When I see extinction rebellion members stop using mobile phones , electronic and gas goods of any kind, mass produced food, anything made in a factory including clothing, fuel or electrical transport, anything where plastic is used either to contain food/drink etc along with any goods made of plastic, then and only then will I believe they are genuine. To demand anything of anyone you must first LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Are they willing to do so immediately.

I’m unashamedly a vegan because of the animals. The positive side is that nature cannot take the burden of the daily murder of millions of animals. Mankind must be weaned from the feeling of right to eat animals. This will take care of the humanization of people which will be required to take care of their part to contribute to saving our lives on this planet. However I believe to speed up this feature we need to urgently stop referring to animals as meat! There is a total disconnect by young children as to what is meat and animals! The way to go is drop ‘meat eaters’ and refer to them as ‘animal eaters’. Adults are influenced by children not the other way round as adults would like to believe. I have no doubt that this will have a strong impact on the psychology of reality. Also vegan meat, , vegan chicken, vegan fish is not only an absurdity but unnecessary. Vegan cuisine is so diverse, colourful, healthy, ethical that no words from animals should feature. I feel very strong about this and hope that animals will finally get their place in the Sun and we will be reborn as humanists. Thank you.

Tree planting, tree planting, tree planting. FFS. A discussion on tree planting, with expert input, should be dominating the debate on short term remedial actions. Almost everyone can get out and help plant trees and almost everyone can help look after a tree. Or take care of a small piece of forest or scrubland or wetland. It's just a matter of organisation and commitment. It's something Extinction Rebellion could organise itself with government assistance and expertise.

Alberto Scatto actually we need to do more than go vegan and may not even have to go vegan, the way we produce crops also causes pollution, ie the fertilizers. We need to plan the food economy using technology and experts, to help us get the lowest amount of pollution possible. I think areas of interest around this could be aqua culture (fish farming) urban farming, hydroponics etc, a lot I lack knowledge in because I am not a scientist, however I do understand economics very well and can see that market forces won’t be able to achieve a sustainable food economy even if we all changed our diets (which won’t happen, we’ll have to make people change to a degree although with proper economic planning we could make that change less noticeable and bothersome) By the way an alternative for those who can’t or won’t go vegan is the Mediterranean diet. I personally have a stomach condition which requires me to try and get high caloric intake from small amounts of food and high amounts of protein because my stomach digests food too slowly and doesn’t empty right, so when I eat vegetarian or vegan i start losing weight and i can’t afford to lose weight because i am already too thin. At least that is the case for me with what I have available in the rural south, maybe in the cities there are better choices for me to make a switch, I’ll be moving to Vegas in January and I plan looking around, because I do take this seriously but I have to work within certain parameters. (I don’t drink milk or eat cheese or beef or pork already by the way) my motivation towards this is purely one of sustainable food economy and lowering/eliminating pollution, not the ethics of eating animals. (I’m a southerner and the way I culturally view animals simply doesn’t allow me to value them the same as I do people, when you see chickens get slaughtered at a young age you just can’t look at them same as someone who hasn’t seen that)

First! Great choice in Rupert Read to do all these interviews, he's on-point, gets his talking points out, and says what needs to be said without being gaslighted (gaslit?) by the talking points of the others. Great tactic to get them to agree to some kind of meeting on air! I couldn't stand being on there, listening to them drone on about 'but this might be difficult and unpleasant! Why are you such unpleasant people?' People love to blame the messenger, and what a message it is...
@Matt-bd2qq
@Matt-bd2qq 5 лет назад
A message that needs to get to the public is how binary this thing is- it's not a case of weighing up a bit of climate change against some degree inconvenience. We either hit climatic tipping points and our children all die, or we don't. There's quite a lot of uncertainty around where those tipping points are, so best be careful. The targets are set by reality, not by politics. Whether we decide to pay attention to them is where politics comes in, and we'd have to be insane.
@martymccorkle225
@martymccorkle225 5 лет назад
If Extinction Rebellion causes inconvenience, keep in mind its protests are less inconvenient than its main competitor, human extinction: Becoming extinct can make one's day noticeably more difficult. Call me old fashioned, but residence on a livable planet is very convenient, and the rapidly declining condition of our biosphere is our most important conversation ever. No matter how things play out for our only home, planet Earth, seeing the manner in which this band of rebels have gotten the ball rolling on this long overdue conversation is admirable.

