Alex is a beast. Most underrated guitarist of all time. Those sounds are mesmerizing and this was 30 years ago folks. I met Geddy as he was walking in Toronto going to the gym. I got to talk to him for only a minute but told him he was my idol and he appreciated it. Signed my hard hat and got a photo together with him. One of the best days of my life. RUSH FOREVER. BEST TRIO TO EVER PLAY MUSIC PERIOD.
So not underrated. Wish people would stop saying this. Millions of Rush fans and guitar players disagree. Rags like Rolling stone are not the gold standard. Fans are. Cream, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Police, SRV, ELP, Triumph are/were all amazing trios. Best is subjective. Rush certainly had longevity but they're not to everyone's taste as shown by their mainly male audience. I grew up on them and as a Canadian guitarist I like their music very much.
Apart from being a genious, Alex must have spent billions of hours messing around with his guitar and listening to the best albums from blues to progressive rock to classical and many more. He is always improving, and you can see that in a short time span, from 1975 when he played raw rock'n'roll (IMO) to 1979 when he wrote this insane piece. Apart from his musical genious I like this guy a lot for his personality, humble, goofy and friendly. These guys friendship is beatiful.
Dude that solo, I mean my god. Back in my day people would rave about Eddie when Halen originally opened up for Sabbath, and how every night on that tour he was playing out of his skin. Well if you look at Alex, he is literally doing the same thing. Wayyyyyyy before any of us even knew who Eddie was! So truthfully speaking Rush are the real originators! Now mind you in no way shape or form am I dropping turds on EVH, But let's be honest Rush really did start it all, and they were doing sht that bands after them still cannot replicate.
Ryan Laney some people think alex is not as good as neil or geddy therefore they think he is the inferior player in the band, which I dont think is the case..
Thank you Mr. cameraman. You caught one of the most beautiful moments in rock history. In my 39 years as a Rush fan, I have come to accept that not everyone in the world has... or will have the privilege of knowing of this band. I do know that I am one of the lucky ones who do know this trio. Talent beyond words. Thanks boys for the wild ride you gave us. Enjoy your well deserved retirement!
This is how I always want to remember one of my all-time favorite bands. At their peak, they were exactly what their name was: Rush. And they were one hell of a rush.
They were a better band in the 90s live, and even 2000s early then here IMO. More experienced and just tighter but their young energy is also different here. Both incredible!
1978,79,80 tours were peak of physical performance, still made the brutal guitar work in the 68-76 pieces core of the show and did theatrical full length epics of Cygnus, la villa and hemispheres plus the new sounds of pwaves
All the while on an ES-335, with fairly high string action from the fretboard. Pretty hard to pull off, especially back then when there where not so many shredding teachers. He was a pioneer in his own right. Very creative. 3rd in the Guitar World Readers poll of 100 greatest guitarists. 98th in Rolling Stones opinion.
Troy Lundgren Actualy this is not the 345, his 345 was Black, this one isnt even the actualy ES-335 he used, after his 335 had an accident when the neck came off, he took the es 335 body and he put a new neck with those fretmarks like a 345 and he put gold hardware, and that's the story :)
Edi Ademi That's a new 345, not a reworked 335. Alex bought the guitar at the Gibson factory as a backup to the white 355. He only used it for short time, before giving it to a roadie.
I have always loved this band!!! Was very fortunate to see them in concert touring after the release of 2112!!! Still the best band I've ever seen in concert!!! ( have seen many concerts from Aerosmith to ZZ Top). This video is amazing!!! It's difficult to put into words!!! Rush fan for life!!!!
I can't think of too many guitarists who can play at that velocity with a damaged finger. Watch his pinky on the ascending fast runs in the solo, it darts out like a worm out of an underground burrow, nailing the correct note and the right position and quickly reversing direction. It's fascinatingly creepy. What a great player. Well, all of them are. This is a great document of them at the height of their powers as live players.
I may have commented before , I'm not sure, I keep coming back here, I am addicted to this solo, it is the greatest one I have ever herd , out of all of the versions they do , this is my fav , I think it's the sound of the guitar and the sound system back in 1979 . Nov / 7 / 2019. Love this. see ya next week RUSH..
The phonetic timing these three have or had, Niel, your the best, is unmatched by almost any band ever. It and their talent for music is why they make your heart feel really good. They really are one of the best bands this planet has ever seen and I thank God I was tossed into the time frame they were here.
Saw this tour in January 1979. I was only 15. Most amazing rock concert I ever had the pleasure of seeing. You know what's a shame? That nobody filmed a full Hemispheres Tour show back then. That is the one Rush tour I'd like to see again. Best setlist ever.
I've been a frisbee guy the same day of hearing their music.. that was in 1977. an album was called Archives.. first 3 albums in one.. I'm 53 now.. I'm still rocking away and throwing Frisbees!!
