Runrig are a Scottish band formed in Syke in 1973 by brothers Calum and Rory MacDonald. Donnie Munro joined the following year and he became lead singer. This version of the song Loch Lomond was recorded in Balloch Park which of course stands on the bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

Others have explained a bit of the history behind the song. Second time I believe you have teared up at a Scottish song {Flower of Scotland}. It's not simply about the loss of true love as in one dead taking the low road and one alive on the high road, it's a metaphor for the Scottish people's love and pride for their country. It's a pride most nations have but particularly nations who are or were oppressed as Scotland is still today. It's based on an event in history but it's about the country, Scotland, the culture. A big virtual hug from bonny Scotland Island girl.

The song is based on a letter written by a Scottish partiot who was arrested and sentenced to death by the english for refusing to give up his right to independence, the letter was his last to his wife in Scotland, I will be in Scotland before you is reference to his soul being in Scotland before the letter arrives to his loved one due to his execution.

I think it was about scottish soldiers who were fighting against the English being taken to London to be executed, there families would travel down to London to say farewell, in scottish folklore they believed that once you die you your spirit returns to the land you were born in, but you travel there underground, the low road, and the families would obviously travel back to Scotland on the normal road, the high road

The song is about the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. The Battle of Culloden took place on 16 April 1746, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. A Jacobite army under Charles Edward Stuart was decisively defeated by a British government force commanded by the Duke of Cumberland, thereby ending the Jacobite rising of 1745.

@@IslandGirlzHaveFlow05XBS two Scotsmen are captured and held somewhere in England. They are told one of them is to go back to Scotland, the other condemned to death, they have to decide which is which. Mental torture. The voice saying "I'll take the high road" is euphemistically saying he will stay and die, that's why he'll be in Scotland before the other guy, but he'll never meet his true love again on those bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. It's a poignant and emotional song, even though not so many people know what I just told you. It's probably why it had you tearing up as well, on a subconscious level. Nice reaction.

Duke of Cumberland was William Augustus brother of King George II known as Butcher Cumberland for his treatment of Highlanders after the battle. The flower Sweet William is known as Stinking Billy in Scotland. The town of Fort William also named after him is known as The Garrison (An Gearasdan) in Scots Gaelic.

it is an old Celtic belief that when a man dies in a foreign land his soul returns to his homeland by way of the low road. In 1845 two Scottish soldiers were made captive one of whom was to be set free the other executed. So it is the condemned man who must return to Scotland by way of the low road in death and so reach Loch Lomond before his friend who must travel the Earthly high road.

This song is a bit of an anthem for us Scottish people. The song is taken from a poem written by a guy who I think knows death is near. However, what. Makes the song great is its multi-layered. Read the lyrics and you decide what they mean. It’ll make sense. Scotland is home.

The meaning of the words: It's told from the perspective of a Jacobite soldier condemned to death for taking part in Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion against the British crown. He's talking to his comrade in their cell on the night before he's to be put to death. His friend is not sentenced to death and will be released from prison. "You take the high road, and I'll take the low". Taking the low road is a way of saying that you're dead and your spirit is returning to where it should be. "Taking the high road" means the condemned soldier's friend will be set free and, alive, and above ground. "And I'll be in Scotland before you" means that the soldier's soul will immediately return to Scotland when he dies. "Where me and my true love will never meet again by the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond" even though he believes his soul will return to Scotland, he'll never be able to spend another day with the woman he loves in the place they shared.

Hi Island girl, massive fan here. Runrig is more than this song. The band formed in 1973 to 2018. They retired in 2018. The band singer was Donnie Munro who joined in 1974 and left in 1997 to pursue a career in politics. In 1998, they found canadian singer Bruce Guthro to fill the void from 1998 to 2018. If he (Bruce) wasn;t found Runrig would had release In Search Of Angels , their 10th album, and do a farewell tour. Each singer brings something different to the table, and oten there's comparisons which the band (the true fans) doesn;t like which is about the music. In the video, the lead singer is Donnie Munro, on backing vocals, bass is Rory Macdonald, drums Iain Bayne, guitar, Malcolm Jones, percussion, Calum Macdoand; keyboard, Peter Whisart. The band sing in english and Gaelic (prononced Garlic), and sind about the landscape, the music, people. My first gig was in 2007 in Drumnadrochit, and it rained all day. The band would still play if the weather wasn;t nice. With reactions, I would start with the Donnie era from 1978 to 1997. React to Skye, from mod for rockers. Hope this helps
