This is grown up Rush. Neil Peart is one of the most erudite and intelligent writers in the history of rock music who, even thirty years ago was questioning just how much significance being in a band should have in his life. Trying to balance his responsiblilty to his art and his colleagues against his own desire for privacy and the pursuit of other interests. When you consider the tragedies which beset him a few short years after this was written the words become much more poignant. At the same time there can be very few musicians who have dedicated so much time and effort to perfecting their chosen craft.

@Sideways Rain Adore 80s Rush. Rush, both Lee and Lifeson, showed an ability to change with the musical times and still stay true to their core musical and lyrical identity. From Lifeson's reggae-infused guitar parts (with distortion and chorus effect) in Digital Man to moving to strats with single-coils in order to take up a different part of the frequency spectrum as Lee incorporated more synthesizers, these guys are adept at adaptation :-) more so than other bands.

I've heard that song so many times, and I always thought it was a nice one because of the content and feel. I hadn't listened to it in ages though. But tonight, when I came across this reaction video and listened to it again, I got tears in my eyes. I'm 59. I buried my life partner. I've buried close friends. I've watched my nephews and nieces grow from infants to full adults. I've felt time slipping by more and more, and hearing this tonight made me contemplate it all. It's odd how people get different things from the same song. Tonight, I just got a bit of melancholy. I didn't see it as regret about the past or sacrifices made. I just saw it as getting older and finally hitting the point where you're old enough and hopefully wise enough to be able to appreciate the moment that you're in now.

I'm a little disappointed in all these Rush experts, who are suggesting the same songs everyone else has done and are overlooking a great opportunity. You can't tell me it wouldn't be amazing to see two Christians react to "Armor and Sword". Or even "Roll the Bones". And some of the most powerful lyrics Neil ever wrote are in the song "The Pass". Why doesn't anyone ever suggest that one??

Wow, guys. You stumbled right into the biggest moment of transition Rush had.. Hold Your Fire is a total introspective journey and it's about the things that resonate personally with the band that they reach out with for universality. Sori, the look on your face, as you took in the lyrics-especially "children going up, old friends going older," was priceless. People have that kind of reaction to Landslide. Yeah, Rush is a much harder rock band before and after Hold Your Fire, but this moment in 1987 is like a pause in everything. Incidentally, that same year this album was released is when the tenor of the Cold War changed from standoff to reconciliation, so the world was in a state of flux at that point.

Alan Gilbert The band replaced John Rutsey right before their first tour. The record company suggested it because John was diabetic and didn't do a great job of managing it, so the record company was worried a long tour would kill him. So they held auditions in a garage in St. Catherines, Ontario 6 weeks before the tour started.

Rush in the 1970s was very zeppelinesque. They helped pioneer progressive rock which led to progressive metal as a genre. Definitely without rush there would be no dream theater or animals as leaders.
@michaelwoods9005
@michaelwoods9005 5 лет назад
They didn't really "pioneer" progressive rock. Yes, King Crimson, ELP, the Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc had been playing prog rock for several years before Rush came onto the scene.. Their 70s prog, as great as it is, was a few years behind the curve.

Rush evolved and changed every album. And not in little bits, each album is different and relevant to their era. They started out Led Zeppelin hard rock, but then went completely left field to the point where they almost lost their label. Then "2112" & "Hemespher" came out which influenced so much Metallica, Pantera, Tool, you name it. Then they made things simpler, becoming an awesome 80's band, then back to hard rock, finishing off with their 19th studio album "Clockwork Angles" which to me is a perfect end to such an amazing band. If you guys continue to explore their music, start with the first and work your way down. I think you'll enjoy the bands evolution.

It's just a different album, but it is real heavy. It's a lot more complex than it seems, lyrically and musically. Snakes and Arrows was one I couldn't get into until I watched a documentary on it, then it clicked in. Most Rush albums took me a while to get into even though I've been a fan since 1977.

