The song isn't shitting on religion. There is nothing wrong with religion. There is something wrong with following something blindly though. Don't believe in something because someone told you to or you feel like you have to. If you want to follow something it's because YOU want to follow it. That's what freewill is all about. You choose your own path. Be yourself. And yes, the song is hippyish but the song is also nearly 40 years old. Give them a break.

It seems to me that it would only attack religions that say we are completely predetermined, such as Calvinism for example. I don't believe freewill is necessarily opposite to having an omnipotent God, however, since an omnipotent God should be able to grant us freewill (ok, this all gets pretty handwavy... heh).
@J-Nigma

Yup. Also, react to Rush - YYZ Live (Rio) You guys really need to see why Rush are treated like musical gods and Sori will love the crowd in it. It's incredible what they can pull off with just 3 members in the band but it helps that all 3 of them are some of the best in their fields. that's how good they are. The band isn't metal but they are super influential to Rock and Metal was born out of Rock. Also, here in Canada Rush is worshiped.

Any belief system that has prophecy is not compatible with the idea of freewill.
@DavidSmith-pg1ob
@DavidSmith-pg1ob 6 лет назад
I would say that's not entirely true. For example, let's say there is a prophecy that originates from God, and the prophecy comes true. Now, did God predict the future, or did God just utilize enough power to force the event to come true at the appropriate time. The first interferes with freewill in general, but the second only interferes with freewill pertaining to the specific prophesied events.

As a guitarist, I don't drown it out, but pick it apart. Lifeson manages to play lead and rhythm in chorus with himself. Especially in concert, the "over dubbing" people assume he does, he pulls off on a single guitar, switching back and forth and light speed. Even as phenomenal as Stevie Ray or Jimi were, none hold a candle to this guy's ability to be the entire rhythm and lead melody section at once.

Rush isn't for everyone, especially the vocals, but the music itself is tremendous. It looks like you guys are getting lost in the lyrics of the songs you are reacting to. As soon as your eyebrows raise, usually when you're offended by the lyrics, we know the song is dead to you. My point is, the song is more than just lyrics. Try listening to the song first than reading the lyrics after, it's hurting your reactions. You guys are reading, not listening, in my opinion. It's not childish . Children's music wouldn't have this complex of a melody. Welcome to a song written in a major key. And no part of this song is in 4/4, as most rock , pop, and metal is. It's mostly 13/4 and 3/4. What's brilliant, is that you didn't even notice. Just like reading any subject, you need to expose yourselves to a greater diversity of music, to better understand what you are hearing. I don't mean to be critical, but I feel you do a disservice to any band by not understanding their musicality...

Yikes. This is another Unleash the Archers like scenario for me. I can't comprehend why you guys would dislike this band, in the same way as I couldn't figure out why you disliked Unleash the Archers. But I think I may (perhaps) have figured it out. I'm thinking it may be the lyrics. You guys are extremely lyrically driven. In both cases you have bands that musically are incredibly complex, yet lyrically both songs were a bit weak (though with Rush I think its more the themes of the material that annoyed you than the actual quality of said lyrics). I do like that you are honest (though I take issues with Sori's use of descriptors when she runs across a song she really dislikes). But I can't be mad at you, for the same reason I didn't STAY (I'll admit I was pretty pissed initially, cause I love the band so much) mad about Unleash the Archers getting slammed. Reaction channels are supposed to react. You aren't here to parrot our thoughts back at us. You aren't gonna like every song I love. Though it seems like this video was also a growing experience for you all, I see in several of the comment responses you mentioned taking a better look at the instrumental aspect of a song. And I am extremely glad to hear that. Its great that you connect to music lyrically, but large portions of music are made where lyrics are almost an afterthought, where its the music that is the focus (it is called music after all). A good exercise for you all might be to review a instrumental like YYZ from Rush or a song from Scale the Summit (try Atlas Novus) to sort of train yourselves to pay attention to the music in more detail. In the absence of lyrics it may be easier for you guys to do that. Try it as an experiment some time, you might find you really enjoy it. I LOVE instrumental stuff, especially stuff like Gordian Knot, Liquid Tension Experiment and Scale the Summit where its about soundscapes, a musical journey without words. You can just (and Sori can relate to this) close your eyes and be carried away on the journey. Also usual request for Wintersun-Loneliness (Winter). Someday hopefully....

