Rush Hour Sudoku: The 9x9 Version!

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
A couple of weeks ago we were amazed by Chameleon's implementation of a 6x6 Rush Hour themed sudoku in which the cars could be moved around the grid carrying given digits around with them. Well rockratzero has managed to create a 9x9 version called Reserved Parking. It is difficult to imagine a more innovative ruleset!!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
yusitnikov.github.io/puzzletv...
One tip: When you finish the puzzle, make sure to enter a full size digit over each black digit in the grid to allow the software to check your solution properly!
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Rush Hour mechanics apply to car movements; given digits on cars move with the cars. Digits on pink lines and pink cars must form a set of consecutive numbers in any order. Adjacent digits on green lines and green cars must vary by at least 5. Digits adjacent on black dots and black cars must form a 2:1 ratio. Cars may not permanently park adjacent/touching a black dot. (Example: in row 6 starting positions, the black car is touching, but the pink car is not). Initially no cars may leave the caged 6x6 Region. Move the Red Car through the Cage opening and into the red outlined Parking Space to allow the other cars to move outside this initial cage. (Press the button that appears to release the cars.) Other cages in the grid are Reserved Parking spaces. Park the correspondingly coloured cars in their space. Reserved Parking have hidden given digits to be discovered while driving. Revealed digits do not move.

I highly recommend using the car hiding button on these puzzles when you aren't moving them! It fades digits out that are on cars, which helps a lot with the fake vs real digit confusion. You can then write in car digits if you're sure about where a car goes to stop them from fading out.

I suspect the reason you have to type in numbers is probably that the numbers moving with cars aren't really "there" as digits in the solving software but are rather just a visual like the cars themselves...

The reason you need to manually enter the givens is because those cells would otherwise be empty. To make the givens track with the cars, they are effectively painted on the cars and not positioned in the cells themselves. Checking the solution with missing cells will yield "Something is wrong" as if you didn't finish.
@13vatra

The odd thing is in the original 6 by 6 version the digits on the cars counted. But this one has a more complex ruleset, so maybe something in that didn't allow for the digits on cars to be counted.

@Scum42
@Scum42 Год назад
One of the things I did while solving this that was really helpful: I took your idea of coloring the cells the same color as the cars to "lock" them, but I also colored cells I knew must be part of the car with that color. This made it much easier to see at a glance where the remaining possibilities of positions for a car could be (for example, when you deduced that the pink limousine with the 3 must either be at the top or one below the top, you could have marked r2c5 and r3c5 as pink). I also colored the cells when there were only two possible positions left for a car even if they didn't overlap, for the same reason. Oh, and one other thing; for future rush hour puzzles I recommend hiding the cars when you aren't actively working on them. They only go slightly transparent, so you can still use them to make deductions, but it's then very obvious to see that they are not locked down and therefore not certain

It's impressive. Simon tends to avoid doing actual sudoku in variants but in these rush hour ones he does so much sudoku that he misses out on a lot of fun logic and deductions you can do by highlighting cells where specific cars can go (i.e. highlight in blue where the blue car could go) and then bouncing back and forth between restricting digits by possible car position and possible car position by digits.

At 59:39 roping in boxes 5 and 8 means 723 in box 5 c5, 1 in the column with the 8 In box 8, 9 and 4 together. In box 5 the 4 has to be in row 5, which means 946 roping. That puts a 6 in box 2 row 1 and 789 in the purple car, which makes the blue car go park in box 3. It’s all sudoku from there. Simons delight in solving keeps me watching. Even after I’ve solved I still watch him to enjoy it all over again.

I absolutely LOVE this sort of addition to variant Sudoku (I felt the same when the Fog puzzles started appearing). This is actually the kind of direction I was hoping this particular variant would go. My issue with the first rush hour puzzle wasn't the playing-around nature of the game. I don't mind randomly fiddling with car placements to achieve an objective. My issue was the fact that, at least initially, there were several valid placements of the cars (I know, because I discovered more than one), that then required attempting to solve the puzzle and finding it breaks a dozen or more steps down the line. This felt a little too much like trial-and-error and I found myself wishing for a more logical approach to determining the final placement of the cars. With this puzzle, the objective(s) are clear: get the red car out and park cars in their corresponding parking spots (fantastic keeping-on-theme). While there may be multiple ways or varied movement order to move the cars and get the red car out, the final placement of the cars (and their digits) are still ultimately forced and logic can be used to solve the puzzle once the cars are in the right place. Such a wonderful puzzle!!

