Bamboo gets a pretty bad reputation for being invasive and difficult to get rid of, but it's important to know that there are thousands of species of bamboo and only some of them have an 'invasive' tendency. There are two basic types of bamboo: running and clumping. There are many different running varieties that are beautiful, and are great to use if you have a very contained area to grow them in. Running bamboo grows underground like bermuda grass, but with much thicker roots. This makes it hard to get rid of if you ever find that it's causing an issue. Because of previous bad experiences with this type of bamboo, many people will warn you not to plant bamboo at all.
On the other hand, there are also many different and equally awesome varieties of clumping bamboo! Clumping bamboo only sends up new shoots from the main 'clump,' meaning it keeps itself contained and won't take over your yard. We've now had personal experience growing both types of bamboo, and wanted to share that experience with you!
If you are interested in growing bamboo, do some research on which species will fit your yard's needs. If you live around the Phoenix area, definitely stop by Dig It Urban Gardens (www.digphx.com) for some great clumping varieties, which is where we got ours! :D
Have you grown bamboo? What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comments!

Long story short I have 2 types of large running bamboo 2 types of dwarf variegated running bamboo, 2 types of clumping bamboo. Due to living in a cold climate I was told they wouldn't go crazy what a fool I was to believe such madness running bamboo is so so so so so so so aggressive once it gets going. The running bamboo is great for steep slopes that you don't want to mow which living in the Appalachians it's 👍! On the other hand it needs room to literally run that's why I spend the first half of summer in my neighbors yard pulling shoots lol

Yikes! Running bamboo definitely has good properties, but for most home gardens, we would never recommend it. Hope yours stays a little more contained in the future!!

I agree with thorhale you better be digging those chutes. It will be a monster just growing stronger under the ground. My neighbors running bamboo came into my yard and I ended up have to rent a bobcat to the tune of $500 to rip it out. It is tenacious.

It's too bad not every plant grows so readily, right? :D Thanks for sharing!

Some of your bamboos looks very dehydrated, with partially browned leaves. Bamboos needs a lot of water. I guess Arizona is quite dry, so make sure to keep them hydrated!

I was this close to ordering Black bamboo Moso. You have me rethinking that idea. But i don't see any clumping bamboo on Amazon...what a hassle. I thank you for showing the reality of it tho.

If you can grow bamboo in a trough or planter where it has no access to the surrounding soil, then a running variety may be OK for you. Try a different online retailer, maybe one that specializes in bamboo? Hope you find one that's right for you!

I am really surprise your HOA is okay with woodchips as your yard cover, mine will send me a noticed as soon as they see a pebble out of place. I also recommend digging out any runners. I had a friend in California who let it run too much, he was sued by his neighbors and so he had to dig a trench all around the bamboo and place a 5 feet tall barrier so the runners could not get out. That was the only way he could assured it would not spread, even taking the plant out would have not guaranteed that no other runners was still around.

That dog barking in the background... I hate Homeowners you don’t control their pants. Number one reason why I don’t live in a crowded neighborhood. Thanks for the video was very informative!

Is it safe to plant clumping bamboo, fargesia robusta without hedging?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
We have no experience growing that specific variety, so we can't really comment. However, if it is a true clumping bamboo, why not give it a shot? :)

@jetson2075
@jetson2075 4 года назад
Even agent orange dropped like in Vietnam wont kill the stuff. Just dont pl;ant it. Only one runner needs to cross your barrier and that one will turn into thousands of unwanted plants.

🛑 STOP. With the round up don’t you know the latest on it? it causes cancer and is toxic do not use round up please. Especially if you have small children or pets
