This song is amazing. Through headphones you can hear every note Neil plays. Goosebumps. A true percussionist not just a drummer. The awesome thing about Rush is that they each are playing a solo piece with the vocals threading it all together. That's my interpretation anyway.

I think you can hear that Neil was influenced by Stewart Copeland. He was a big fan of The Police at that time.

All the guys in Rush were and still are fans of "The Police". The drums and bass are definitely Police influenced. Many people think that this is the time where Alex Lifeson "stopped playing guitar". The truth is that Alex was just into changing his approach to playing.

Interesting remark about time signature as this is one of Rush’s simpler tracks. There are no time signature changes as it’s all 4/4 but there is quite a dynamic shift between the verses and choruses. Cool how we all perceive music differently. Nice reaction!

#Rush - Losing It (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada) - if you want something truly beautiful - this song just blew so many of us away, lyrics & music (especially if you've never heard an electric violin in a rock song!!) Imteresting thing about the time signature changes: the brilliance of Rush is not just changing from, say 4/4 to 7/4, in a “movement” setting, it’s changing from 4/4 to 7/4 EVERY OTHER MEASURE, back and forth. They do that a lot. And it’s as smooth as melted caramel.

The first time I saw Rush... they opened for Uriah Heap and Manfred Mann. I was fourteen years old at the time, and my brother was baby sitting me, the opportunity presented itself, so off we went downtown to the University of Toronto's Convecation Hall. A small acoustically sound venue of maybe a couple of hundred. As David Gilmour of Pink Floyd once said "what's rock and roll without a bit of feedback"... Rush was ALL feedback and were booed right off the stage! I do remember the band getting" Working Man" in though.

Such a great Rush song, one of their later works, and you can hear the different sound and type of songs, compared with their first albums. But now one next request. #Camel "Slow Yourself Down" , Marion Germany. This song explains itself nearly automatically: don't want too much too fast ! And the song is kind of curious, it starts more relaxed, but then turned into a furious part until the catchy ending melody, so it's kinda vice versa, what the title let's you expect.

@@surfeit5910 Well, I talked about this first 8 years when I wrote 'later works'. What I really wanted to say is, that Rush changed their style and sound pretty totally after a few albums. Maybe the word 'later' was too 'strong', you are right. But Rush turned kind of back with the times to their earlier style and sound. That's my opinion and how I recognized it.

During the days of records a band had to fill up as much space on the recording and after they recorded all of the songs on the album they had too much space left and that's when on a whim within I think a very short time like maybe minutes or maybe an hour or two ? they sat down and did this song to fill up the left over space. Brilliant band who can do that in such a short time and still pull off a quality song.
@whistlerwind7422

This song was written because they had too much space left on the album when they were done recording. So they needed one more song, but it had to come in under four minutes (yeah, right). Mission "4 Minutes" was launched, and this is what they came up with.

@@tonyr2360 maybe underrated isn't the right term. Under-appreciated might be a better term. Bass players like Entwistle, Flea, Pastorius, are/were great bassists, but the level of difficulty is not nearly the same as Geddy's multi-faceted performances. Combining the bass with keyboard and singing all at the same time, AND keeping up with Peart's constant tempo changes, is incredibly hard! Your reactions are great! I enjoy watching you, Rich (who know most of this music) enjoying great tunes, but just as much, you are enjoying watching Kel as she goes through the discovery of what was denied her! Kel is a joy to watch - with her knowledge of music and tremendous balance of both intellectual appreciation of the music (particularly the more "proggy") and also the heart of the music - the pure aesthetic value! I can see the connection between "New World Man" and Tom Petty - NWM was more complex than most of Petty's work, but had a similar "happy" feel. Magnus is probably correct about influence from the Police, as well - I suspect that Neil and Stewart influenced each other more than a little :-) - and particularly in this song, the little "dip" into a bit of reggae / ska feel may have even been an intentional nod to that other trio. On to a suggestion ... Great jazz bassist Charlie Hayden had several daughters who also went into music - in particular his daughter Petra has done some amazing things - including a series of completely a capella arrangements of modern music. I saw that you have done videos of two King Crimson songs, but they are blocked (bummer, but I understand) - Robert Fripp is quite forward about guarding his work. You should, however, be able to post covers, so ... #PetraHayden "Red" Seattle, WA

Rich you got to tell Kel that this is Rush and that one listen don't cut it. Anyone who's a Rush fan knows the first time they spun an album it took a number of spins to really figure out what direction they were going in. In the end it was always an incredibly unbelievable experience but those first few listens there was always so many question marks because they are so above and beyond most musicians and the comprehension of how we think and this is a perfect example with Kel's comment. She needs to spend this one and most of the 80s Rush quite a bit. Especially if you get into something like chain lightning and yes that is off Presto. Another fantastic album Imo