My cries of "oh Simon" were unheard. As was 'but there's a 9 in the row' Of course our man in sudoku land always finds an esoteric way to prove the same thing we shout about later. :) (or "you forgot that hint" - but he remembered that to my relief)

Hiding the cars actually reveals why Simon was told to enter the given digits in the final solution. I enjoyed the video, nonetheless.

That was so hard for me! I struggled a lot to get the red car out. And after that I forgot for long time that ranban, kropki, and whisper rules also apply for cars^^ Took me more than 2 hours.

Oh, great! A scarcity of clues isn't maddening enough. Now the clues have wheels. I swear, puzzle setters won't be satisfied until they design the Enigma machine Sudoku puzzle.

I didn't solve the sudoku part of this puzzle, but I did solve the rush hour part and immediately started moving the cars all over the grid to see what numbers appeared if any.

I did it, but needed Simon's hint to overwrite the given digits on the car so the puzzle could admit I am right.

30:00 Simon deduces that the 3 on the purple limo has to be in one of the top two boxes, but he doesn’t corner mark that in the boxes. I think he did that another time or two. Don’t know if it would have help the solve or not. Just felt strange to have him say 3 is in one of these two cells with out marking them. Almost like he was not allowed to enter pencil marks for the given traveling digits.

The first phase was weird. It went from seemingly impossible to totally obvious in one or two moves, and I'm not sure exactly which did it. The second phase was very simple for me. After filling in the lines, and the missing digits on the parked cars, what was left was a few severely restricted cars to place, and the restriction on the horizontal limo fixed nearly all of the others. Once the ramifications were all applied, the rest was trivial. @ 31:50 - you can solve the whole renban without considering the whisper line. It's a renban that can't have a 3, so it can only be a 5. The renban is 456 or 567, so the 6 must go in R7C8, and since there's already a 4 in C9, the last cell must be 7. Since you can't put a high digit on the top of the whisper, it must be low-high-low, with an 89 in the middle @ 35:10 - "now this black dot can't be 36, or maybe it could have been if this was down there" [pointing at the 35 car]. No it couldn't, because cars can't park on a black dot. @ 35:37 "so this is 6789" - really? With 67 in the box? Look before you pencil-mark. This is the sort of dreadful sloppiness that results in awful solves like yesterday's. Even if there weren't 67 in the box, how on earth could it ever be 6, in the MIDDLE of a whisper line within a box? At least this explains how it took you 40 minutes after getting the cars out. What happened to the good Simon from before Covid? I want him back. @51:19 the 69 car claims the 9 in R2, so the green limo's 9 cannot be in R2C6, which places the 9 in box 2, fixing the green limo. This would have allowed you legitimately to put the 1 & 2 in the purple limo. This places the 7 and 3 in box 5, 7 in box 6, and therefore the 8 and 9 in box 5. This allows the rest of box 5 to be completed, which in turn allows box 4 to be completed. This removes the possibility for the 69 car to be where you have it. Therefore it must go in box 3, with the 6 in C7. The green car in R5 can only go at the extreme right, and all the cars are placed. This really wasn't that hard. There was no need to stumble through it. Several of the cars only had one or two possible places they could go. For instance, the horizontal limo could only go in one of two places, both of which stopped the other purple limo going in the top row, which fixed its position. Any lower, and the 3 would clash, or it would overlap the 9, which can never be in a sequence with a 3. Your problem was focussing on one car at a time, and picking the wrong ones. You needed to be consider all of the cars, and how they restricted each other.

I guess it would be less confusing if the moving numbers on the cars would be a different color, or maybe just outlined. (You can use the 🚗❌ button which puts the cars into the background, to see which digits are actual black ones, and which are only "on cars.) And yes, moving pencilmarks would be nice. 52:35 "We don't know whether this is the green car" ... 52:45 "It's easy to make an error, I may have already made one" ...52:55 "[...] this means this square [r4c5] is ... that's a naked single, I don't believe it, it's a one because [...] it doesn't seem to be able to be 2, 4 or 5" (pointing to the 2 on the green car). - I think that's the error right here. It turned out to be actually right, but the logic doesn't work that way, you first have to show the car is not one position up. At this point, the inverse order of 1 and two on the purple car would have worked just as well. ... And of course, Simon notices this some seconds later (but after I typed this part of the comment). The built-in checker doesn't include the black digits on the cars, so for it it looks like you have a bunch of gaps, and you have to rewrite them as "blue" digits.