Yes, and it is the least. it is like going to date Miss America and say: "Yeah, her dress is nice". lol Actually lyrics are just a detail in music. Like a cherry in a cake. I think you guys focus TOO MUCH on lyrical content to analyze music. When the focal point should clearly be the music itself. Metal music (and correlates) is/are ~90% about music and what one(s) can express using these mechanical waves: Fucking Feelings! Sometimes words are just words... No one can fake what the music can express. But okay, Rush is not an easy pill to swallow, I admit. Geddy Lee's voice is nasal and high pitched, the time signatures are disturbing (just like Tool (which pay high tributes to Rush, just saying)) and the bass VERY present (since they just have one guitarist, since they are a power trio, the bass must cover the "holes" that the absence of an strict rhythm guitar provides), which is kinda strange, for non-trained ears. I took time to fall in love with them and then, they became my favorite band of all time. Hands down. Maybe you should watch some Rush reactions made by LostinVegas Ryan and George. Not to copy them, at all, but to just to listen to the music, since you are probably not doing the same songs they did. ;) I like the channel, that is why I am here. Watching and commenting (which is something I very rarely do on any social media). I also like the fact you guys are very honest. Ok, let's not adopt a mentality of "if its not as heavy as possible, it's not good" I've seen many people start to think like that and then they lose interest in everything except death and black metal. and Sori is doing it more than Vin. Like in one of the AIC reviews where she was disappointed that Layne didnt go into death growls/ screaming. you have to focus on the musical quality, lyrical quality and tone in relation to topic. Neil's lyrics are against the idea of someone being trapped in their life with no choice. He's saying that you have to choose to follow a god or not and choose to make your own life better, or not. The idea behind this song is very relevant today imo, people are constantly blaming someone or something else for their troubles instead of making a decision to do better on their own terms

Rush is definitely not metal. Not sure where you guys got that notion, but Rush is considered Progressive Rock, along with Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson, to name a few. They morphed their sound in the 1980s( you heard that change with Time Stand Still which is about 7 years after Freewill) and then again in the 1990s and 2000s. Their catalog is deep and varied and really amazing. Vin, I can honestly say that I love this song. I understand your points and the 2 of your breakdown of the song, I can honestly say was deeper than I have ever took it and I appreciate that. The reason I have ALWAYS LOVED this song was for the line "If you choose not to decide, you have still made a choice". That is the truth on a deeper level, because going along with what you was saying about one persons choices vs. anothers. I believe the only true freedom an individual has is the freedom of thought. And Sori you are right about the reason I love fallowing your guys videos is because the discussion breakdown of the songs I listen to, does help my mental well being and I THANK YOU GUYS FOR THAT!

Basically what Neil is saying is, you don't have to believe in God or religion to be a good person. And in fact there are some who fall victim to bad people who veil them selves in religion and God. He's saying don't do what people tell you to do, do whats right for your self. There are much better songs by them both musically and lyrically for a reaction. "The Trees" is an interesting take on politics and musically above the norm. Earlier Rush fans hold "2112" as the flagship of their creativity and emotional content. "Hemispheres" being a close 2nd. The musicianship in those two albums has inspired many to take up the bass, guitar and drums. I'm a firm believer of don't jude a book by it's cover, but at the same time, Rush has been known to be a bit of an acquired taste, and is known to not be in much favor of the female persuasion do to there abundance of technical prowess in the first 7-8 releases. Thats the one thing about Rush, you either love them and get what they do or you don't.

This may be the most confusing reaction I've heard you guys do. I get that some people don't like RUSH. They aren't everyone's cup of tea, but it's just mind-boggling that you think the lyrics of THIS song are terrible when day in and day out you give the benefit of the doubt to bands, many of which are the lyrical equivalent of 12 year old internet trolls, each trying to be "satanier than thou." All this song is talking about is the difference between free will and fatalism, between taking responsibility for your actions and blaming everyone but yourself. And if RUSH's "Free Will" reminds you of songs you heard in Sunday School, what church were you attending??? :-)

Tag@neilpeart.net Neil Peart is one of the biggest names for both drumming and lyrics in Rock History. Smart man, and very outspoken but not preachy. Surprisingly spiritual, but does not prescribe to any one religion. Their catalog of music is iconic. I personally have seen Rush 3 times myself, I am 49 now. 70s Rush blows away most of 80s Rush, its like 2 different bands. 70s Rush is way heavier and more guitar oriented, without most the keys and synths they started to go a tad overboard on in the 80s. You want classic Rush play songs from RUSH, Fly By Night, 2112, Caress of Steel, Farewell to the Kings, Hemispheres and i would add the early 80s Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. Guys, I love your channel and this reaction. To me, it displays your highly intellectual approach to lyrics. Rush lyrics sucked you in on this one and you totally blew off the music and musicianship of this band! But I absolutely love Vin's intelligent criticism. Sori, Rush isn't an easy band to understand. Their music takes a few times....much like Megadeth to some. Freewill.....Rush has lived it and defined it. They have to be one of the hardest working bands of all time. Freewill could describe their will to make the music they wanted....when the record companies did everything, aside from dropping them, to control what they created. Rush did it their way and never set boundaries. They paved the way for progressive music. And yes, I'm one of those subscribers who looks forward to every post! Thanks again you two.