Rush is progressive rock, made in Canada, and damn great for 40 years now... They don't do metal, they do prog rock. Lead singer and bassist Geddy Lee is in the top 5 best bassist in the world, drummer and writer Neil Peart is pretty much the best rock drummer alive today, and guitarist Alex Lifeson has legendary licks in his repertoire. They have long been absolute stars in Canada, but just as other legendary Canadian bands like The Tragically Hip, they never really broke the US market. Rush has only been induced into the Rock and Roll hall of fame like last year, and we Canadians have been signing petitions for them for years. Please do more Rush, best band ever. Listen to Free Will, has a great take on religion and tolerance you will probably enjoy. Or also The Trees, really great writing.

HMan, you're the first person I've seen namecheck The Tragically Hip. As a Brit, I was introduced to them by a Canadian buddy and I guess I'm one of a very few who know of them over here. I actually saw them play The Academy (Student Union) at Manchester University about a decade ago. It was in the smallest of the three venues there with no seating and capacity of about 200 (and a bar in the same room). It struck me I was seeing a class act who still sell out huge venues in Canada, but in an intimate setting. Kinda like seeing the likes of U2 in your local pub! Anyway, thanks for the prompt, I'll have to go off and listen to some now. Cheers.

Metal started after Rush (Iron Maiden time, more or less). Metal came from Prog Rock, Hard Rock and a little of punk attitude. When I hear someone labeling Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and even Black Sabbath as metal, I kind of feel bad, because they are not, it is like calling a dinosaurs the same as birds. As for Rush, they don't fit very well on prog rock either, because prog rock is more like Yes, Pink Floyd (some songs) and Genesis. This labeling thing is something that I hate. After Iron Maiden, everything gravitates to metal, it is a beast and a prision.

I agree as well. Rush went through several phases throughout their career. In the beginning in the early 70s, they were a three piece hard rock band with a heavy Led Zeppelin influence. By the time that 2112 came out in 1976, they went in more of a prog direction, but were heavier than bands like Pink Floyd. It is the late 1970s albums 2112, A Farewell To Kings, and Hemispheres where you see the Rush that influenced Prog Metal, and showed the band as some of the greatest musicians in rock history. Keyboards were used in this phase, but just to expand their soundscape. After Hemispheres, the band really condensed their music to make it more radio friendly, while still retaining their high level of musicianship and songwriting. Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals are from that phase. After Signals in 1982, their music began to focus more and more on keyboards throughout, to the point where even their guitarist was starting to question his place in the music. While the music was still good through this period, it wasn't the same as their older stuff and Rush lost a part of their earlier fan base as a result. It is during this period that Time Stands Still came out. In the 1990s, the band got back to their more guitar/bass/drums roots, and continued that way until they unofficially retired in 2015. However it is their late 70s to early 80s output that is Rush at their peak. The vast majority of the suggestions come from 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures albums.

Vin and Sori- The comment you made "You don't feel like you're never going to see your daughter again." ....is quite ominous with regards to this band. The drummer, Neil Peart, lost his 19 y/o daughter in a car accident as she was driving herself to college in 1997. He then lost his wife ten months later to cancer. Amazing how he writes a song with this sentiment and then going through this hardship ten years later. His book "Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road" is an autobiographical novel, documenting his struggle to deal with these tragedies. It's a good read and dives deep into the human psyche, resolve and eventual path to healing his broken heart and soul.

