Bamboo gets a pretty bad reputation for being invasive and difficult to get rid of, but it's important to know that there are thousands of species of bamboo and only some of them have an 'invasive' tendency. There are two basic types of bamboo: running and clumping. There are many different running varieties that are beautiful, and are great to use if you have a very contained area to grow them in. Running bamboo grows underground like bermuda grass, but with much thicker roots. This makes it hard to get rid of if you ever find that it's causing an issue. Because of previous bad experiences with this type of bamboo, many people will warn you not to plant bamboo at all.
On the other hand, there are also many different and equally awesome varieties of clumping bamboo! Clumping bamboo only sends up new shoots from the main 'clump,' meaning it keeps itself contained and won't take over your yard. We've now had personal experience growing both types of bamboo, and wanted to share that experience with you!
If you are interested in growing bamboo, do some research on which species will fit your yard's needs. If you live around the Phoenix area, definitely stop by Dig It Urban Gardens (www.digphx.com) for some great clumping varieties, which is where we got ours! :D
