerned with maximal speed. I’m guessing you didn’t watch the video, where all of what you mentioned was explained in great detail. Vertical force is not the concern at all due to the powers of levers. 👍

@@theslingmethod but the slower you run the more vertical force becomes the main component and horizontal forces become less of a factor, there are countless scientific studies that show this. Maximal speed requires more forceful push which requires more horizontal force, jogging does not.

@@DMGC529 “less of a factor”…sure. Less of a big factor is still a big factor. Focusing on horizontal force production via internal rotation negates lateral forces and improves the entire running biomechanics.

@@theslingmethod Fair but then why would you say horizontal force is MORE of a training priority than vertical if vertical is a bigger factor (as you just confirmed)? That doesn't make sense. If you had to choose one, you'd get more bang for your buck if you focused on your vertical force production.

Why do distance running athletes use the hex bar deadlift to increase their stride length? Because it creates more vertical force. What you’ve done is teach us how to march 🫡

@@theslingmethod I guess Mo Farah completely misunderstood everything when he won the 2018 Chicago Marathon and broke the European Marathon Record … twice. Maybe he would have run sub 2-hours with the sling method. (Clapping hands).

@@theslingmethod the ability to produce horizontal force relies on the ability to first produce vertical force. Think about a pogo stick - It produces a vertical force. Now give that pogo stick a knee & an ankle and tip it forwards a few degrees -> congratulations. Your pogo stick now applies a vertical force to a horizontal plane. But even if we agree that running is indeed a horizontal force, vertical force production per unit body weight is the single best predictor of any given sprinting or running athletes potential speed. Ryan Flaherty has proven it hundreds or even thousands of times by now and the results are clearly backed by force plate treadmill research. You could *possibly* argue that your method could produce a very competitive speed walker? Your method is strengthening the phase of the gait cycle from terminal-swing-to-ground contact.. think about that - you’d be super strong driving your foot from mid-air down towards the ground, but once ground contact is made then what? Sling method doesn’t help after that point.. because you need to then extend the hip of the stance leg.. you know.. kind of like a squat? (Impossibly slow clapping hands)

@@michealGRuns you’ve literally seen ONE exercise from The Sling Method…one single exercise of one part of it, and made massive assumptions. Again as I said initially, completely misunderstood everything about what was being said. The more you argue the more it just shows that you’ve misunderstood it and continue to do so. Now you don’t even get a slow clap, the hands are missing each other almost as poorly as you’ve missed the point! 🤣🤣🤣