Metallica, Foo Fighters, Primus, Dream Theater, Godsmack, Nine Inch Nails, Symphony X... all those bands, plus more, have credited Rush as being one of, if not THE reason they picked up an instrument or worship the ground they walk on. Hell, I don't like the Beatles, but I give credit where it's due and respect them for saving Rock & Roll so other bands can follow in their footsteps. I'd say, go watch a live rendition of this song so you realize how much talent only 3 people bring to the table by reproducing the exact same sound in concert... but in order to do that, you'd need to appreciate the music talent they have in the first place. Seems like you tend to tune those portions of these songs out as "white noise" and only focus on one or two things you don't like. Instead of recommending a song for you guys, my only recommendation is to just not listen to them. It's painful to watch people miss the point of a band or a song as horribly as you two do!

You have to remember Vin and Sori come from new age metal so theres ears are trained to a more modern sounding sound. Rush members are some of the best in the world and you have to have aural (ear) training to understand Rush and lots of classic rock bands. There more into the meaning of lyrics than how musical the group sounds. Lots of times Vin and Sori have missed the point or dismissed great musicians because they don’t understand the music. Like when they reacted to Stargazer and stopped short of mentioning anything of the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore one of the best guitarist to come out of the 70s.

Freewill is more representative of the band than Time Stand Still, I wish you guys didn’t focus on the lyrics exclusively. I guarantee that 100% of the people listening to Rush are enjoying the instrumentation. You were trying to find that link between Rush and metal, it’s right here in the proggy riffs. Rush’s lyrics are often nerdy, preachy things, but lyrics are only the very tip of the iceberg when it comes to music.

Freedom and free will doesn't necessarily has the premise to not restrict yourself at all. Don't do onto others what others shouldn't do onto you, if you want others to respect your free will you have to respect theirs. there has to be a line consense to embrace freedom as a society, not just as a lonesome warrior for own rights. But fact/reality-checking such consense should be allowed. question authorities. question to agree, or to progress. that's a meaning of freedom and free will, too. and imho that's the bottom line of this song.

This is another song of theirs that's from part of their evolution... Their first 4 albums were where they grew up. The first, "Rush," they had their own sound, based on Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Cream. Their second, "Fly By Night," was the first with Neil Peart, and it expanded their style into somewhat more progressive, along with the hard rock. The third, "Caress of Steel" was darker, harder, and more prog. They begin weaving together multipart songs. It was nearly the end of the band. The 4th, "2112," was their breakthrough. It's where they first "grew up," and the first side, the multi-part, "2112," is loosely based on Ayn Rand's "Anthem," a dystopian society, where our hero finds a guitar and introduces music to a people with no individuality or freedom. Next was "A Farewell to Kings," which was still hard, as was the next, "Hemispheres," which to this day, garage bands will brag if they can play "La Villa Strangiato" properly! Give some of the earlier albums a chance. Also, check out "Tom Sawyer" or "Red Barchetta" from Moving Pictures. They must have been doing something right, selling out stadiums all over the world for more than 34 years with nearly NO radio air play, and press that tried to bury the band.

I've been watching you guys for a while, trying to see your point of view. I'm sorry but this time you two are just wrong. First, Rush was never glam or metal (as you said in your last Rush video). They've always pushed the limits of musicianship and thoughtful lyrics, never bending to what was trendy or "cool", at least in the early records. Second, humans, of all religions, are social creatures. If we want to have a civil society, your freedom to swing your fist ends three feet from my face. In a world of grey areas, there are some things that ARE black and white. Some things are just right and some things are just wrong, no matter your background. Freewill is the ability to think for ourselves and decide what is right for us as individuals. Not to enact "The Purge". Lastly, for you to say that Christianity is the only "right" religion is just a product of your upbringing, your Sunday school education. If you were born in Istanbul or Tibet you would have a completely different world view. Does that mean that everybody else is automatically wrong? Only what you believe is correct? I don't think so... The definition of faith is to believe something without any evidence. To say you have the only answer to unknowable questions is arrogant. I'm pretty sure you've never been to the afterlife. I'm no biblical scholar but isn't free will the "punishment" God gives Adam and Eve for taking fruit from the Tree of Knowledge? I respect your faith and your right to believe anything you want but don't say everyone else is wrong because a pastor or priest told you so. That pastor or priest is just another imperfect, fallible human. My humble opinion... I would love to have a proper debate with you!

Rush is progressive rock. Considered the thinking mans band with very intellectual lyrics. Maybe it went over your heads. The "child's song" was kinda insulting though. It wasn't a rejection of anything. It's was affirmation of doing what you really believe in, not what people tell you that you have to believe. Use free will and your own mind to determine your own course.👎
