Running Whitewater on My Dog’s First Paddling Adventure and a Stop at a Blacksmith’s en Route to Pick Up a New Hudson Bay Axe: Beginning at my homestead, my buddy Kyle and I portaged the canoe and our dry bags down to the river. Our plan was to tandem paddle numerous whitewater rapids on this paddling adventure which would take two days to complete. On the way, we'd stop at Black Smith Chris Johnston's off-grid homestead and forge. Chris lives along the river and operates a small business called Adventure Forge where he fabricates Hudson Bay Axes and Tomahawks among other things (see Chris' links below). Additionally, it was my dog North's first ever canoe trip (North is 8 months old) and this was no ordinary canoe adventure, it's an advanced level whitewater trip! To boot, it was my friend Kyle's first whitewater canoe trip too. Kyle is a northern bush guy who's worked as a prospector and is no stranger to roughing it but he's never paddled serious rapids in a canoe before. Needless to say, things could get interesting on this one as the Upper Magnetawan was flushing at a solid, 60 cubic meters per second.
