Sometimes I feel that TABS overcomplicate the process - Because it's usually someone's interpretation of what is being played. Alex Lifeson wrote the piece but I don't think he TABBED..

Sounds wonderful. How a hard rock band can open an album with a classical guitar Etude, that is equally catchy and harmonically rich... is beyond me. Welcome to Rush
@yes_head
@yes_head Год назад
Kind of like what Yes did with "Roundabout" 5 years earlier? 😉 Granted, this is a longer piece of music, but Alex was riding on some long coattails by the time he recorded this. Still, I'm glad he tackled it. As a band they were all progressing for sure.
@katskillz
@katskillz Год назад
@@yes_head good call with Roundabout. I know this sounds like splitting hairs, but the Roundabout classical guitar is more like a motif / melodic idea, whereas the Farewall intro is concise but an entire standalone song in itself (basically Etude). Either way, it should be no mystery Alex was heavily inspired by what Howe already did.
@yes_head
@yes_head Год назад
@@katskillz Agreed. A closer comparison for Steve Howe would be the “Leaves of Green” section in “The Ancient” (Pt 3 of Tales from Topographic Oceans.)

You have to check out Alex’s classical composition off of ..Exit stage …left “ Broons Bane” ….many RU-vidrs have performed themselves …it’s a wonderful piece …about two minutes long it was used as intro to the Trees

when there is so much wrong in the world this video shows what is right in the world. Watching someone learn a piece of music on a classical guitar. I am learning to play the Classical guitar and have completely moved away from tab, but learning music is hard but worth while. Brilliant wonderful video.

A Farewell to Kings, Broon's Bane, The Trees--these got me started playing classical. Then came Kansas' Dust in the Wind, Led Zeppelin's Rain Song, Stairway & Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Crosby Stills Nash & Young's Helplessly Hoping, Heart's intro to Crazy on You, Black Sabbath's outro to Heaven and Hell, Metallica's Fade to Black, Steve Hackett's Horizons, Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, Randy Rhoades' Dee.... There are a LOT of awesome classical pieces--or good acoustic pieces that sound great on a classical guitar--in rock, prog, and metal. And of all the songs I learned to play when I was a kid, those acoustic pieces are the only ones I still remember and can (sort of) still play. I know I'm not the only guitarist who was drawn to my instrument by these non-traditional pieces.

I imagine it must be very difficult to have trained and learned how to play sheet music, but then have to do it through tabs. I'd love to see your reaction to Alex's "Hope" from the Snakes and Arrows album. It's a short solo piece on his 12-string, and it's very beautiful.

I personally learnt this by ear. No tabs needed back in the day, mainly because there were'nt any :) All the Rush songs I've learnt have all been done playing the tracks hundreds of times over. Nice job though.

Nicely done. Next up: "Mood for a Day" by Steve Howe, then "Horizons" by Steve Hackett. 😁 Also, if you like Alex Lifeson's take on Spanish guitar there's a chunk of it in the song "The Trees".

There's a mistake in the tab. In the 5/4 bar halfway through, the second D before the prolonged A is actually a Dmaj7, not a D. Good to see an actual practice session before our eyes. I could play this once upon a time but having barely touched a guitar in 25 years I'd hesitate to attempt it again, especially on camera. Alex always played his acoustic parts so clean.

I wish I could’ve learned to read. I tried so hard but just couldn’t get it. I always wondered if I played a keyed or stringed instrument if it would’ve been easier, because obviously drums aren’t typically tuned to specific notes.

If I recall correctly, the guys from Rush all played by ear. Maybe it explains the lack of an available score? Somebody other than them would have had to figure it out from scratch.

I take them at their word that they didn’t really “know what they were doing” in terms of theory and classical training, which makes their chord vocabulary astound me even more! Is it any wonder a common urban legend is that they all have PHDs in music?