It is truly scary how disconnected people are. They are concerned about being "disrupted" on their way to work or not going on holiday. How disruptive will it be when there is no food and and all wildlife dies? Where will we "holiday" when the roads are melting and the forests are burning? Mind boggling. Direct action is likely the ONLY thing that will make a difference at this point. Great job by all Extinction Rebellion activists!!!

Just looking at Nadhim Zahawi's registered interests on Wikipedia. He's Chief Strategy Officer of Gulf Keystone Ltd and has shares in Genel Energy plc. It's not really surprising that someone such as that would harbour such opinions about climate activists. It's interesting that he made ad hominem attacks on Extinction Rebellion activists, but at no point was his integrity called into account on the basis of his vested interests in oil and gas.

Anotherthez Actually there is some land where we can only grow crops that animals eat or can only have animals, to be able to use all of the space we have as efficient as possible we will need a couple animal farms on land that we can't use otherwise. However, from a moral standpoint being vegan is still a lot better and what I described doesn't really apply today since the majority of humans still eats meat and we use a lot of space that we could use for crops we can directly eat for animals instead, so it's still better to be vegan to balance everyone else a bit out.

British capitalism is profit over people, planet and peace. Start with carbon fee and dividend. As for costs, the panel should look at repurposing the military and reducing the work week so people have more time for their climate education and the ability to make changes. Many people have already died as a result of climate change. Not getting on an aeroplane or driving a car isn't going to kill anyone. Believing that we can maintain our current greedy, selfish life-styles and confront this problem without making huge sacrifices is simply naive. When children can see the reality of the situation our generation has placed them in and politicians can't it is only an upheaval in our society that will get us on a better path.....and that will be disruptive. There is no alternative.
@aww8597
@aww8597 5 лет назад
... its no longer about whether society can support/tolerate the disruptive changes that need to be done ... it's about whether Earth can tolerate human civilisation any longer if we don't bring about changes now... Earth is soooo old, in a way we are just guests on Earth. Our civilisation is not the only thing that matters on earth, and without the conditions on Earth we won't have a civilisation, why are we humans so arrogant? We need to start being respectful to our environment. Also why do politicians always seem to have veil over their eyes. It feels like today politicians are no longer leaders whom we can lay our trust upon for the greater good of our society; they are just someone who choose a job where they can talk over us. What are politicians so scared of with making actual changes that will benefit the future of humankind; isn't that their job? I'm sure even if some policies seem radical, if experts/government can justify them in the long term, most people would abide. We need to pick up the sense of community and support in the society, and face this crisis together... There comes a point when it really cant just be about money all the time!!!!!!!

Brexit and this movement have exposed the political class for their lazy, apathetical attitude and it's time to change the game and bring them back to being accountable to the people they apparently serve.