Amazing how many Rush fans hate the songs that really showcase Neil's talent as a lyricist. This song and album have some of the bests lyrics in the band's library. Picking songs that showcase their musicianship is like shooting fish in a barrel, but picking songs that show how powerful Neil's lyrics are, over their individual musical talents, is another story! If you want to see how they influenced Metal, then listen to anything out of their 70's collection. To really understand this band one should listen to their works from the first albumn to the last. They are a progressive metal band with the ability to change and actually progress with each record. A lot of people will be very hard on two for picking this song, because it is not one of their best songs. I think it is a good choice, it is a good song. It shows Neil Peart lyrical writing abilities. Neil is an amazing drummer, one of the best. People forget or do not know he wrote most of the lyrics for Rush, he is a great lyricist. here is what Neil said about inspiration for the lyrics, "All through the '70s our lives were flying by; we spent so much time on the road that it became like a dark tunnel. You start to think about the people you're neglecting, friends and family. So the song is about stopping to enjoy that; with a warning against too much looking back. Instead of getting nostalgic about the past, it's more a plea for the present." There are many more great Rush songs such as "Freewill", "Closer To The Heart". "The Trees" or my favorite "Subdivisions".

There is literally a whole discography that is better than Time Stands Still which is a mediocre poppy uber-80's song. They should listen to any Caress Of Steel track to experience Rush's contribution to heavy metal.

This song reminds me of 1990. I was 19 years old and 50 seemed like forever away. Now I’m 50…. You blink your eyes and 31 years go by in a flash. This song takes on a whole new meaning now.. I wish time would stand still.

Rush is a progressive rock band. Their early days were a lot more metal-like. I would recommend Anthem. That’s a bit of a heavier and more driven song and it has some of the greatest drumming I have ever heard.

The lyrics of this song, and every Rush song, are written by the drummer Neil Peart. These lyrics are haunting as he lost his wife and daughter in a close time period around the turn of the century. He also is a naturally introverted person and doesn't seek any fame (their older song Limelight is about that) and really struggled with the loss and the public eye. Rush are an incredible band for so many reasons and one of them is their grounding. Their documentary on Netflix is well worth watching.

I Love it when Rush Is played for the first time to someone who never heard of Rush. RUSH for me is one of those bands that is best when they are played in a Setting meant for those who can Appreciate the music for the gift of 3 guys who never was popular and did it there way. Rush Music Relates to the individual and makes you think about the little details in life. I hope you play more from Rush as they are a influence on smashing pumpkins foo fighters and kiss who toured with rush in the 70s. who taught Rush what not to do in rock n roll. They started in 74 with led zeppelin being the popular act in the 70's. Working man being the first single in the US that got them on Radio in Cleveland. John Rutsey Bands First Drummer Quit the band before they went on tour because of Diabetes. Niel Came in his spot in 75 and took over wrighting lyrics. so Geddy Lee And Alex Lifeson wrote the music. 2112 was the first album where it all came together for rush and they was put on the track to success and freedom to do what they wanted musically. you will never find another band like Rush Because Rush Worked Hard through the Years in there music which is a labor of Love and the chemistry of 3 people who is more brothers then they are friends. you always hear how Bands need a new Singer or Drummer and Guitarist. But not with Rush they Stuck together with the attitude if one goes down then we will stop till we are ready to play music again. the respect they have for each other is a rare find from a band. But Rush has Always been a one of a kind of band with 3 of the most nicest guys you will ever knew. Few Tunes I recommend is 2112 Cygnus x1 Hemispheres bytor n the snowdog lakeside park necromancer bastille day spirit of radio Jacobs ladder natural science tom sawyer yyz. and few other good gems they have done. I hope you play more from Rush thanks for playing a great band who did it there way..

Red Barchetta, YYZ , 2112, Xanadu. These guys are pioneers and are constantly pushing the envelope. Despite the fact that Time Stand Still isn’t a quintessential RUSH song, you were still in the presence of genius. The band is comprised of the greatest drummer alive today, a bass player who is consistently ranked in the top three in the world, and a guitar player who is criminally underrated, and one whom I would place squarely in the top 10.

Rush cannot be defined by any style. That’s why they are an enigma in the music industry and have largely been overlooked. They are hard rock, acoustic, reggae, synth/80s, progressive rock, pop, techno, rap (yes...rap), science fiction, love ballads, 20 minute songs, 3 minute songs...anything and everything.
