Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.

The Capitol Theater provided "Twin screen video projections" for all live acts in the mid 70's ... I don't think that they were supposed to keep the tapes, but I'm sure glad that somebody did . This was my first concert, and I went to see Rush specifically .

Alex got a little overlooked in the crowd of Van Halen clones that started to spring up in the 80's. However his playing has aged much better than any of those guys, and has far more character and creativity. His chord choices and riffs are often perfect - no idea how he writes some of that stuff.

Seamus Slattery Most bands who play live do a 30 - 45 minute setlist. Rush do a 2 hours 30 minute setlist. 1 average song length: 3-4 minutes. 30 minutes x 5 = 2.5 hours 3 minute song x 5 = 15 minutes. So... hmm... maybe that isn't a lot of time in Rush's standards. ;)

Yes! Exactly! (I guess I'm not the only one!): The Presentation section which starts at 6:40. It perfectly expresses in a "tension and release" contrast, the dichotomy between the practical and the passionate. The sleep is still in my eyes, the dream is still in my head, I heave a sigh and sadly smile and lie a while in bed, I wish that it might come to pass, not fade like all my dreams.......Just think of what my life might be, in a world like I have seen..... Brings back great memories. Even though the world isn't as awesome as it was in the 70's and 80's, I wouldn't have wanted to be young at any other time in history because of music like this. I am one of the lucky ones who was there to see the greatest musicians in history playing the best music ever written. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I’ve seen many live Rush concerts dating back to 1978, and live performances on RU-vid. This, in my opinion, is Rush at its absolute peak talent level. Geddy’s vocal range, bass tone, Neil’s power, timing, and speed, and Alex killing the solos - just absolute brilliance. Young, raw talent. It does not get better, just maybe a little more polished as they matured. Rush at its finest.

that guitar solo from the Presentation Part is one of the most underated guitar solos. Full of emotions and technics. Definitely the most difficult "heavy metal" guitar solo at that time. even overcomes some of the famous guitar licks from 80s. Ahead of a curve. True genious Alex.

My musical world began with these songs back in the late 70's on All the Worlds a Stage double LP. So saddened to hear of Neil's passing wishing I knew him and he of me, then I remembered, Neil wrote all Rush's lyrics and realized he knew all of us and we knew a bit of him. He can certainly rest peacefully a complete man.