Disrupt people's lives... What type of life? To sustain a system that is unfair and is leading to collective death, not only human but of the entire planet? It's like an ambulance trying to save a person's life through the traffic, making a lot of noise to alert people to free the way, and some lazy and dishearted drivers claiming that it's not fair, it's troubling them. But that is the aim! To wake people to the fact that the very act of keeping to do the things the way we are it's not working for everyone - look at the massive inequality, wars and genocides (Palestine and Yemen), suicide rates, the commercial drugs epidemics, the massive number of unemployed people in an economy growingly antipeople: that's what you call life? That's civilization? That's the way life has always been as if it was a Nature's law? That's the great and unchangeable, almost sacred, legacy of capitalism? And these people on the table are not even the ones who profit the most from this broken and criminal system called capitalism... Imagine the war it will be necessary to convince the robber barons of the financial system and the big Tech companies... This program just confirmed that Extinction Rebellion is completely right, civil disobedience is not only a right but nowadays, a moral and the most humane and fair duty towards our species and Nature's rights - it would be nice for these people claiming "their rights" about being parasite where did those "rights" come from and what they think are the Nature, or Environmental, rights? Bunch of disgusting spoiled people! What do they like more: flying and eating meat or staying alive? Because it's almost that the choice and the more we wait to change the more necessary and most radical the changes will be - if the scientists were not been silenced for decades about our deathstyle of living, we would not be so late in that - as Greta said, we didn't do our homework as adults and want to pass the exams with honor? Think: why would so important scientists lie about this, what they gain from it? So, if they are not lying, let's try humbleness for once and let them help us to scape from the disaster. These people on the show really didn't get the idea: we cannot stay living as if everything was going well, simply because it's not. We don't deserve but we still have time, so let's use it smartly - if people we're not so lazy to change, as the panel showed, the activists work of disrupting would not be so necessary... Stay strong and disrupting, even more, People from the UK, activists for Life and Justice. The world needs you. Thank you. Times are changing, thanks Lord for that! "I don't think it's the RIGHT thing to do." It doesn't matter how it's done as long as it's effective and we get the desired response from governments and MPs. Look at the BIG PICTURE for goodness sake! Think about what it means that people have resorted to doing this: No one feels safe anymore. Did you know it's a human right to feel safe within their environment?

INNOVATION is CRITICAL.. We have technology to go to the Moon, We have technology that can help, like Solar panels on Aircrafts and cars, housing, boats etc.. Adjusting HOW we conduct ourselves. INNOVATION will bring quality employment with INTEGRITY. The time is NOW to act for the Highest good of ALL life. The younger generation has a RIGHT to a FUTURE !!! PERSONALLY, I have been very concerned for Decades! ACT NOW. "Inconvenienced " ... the Collapsing Biosphere is Opon us . It would be "Inconvenient " of FOOD SHORTAGES, It would be "Inconvenient " for housing Destroyed by Flooding, Fires , Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Earthquakes Natural and from FRACKING! WAKE UP PLEASE!!! As much as i sympathise with XR, their proposed solutions have not been thought through. The suggestion that planes and motorised vehicles should be banned in favour of bicycles is naive. Transport of goods and food and people would become impossible - resulting in IMMEDIATE breakdown of industry - mass unemployment and mass starvation. It seems incredible to me that XR have not thought this through at all. As for the idea of a people's assembly - the idea described by XR is that a jury of randomly chosen representative members of society will make decisions. However, I can see a fatal flaw in this approach. Let us take XR's idea of banning all vehicles. Such a ban would affect every family in the UK - parents could not take their children to school, could not go on holiday more than a few miles from their homes, and could not shop at any distance either. Considering the immense impact of such decisions on every person in the UK, I believe that placing those decisions in the hands of a small random jury (peoples assembly) is wrong. Such decisions should only be made by ALL the people, because such decisions affect ALL the people. So such decisions should be made by referendum - they should never be allocated to a tiny random jury. Consequently I believe that there should be an open and public debate to discuss the solutions proposed by XR - a public and critical analysis. Laying bare the practicality of their solutions should be the main focus right now, rather than trivial details such as how many bridges they can block, or how emotional it all is. It is oddly comical that pilots now have to check the roof of their planes for blind people before they can take-off, or that police have to defend Parliament from a line of red-robbed witches. And I never thought in my lifetime to see a road blockade consisting of nursing mothers. It is all very Monty Python.

Sam Coates said: "So the whole question about this debate is amount of disruption people can tolerate in their daily life." I actually agree with it. Because this disruption is miniscule compared to disruption that is going to happen if we do not act as suggested. Compare people blocking traffic with people who cannot buy food, because there isn't any, 10 % of people are homeless migrants, totality and fascism rules, and millions of people dying every day. That's THE disruption. The current one is nothing. I am not sorry you had to use a bike to get to work. At all. I use bike to get to work every day. Winter summer sunny rainy thunderstormy.

