Running the Xilinx ISE on an M1 MacBook Pro

I demonstrate how to setup the free Xilinx WebPack ISE using UTM on an M1 MacBook Pro. Niceties include networking, natural scrolling, copy+paste between host and VM, virtio hard disk, virtio/qxl graphics acceleration, and host-VM file sharing over AFP using the netatalk service within the VM. Finally, a short demonstration of synthesizing VHDL for a Xilinx XC2C64A CPLD and generating an XSVF file for programming is included.

This is the best video tutorial I found in many years doing "computer stuff". The only problem I had was getting the Netatalk tar with wget but managed to download it through the browser. Thanks a lot for this video: super-helpful! I hope every video tutorial was like this one.

Thank u so very much for this tutorial!, ISE is working perfectly on my laptop; i'm gonna be working with a Mojo v3 spartan 6, i haven't got it yet, so lets hope that the VM detects it whenever i manage to get it haha.

awesome work. please post videos on these two toppics 1. Installation of vivado on M1 macs 2. How maintain softwares/packages that are been downloaded as source code and then installed.(i usually end up deleting them accidentally)

i have a problem with the simulation because it generate an error "No 'ISE' nor 'WebPack' feature version 2013.10 was available" and I donjon know how solve that

Hi, I own intel macbook pro, but I just followed your tutorial anyways because this is the only xilinx mac install video I found. It seems like it's working for now, but do you think there will be a problem because of my macbook not using M1 chip?

No I think it should work fine, in fact faster than M1, because the Xilinx app is intel-native anyway.

Can you passthrough Xilinx USB Platform Cable and use it in UTM?

In case someone is wondering - it's working. I'm running UTM + Oracle Linux with Xilinx ISE installed on my Mac Studio. I can passthrough USB Platform Cable and program devices without any issues. Sometimes it's a little finicky and it doesn't recognize the cable but usually it's enough to just restart the VM and it works okay then.

Unfortunately that will force you to pay extra allowance from iCloud. Without that the conversion from vmdk to qcow2 will be impossible.

you have to download it directly from the site because that link if you search it it goes to nothing, so yeah you have to download it from the site and then "unzip", next you have to search in the terminal for the folder like this: ls -> cd Documents and then if you transfer the folder to documents you will see that it is there, then you can go with the normal process: line 4 (./configure.....). Hope i could help.

make sure the drive data.qcow2 is selected

delete the existing drive and mount the data.qcow2 which has the boot partition

I tried parallel but it seems like parallel doesn't support emulation so all disk images must be an ARM operating system. I think the only way now is through qemu, maybe Wine could work with the Windows installer.
