Rush - Subdivisions | FIRST TIME REACTION 

I love your reaction and it is the same drummer and he writes the lyrics… I remember when the song came out.. I still find so much meaning, and it stands the test of time as they are all amazing artists.

My absolute FAVORITE Rush song, and I love a lot of their music. It's just that, when this came out, **I** was that "outcast". While I didn't grow up in a Subdivision, I did "come of age" in a semi-rural area. I was born in a big city, and grew up in same big city.... but we moved in 1979 to a more rural area. In any case, this video was my youth. So it hits kinda hard.

Is the term you’re looking for ‘time signature’? Yes, the drummer can change it up, but make no mistake all the musicians have to follow the same time signature. They are masters at it.

This was the first song by Rush that was led by Geddy on the keyboards, a change-up that was interesting and helpful for the band. The lyrics were also from personal experience.

Living in the suburbs right outside the city of New Haven Connecticut, I totally identified with this song.

This is the song that got me to take a deep dive into Rush's catalog less than one year ago. I was only 5 years old when this song came out, so I obviously have no memory of it from 1982. Now, as an adult, I listen and I relate to it remembering what a nerdy introvert I was in school. :) They were young here; Geddy and Alex would have been 29 years old in 1982 and Neil would have been 30 years old. I also just love the sound of this song. Geddy' became a more melodic singer throughout the '80s and into the '90s, which I enjoy, because I love the melodic sounds of the 80's keyboard era in general. Yes, that is the one and only Neil Peart on drums, and I love Alex's guitar solo here. It's always fun to watch Geddy multitask on bass, keyboards and vocals. For a future reaction, I suggest the live version of 'Mission' from Birmingham in 1988. Make sure you listen for Alex's incredible guitar solo!

I think it's time to get caught up. Rush changed drummers in 1974. The first album had the old drummer. All recorded Rush has had Neil Peart since 1975. You should know this by now.

Great reaction!! Why does it sound so good? Because it's Rush! 3 masterclass musicians that at equally one-third of a whole, making complex, rhythmic, meaningful, poignant hard rock! Seriously - I get chills every time I hear those opening synth chords! To all us socially awkward nerds - this song truly struck a nerve! I was never part of the 'cool' crowd, so Neil's lyrics felt as though it were speaking directly to me! The pressures to fit in, conform, join the rat race, be successful - all the difficulties of youth, teen years - all summed up in one spectacular song! Cheers.

The only album to feature their original drummer John Rutsy was their very first album that came out in 1974. Due to health issues and musical differences he left the band and Neil Peart joined the band in 1974. He was a better fit with Alex and Geddy and he remained the drummer ubtil the band retired in 2015. He is considered one of the best drummers in rock.

Yes, it's the same drummer. The one, the only, Neil Peart. The Professor. He was amazing as a drummer a lyricist, and as a person. RIP Neil. All of them are/were amazing human beings.