The question MUST become. Do we HAVE the resources on this planet to solve this problem. NOT do we have the money? That's the old question during a monetary system. No silly opinions of senators , nay sayers or politicians. IGNORE them. If they don't want to listen then they aren't serious enough about truly solving the problem, period. The current system is passed it's sell by date. It IS inadequate to solve the problem quickly and effectively enough because you need to keep finding funds to do things. We need new economics. Eventually going beyond debt-based monetary economics entirely so the people have access at no cost to the resources to build the new renewable energy generation systems. NO more inflation or GDP measuring because there won't be anymore inflation or GDP. Why? Because then there will be no money in it. If people have access to their basic needs (covered atleast at first during the transition away from our reliance on money and trade to get things done) we can then formulate a program to train people to build the new technologies needed voluntarily once we've reached that point. Please watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ErMOiiNyvBU.html and visit openaccesseconomy.org please study it. Please advocate it. Please promote it. Please contribute to it. It doesn't have all the answers but it's a start towards the creation of a new economic model for us to build from. Thank you.

A few points: 1) this very debate would never have happened if XR hadn't put on such a blatant and effective demonstration 2) "disrupting the public" is the new buzzword, but did anybody NOT get to work that week? 3) I'd be prepared to trade in my fossil fuel car for an environmentally viable option if it was offered 4) and finally, we all need to make sacrifices. Paying 5p for a plastic bag isn't enough.

Hey XR, here's an novel idea for you; Target the actual industries that need to change, not the general public. Have any of you even tried to speak with industry leaders such as in the cement production industry? How about working collaboratively with them asking them how can you help them to make a transition to 0% CO2 production by 2025? You could raise funds for green energy projects, not so you can dress up and appear virtuous out in the streets, which you clearly enjoy - essentially rubbing your own egos. Aren't the majority of you supposed to be university educated, and your go-to response is fuck with the general public's livelyhoods? Is this what the vivisection activists did? What about if every single political issue people had, they just started blocking roads, fucking with the general public's lives? Try reaching out to big investors and convince them of the positive returns for investing in actual solutions and changing industries, which people are already working on, you just don't hear about them. There is so much more positive activism you could do. Also, you really think simply stopping industries to reach the 2025 0% CO2 target emissions is a viable, achievable realistic goal? Think of how many jobs would be lost and the crash on the economy. You think you can just simply shut down industries and it be POSITIVE on the economy? You lot are fucking mental and are certainly not part of the real solution. Here's some people who are actually innovating and creating real solutions that you don't hear about, and who don't feel the need to rant and rave in the media, fucking with peoples lives; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XHX9pmQ6m_s.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-63S0t4k_Glw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hDvKJIm2WU8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DeKUlEOJ0p0.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yWPzERdNh50.html And that's a tiny number of the green projects happening right now and have been going on for years. Help them raise funding and do something that achieves good, not just feels good.

So much stepping around the edge of the issues. Yes, people need cars to get to work - the solution is not to tax people, it is to change the way we work, allow more working from home, allocate housing within walking distance to places of work, move places of work to housing, ORGANISE. Society needs to be redesigned. Public transport, PUBLIC transport, should not be x times more expensive than driving a car alone - it should be the opposite. What is wrong with this country when it's WAY cheaper to drive somewhere than take a train or coach??? Yes we need to stop flying, immediately. Affect the economy? Are you forgetting the alternative? Do we need to keep remind you the reasons we need to do these things. You either stop flying or accept climate change. Why do they waste several minutes of air time talking about the absolutely insignificant disruption instead of what threatens to affect billions of people in the future? The public when talking about what they will "tolerate", and every time they resist or delay, need to remember the consequences on the future inhabitants of this planet, their own children included. "Lose public support" ... they never would have got the public support without it ? Maybe if you useless politicians had done something over the last decades they wouldn't have had to disrupt?

What's "deliverable and supportable" depends on how serious and urgent you think climate change is. During WWII people made "deliverable" seemingly impossible things, and "supported" a large degree of disruption for a greater good.