This song covers so many different genres of music and timings. Some of the most outlandish 9 minutes you’ll ever hear. Hemispheres has got to be my favorite
I grew up only able to listen to studio versions of Rush via LP. When I rarely got the occasion to see a live show I appreciated the tightness to the studio versions. These guys meet every expectation I had in being a tight band.
pretty amazing line up that day at pinkpop.. Rush - the Police - Dire Straits - Elvis Costello - Average White Band - Peter Tosh (with Mick Jagger backstage who at the last minute refused to perform) and Dutch- Malasian Latin Rockers Massada.. and I was there :-)
Yes, there is more of this show and I have the copy of it. But I signed a contract that says that I am not allowed to put it on the internet so…… sorry, no more video’s of this show.
workingman Then sell it to somebody. Hoarding music is the worst thing that ever happened to this industry and most of all, to fans. "Look I have this great show but I'll never share it with anybody else because it's mine" - total nonsense.
workingman That's a good thing workingman. Not that I (and millions of fellow Rushians with me) am not longing for the rest of the show, but a contract is a contract and a promise is a promise. I'm sure this whole show will surface somewhere in the future, and my oh my...blessed will be that day!
No wonder they were always so Popular in the Netherlands, this one concert was defining for the fans and Rush as a band, because they finally got the whole number going in one go playing it for an audience. The proces to get there was huge. They promised eachother to never do this to eachother again, it was too much 🙂 Pinkpop is legendary, many bands like U2 and the Simple minds for example trying to find their way to fame.. I know, I'm getting older but wow nobody plays from the soul anymore, or forms a band and do their own thing without anyone ruining it.. I'm even ashamed to take modern "artists" serious.. While they should feel ashamed because they don't even come close to 5% of their quality..
alex is the real reason i pick up a guitar and got serious bout it at that time was mid 70's my first Rush was 2112 also saw hemisphere at that point was Jimi Ace JImmy Page BUt Alex is my main influence to me one of my top 3 players lets leave it at that!!
I feel sorry for those who havent listened to the Studio version or the official live version, both of which are way better. This version is missing the first 2+minutes
@@JinnDuceau Anthem, Bastille Day, Fly By Night, I think I'm going Bald, Lessons, Spirit of the radio, Here again, Finding My Way, Take a Friend ....the list is endless when you have a music catalog that spans over 40 years
Those dislikes are from Moronic Minority of America. They listen to EDM and Plastic Pop which is what they play at Jack In The Box and other fast food joints. That music has no soul, no spirit, no funk, blues, rock, no band members who sit down and write great songs based on sometimes heavy subject matter about human nature. I don't think those bands will be remembered ten years from now as the great pioneers of their generation, like Rush. Its disposable as a baby's diaper. But youtube is helping to keep the great bands who we came to know on a personal level, like Rush. They beat huge odds for staying power with Permanent Waves and it just took off like wildfire from that point on. They never compromised and no one ever compromised them. They had total artistic control over their songs and that's one of their secrets to huge success.
Imagine being there….a pack of cigs some beers and a couple of joints. They didn’t even know what they were a part of. La villa followed by 2112 …what a set
RUSH has a general MO. They build on complexity until they give you a mini solo played all together. Just when you think Neil can't play any harder, he does. Would have loved him to be a metal drummer.
Music is gone..Everybody is a lame, middle of the road, internet "star" these days..."Hit" songs are written by 5-6+ "writers".."Producers/Music knotZees" dictate what is acceptable..There is SO MUCH throw away music..Just browse the latest Apple Music MSM (main stream music) ..Communist/socialist ideology has killed creativity, like it always does..
It really don't Watch the fingers @2:21 to@2:30 Are you fucking kidding me Its not just playing it It is writing it and arranging it and sometimes re-arranging it . . Beast Mode!!
Good point man. Think about it, each of them played multiple parts at the same time and multi-tasked! A drummer writing lyrics which yes I know isn't done on stage during a concert but he still played a ton of different styles, while keeping within the confines of the songs never stepping on the rest of the band. Geddy sang and played both keys, and Bass, Alex well Lead and Rhythm.
It absolutely breaks my heart that I may never get to see these three guys play live together again. With the sorry state of music today, the passing of bands like Rush should not only be noted, but grieved.
Fortunately, there is hope. Greta Van Fleet seems to be following Led Zeppelin’s steps. Nothing like the real thing but still great to hear. I was fortunate enough to go see one of Rush’s last shows here in Montreal and don’t regret it...
Greta is just a mere shadow of zeppelin sorry maybe they might mature into something into something unique aside of zeppelin I hope so because they have the skill set.. we will see in 5 years
Breaks my heart too but we got 40 years, Beatles lasted what 8 or 9 Zeppelin lasted 10 years so I feel blessed but yes still miss them and glad I got to see them as many times as I did.
@phu cue To pull it off is crazy, but imagine the brilliance to compose this song. All the time signature changes seamlessly transitioned between. This song is an epic masterpiece. I honestly don't see any musicians being on these guys level ever again. Music academics with perfect execution every damn time. RIP Neil! Glad I got to see them once!
