I'd agree but he didn't. Always looked up to the jazz greats and said he was just rock and roll. A legend of a person and musician, not just a drummer by any account though. So much a part of this aspiring drummers world, a tear. RIP indeed.
@Pscilo cybin If you haven't seen Cream reunion concert it's worth finding. Baker looked too crusty and old for reflexes, but he hit everything right on the money as did bassist Bruce (very underated) and of course Clapton. Bakers skills in play and tuning alludes. I'll call it, He's a legend.
A young, ignorant stoner, I didn't realize I was listening to such prophecy all those years ago. Just an aspiring drummer loving what the machine, Neil was doing. Live and learn at best, Live at least. All of 2112 is just Wow! Hang in ya all.
I just liked the music when I was a kid. I knew the lyrics sounded like they were singing about something deep but I never could understand the lyrics. And I didn't have access to the lyrics like I do now on the web.
He literally told us this would happen. Subdivisions, New World Man, Analog Kid, and 2112 and, especially Moving Pictures, Witch Hunt in particular. I've never grieved the loss of a stranger so hard as this man. 💔 I'm going through it right now, epic, cosmic, prophetic events rendering me and going back to their mish music from my youth which mirrored the times in which I find myself today, have been a lifeline of a sanity, hope, direction, solace in dark times. RIP, Sir Neil Peart, thank you for your art!
I can’t pinpoint what it is but for some reason, I just can’t believe that the mental capacity of the youth from about 1995 onward can NOT delve deep enough to congure up the processes to appreciate what lies within the confines of a Rush album. I just don’t see it in them. I never hear anything from the gen x or Y or melinials that shows me they have the inner peace and soul it takes to grab ahold of what Rush was. I’m sure there are some and I just haven’t met them. I’m 60 and what I experienced from those that are older than I by about 7 or so years dont seem to get Rush either. But they do understand a lot about the 60s and the essence of the time in which Rush was born from. And there is great conscience there with them for sure. Overall no matter what generation listens to such an iconic band, as Rush, and I’m sure Rush wasn’t for everyone, I do hope that some kind of music that speaks the life positive experience that Rush exposed, will infiltrate the psyche of our youth with positive inspiration. We would all benefit.
I true rocker story: I was about 9 years old and got into my dad’s 8-track collection. Found a cassette with a cool star and a number on it. I popped it in and listened to the intro and then Temple of Syrinx-my brain clicked and I felt an actual physical and mental change. From that point on, it’s been rock and metal only. Thanks Rush for setting my love for rock music right! 45 years later, I still hear this song, turn it up to 100, and sing it as loud as my voice can, regardless of the people watching me from their cars!
I know it’s an old comment but lots of my friends are gone, but the memories of listening to rock and metal will them still get me pumped when I remember some of the times we had listening to great music haha, miss Karl’s pure unadulterated madness!
Me to in the head phone days I'm 62 and vinyl records way better sound than 8 track tinty sounding cassettes and cd they suck keep your 8 tracks out of the heat hated those tapes would get wound up in the player remember? Keep on rocking my friends
Drumms are usualy a support instrument. Guitar, sax or violin for example can be played solo and make a reasonable song out of it. Bass and drumms are not supposed to be solo instruments. They can be, but it takes great skill and creativity which most drummers lack even at master level. This fact makes Neil's drumming even more remarkable than it seems at first.

In an inverted form though. All the gifts of life -- great works of art and music -- are freely available, yet people ignore it. They gladly consume the commercialized bland crap that is shoveled out at them instead.
Rush always sounds like they're from the future. No matter how old the song is & no matter how far into the future I listen to them, they always sound like they're coming from a distant future. I thought this in the 80s, in the 90s & I still think this in 2023. More precisely, their sound specifically sounds like they're playing inside the vast halls of a space ship in the future in another galaxy far far away. I've felt this way since my ears 1st tuned in. I've been listening to this time travelling band since my birth in 1978. My father raised me on Rush. 🤟🏼
I never got to witness the spectacle of the drums being tamed by Neil on this Epic explosion of lyrics, mesmerizing and hypnotic rhythms. I think 2112 is the Best album, and Temple is their best tune.

For me, it's a tossup between 2112 and Fly By Night... Then again, those two are the only ones I know, sad to admit; despite being from the heart of the Awesome Generation (Gen X), and closing in on my 54th trip around the Sun.
was great to see this featured in the book Ready Player One. Saddened the temples quest wasnt featured in the movie. Still a great movie. Been a fan of Rush since way back in the day.

Syrinx is the ancient Greek word for pan-pipe. The myth behind this is that Pan, the king of satyrs and god of nature, was trying to rape a girl named Syrinx, but she prayed for deliverance and was turned into a bunch of reeds. Pan decided she would be his forever, so he cut down the reeds and made an instrument out of them, the pan-pipe. Wonder if there's some connection here, or if they were just going for a science-fiction sounding name.
Niel Peart was a visionary. This song is EXTREMELY relevant to what is happening in America today. I'm just waiting to hear about the NSA calling itself the "New Syrinx of America'
