Rupert Spira is a contemporary spiritual teacher, writer, and artist known for his teachings on non-duality and the nature of consciousness. He is widely recognized for his clear and accessible approach to Advaita Vedanta, which is a traditional Indian philosophy emphasizing the unity of the self (Atman) with the ultimate reality (Brahman).
Spira's teachings focus on exploring the nature of consciousness and its relationship to experience, perception, and the sense of self. He often uses direct inquiry, guided meditation, and contemplative practices to help individuals recognize their essential nature as pure awareness.
In addition to teaching, Rupert Spira has authored several books, including "The Transparency of Things," "Presence: The Art of Peace and Happiness," and "The Nature of Consciousness." He also conducts retreats, workshops, and online courses worldwide, offering guidance and support to those interested in exploring the nature of reality and the path to inner peace and freedom.
Summary:
Be aware of subtle feelings of expectation that take us away from the present moment. Enlightenment is not a future state of mind, but a revelation of the ever-present nature of the Mind. Holding up understanding to our expectations allows them to naturally come to rest. Resistance to the present moment is the activity of the separate self. Let go of longing, searching, and desiring, and simply be aware.
Highlights:
🧭 Expectation takes us away from the present moment and into an imaginary future.
🌟 Enlightenment is not a state of mind that can be acquired or achieved.
🪞 Hold up understanding to expectations and let them come to rest.
🚧 Resistance to the present moment is the activity of the separate self.
🌌 Let go of longing, searching, and desiring, and simply be aware.
Key Insights:
💡 Enlightenment is not a future state of mind: The script emphasizes that Enlightenment is not something that is not present at one time and becomes present at another time. It is a revelation of the ever-present nature of the Mind. This insight challenges the common belief that Enlightenment is a goal to be achieved in the future.
💡 Expectation denies the reality that is already present: By expecting Enlightenment as a state of mind that will come upon us in the future, we deny the reality that is already present. Expectation betrays the belief that Enlightenment is a state of mind that can be acquired or achieved. This insight highlights the importance of recognizing and letting go of expectations.
💡 Holding up understanding to expectations allows them to naturally come to rest: Instead of trying to discipline or stop expectations, the script suggests holding up the understanding that any object or state of mind acquired in the future will eventually disappear. By meeting expectations with this understanding, expectations can naturally come to rest. This insight offers a practical approach to dealing with expectations.
💡 Resistance to the present moment is the activity of the separate self: The script points out that below the threshold of thought, there is a pre-rational impulse or emotional impulse to move away from the current experience and venture into the future or the past. This impulse is the activity of the separate self and is the mechanism of resistance. Recognizing and understanding this mechanism is crucial for coming to rest in the present moment.
💡 Letting go of longing, searching, and desiring: The script suggests that whatever can be expected, longed for, desired, or searched for can never be what we deeply desire, which is peace or fulfillment. Letting go of these impulses and simply being aware allows us to connect with our essential nature. This insight emphasizes the importance of non-attachment and the futility of seeking external objects or states of mind for lasting peace and fulfillment.

This was the exact thought which was running in my mind Why is that inspite of recognition of my true nature , the mind is still reluctant to come to rest to its source !! And I got a notification to for this meditation!!! Immense gratitude and love for posting this video , may be this the language of the divine - intuition , synchronicity 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️🙏

It's like Ramana Maharshi's comparison of the mind to a rotating fan. Even after turning off a fan, the blades continue to rotate for a while due to residual momentum. Similarly, when we begin to withdraw our attention from the mind, thoughts may continue to arise for some time. This residual activity gradually subsides as we persist in our practice. Eventually, the fan blades come to a complete stop. In the same way, with consistent practice, the mind reaches a state of stillness. 💙