@@canadianroot what's the problem man we are just adding comments and thoughts of this Great band rush I have been following this band more than 42 years so please let us the fans express our fellings we all feel our selves as a family .
before i discovered Rush my two favorite guitarists were David Gilmour and Jimmy Page. Alex is a perfect marriage of the two styles, and now my favorite guitarist.
Toss in Michael Schenker and Jeff Beck. There were a ton of great guitarists in that era. Was into Rush from 2112 on, and got to see them on the Moving Pictures tour. Alex is definitely my favorite.
WTF can you say other than that is Alex "in the zone". I was fortunate to see them in 79 at Stafford bingley hall, and just before they play strang, Geddy dedicates the piece to 2 fans killed travelling to the gig. Well there are moments in your lifetime that stick and we witnessed Alex possessed as he played us his nightmare with disbelief drippin from our faces at the pure genius of his playin. God bless you guys, for the pleasure you have given us.
I am 51 years old...have seen Rush 16 different tours...and they are simply the soundtrack to my life. No three humans will EVER make such glorious and magnificent music ever again as these three men do. Each of them is a complete master of their instrument...beyond compare. I am still simply in awe of them whenever i am able to see them live...they bring such joy to my musical soul. God bless you Alex, Neil, and Geddy.
Rich Sellers I agree but there is another 3 pc band called kings x they are as good as I have seen live.ask any real player they know who they are. if u respect billy sheean he will testifiy. good day. long live rush and kings x
Dodge Peters...i am also a huge Kings X fan...have seen them live twice...Doug is a great singer and bass player...Ty Tabor an extremely talented guitar player...and the drummer matches their skills...check out KXM...Doug of Kings X, George Lynch of Dokken and Lynch Mob...and the drummer from Korn...REALLY solid band and CD...check it out if you haven't already.
Went to see Joe Satriani and Dream Theater some years ago; opening act was King'sX, we were all thinking, make it a short set and get off the stage; but, holy shit, they were tremendous. One of the few times when we wanted the opening act to come back on stage and play some more. That doesn't happen very often, and sadly, they didn't come back on. There are very few killer 3 piece bands, but King's X is one of them
Rich Sellers agreed i saw Rush live when i was 12 years old it changed me... im only 27 now it has been my sound track as well..never again unfortunately will 3 people make this level of creation..
Came here to pay last respect to Neil The Professor Peart this was the first song i ever heard by Rush was hooked ever since can not believe he is gone
Still blows me away. The pure joy of such a great trio is timeless. The energy that it take to make you feel the music surge through soul - dare I say genius. Too late I said it. For many of us this is the sound track of our lives. A journey we all took together and we will forever be joined by this force. Our hearts mend our troubled souls and our thoughts are cleansed as we remember why we love this group called Rush! To all of us who still believe in the power of music. I raise a toast to all. To Geddy, Alex and Neil. Thank you all for including us in your journey. Forever in our lives. Cheers!
This is what can sometimes happen when u get a few people together who are extremely talented at their professions and who keep the music and friendship as the guiding light...
A lot of great guitar players agree that the way Alex builds the dynamics and intensity of this solo is amazing! John Petrucci and Kirk Hammett have said so.
Listen to that song at least 2-3 times a week. The 2 main solos beginning and middle of that version seem like an alien on stage. To imagine he's picking every note and still playing that fast is almost beyond comprehension. Without question, one of the greatest single rock guitar songs of all time.
I actually liked the live version recorded on exit stage left but I laugh when I watch 2011 time machine version. Then I sit in awe with my chin in my hands like the kid I was 30 years ago listening to my brother play this on his huge drumset watching him with wide eye and wonder from his top bunk bed. Good times. I’m a drummer because of moments like these and music like this. RIP Neil the greatest
January10th 2020 we found out the greatest and most influential drummer passed away, Mr. Neil Peart, to brain cancer. Being 57 and seeing every show when they came thru Chicago, this is my J.Lennon moment. Was only 17 when he was killed, but was never close to the Beatles as I was to Rush. This song and concert has always been my favorite of theirs and now it will be played for the next 24 hours. As the saying goes, When I heard that he was gone, a felt a shadow cross my heart. Also feel like I have been punched in the gut and can't seem to catch my breath. RIP our Drummer Boy~
I have been a fan of this iconic trio since the early 80's. I had heard this song then, but it has only been recently when I came to count it amongst my favorites. Truly masterpiece of music
+shane campbell Not true. Alex and Geddy were friends growing up. They held auditions for a drummer after Rutsy left and Neil was chosen. It didn't have to do with a record company really.
+C Fong I cant agree more. What a great coincidence. Perfect blending. The fact I can only listen to RUSH and sometimes YES, makes that plain. Music for the intelligent that can get past the fact that you have to listen 3-4 times before you get it. Then its great forever.
+C Fong Geddy's parents survived the concentratin camps.....I have thought before....if they would not have survived there would be no Geddy and therefore no RUSH
First time I saw this (and Rush) was in August 1979. 😳 😳😳 I was only 16, and I was totally blown away! 🤯 Favorite band ever since. New song then! Already had the album, of course! I’m 61 now, and I’m still cranking it up to 11 !! 😂
