The uneven beat is called 7/8 time. Most songs will have 4 quarter notes per measure; 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, et cetera, and so is written as 4/4 time. If you were to write that as 8/8, that would sound 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + et cetera with 8 8th notes. *+ = "and" With 7/8, you're counting 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 et cetera. You're missing that last + after the fourth beat, meaning there are only 7 8th notes.

I was in high school when this song was released. Early 80's. I completely identified with it's message, "Be cool or be cast out". This song and others turned me into a serious musician. Not listening to "pop" crap and seeking out more meaningful artistic stuff. Yet all these years later I'm still COOL playing in rock bands while the High School "popular crowd" are all old & fat with 3 kids & broke!! I feel you GET IT! Great music / lyrics have nothing to do with race or politics. It's about REAL life. Anyway.... Great reaction!
@hubbsllc
@hubbsllc 3 года назад
The "changing beat" you're noticing is the the song switching among 7/8, 4/4, 7/4, and 6/4 meter. For instance, in the verse starting with the words "Drawn like moths..." it's in 4/4 but when the lyric hits "the timeless old..." in the next line it changes to 7/8 at the syllable "time" and stays in 7/8 for six bars, going back to 4/4 at the word "just." The choruses ("[Subdivisions] In the high school halls...") are in 6/4. Odd meter and meter changes are a hallmark of progressive rock and jazz-fusion; Rush, Genesis, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and King Crimson made heavy use of them.

It's tough for the younger generations to fully understand this song. Their typical social connections are just more synthetic and sanitized than ours. The whole idea of there being people who were misfits or nerds, truly being bullied, trying to fit into school and neighborhood cliques, going to the mall to hang out, basement parties and cruising the strip...you had to live around that time to fully appreciate this song.

Rush made music that is so interesting compositionally. Many people that are into “top 40 hits” just don’t get it. If you are looking for something danceable or something that you can even tap your foot along with, you have to look elsewhere. Rush music generally consists time signature changes and that’s what makes it appealing to me. And we haven’t even talked about the lyrics which are quite often deep, interesting and thought provoking.

Amazing how the lyrics of this particular song has you remembering the "cliques" that you strove to either be in, or shun. The way you want to go the city but as you get older, you realize that the suburbs where you grew up, is where you want to go back to. Free thinkers are dubbed freaks and those that don't follow the social norms or agree are singled out as different. When in truth, they are the ones who create the art, music etc.. Enjoy the music.

The lyrics of Subdivisions one can say that every generation has gone through this period of adolescence. All of us during this period of life have so many things that come before us and we choose to observe, listen, mimic. Some things we adopt and become how we act, behave and present ours elves to the ones closest to us and the world. Some for the better and some for the worst. Know that there are things in life that one does not have to go through in order to find out if they’re of benefit to us or not. Rush has many songs with deep meaning. I hope you do more reactions on their songs and have the lyrics so that you can follow along and not miss the message. Stay safe, much peace and love to you and your family now and in this coming year !!!

Rush had a pretty solid fan base following 2112 that grew significantly with Moving Pictures. At this stage of their career many of the early fans did not like the change in sound and style, most of those remained fans however, they were dismissive of anything after Moving Pictures. IMO this song open the door to many who became a huge part of, what is now known as, the greatest fan base ever. If you were to take a poll of long time Rush fans, the number of people who first connected with this song would be significant, possibly more than any other individual song. Not their most complex, but maybe their most impactful.

@@jeffmurray1681 and I respect that position. Many others share the same opinion. I choose to look at their catalogue as a whole vs. different eras. For example I do not think Presto is better than 2112, but I do like “the Pass “more than I like “Tears”. I think to totally dismiss an Album or a Song based on a calendar date could lead to missing out on a lot of very good music, but again it’s just my opinion. ✌️☝️☝️✌️
@johndavis9196
@johndavis9196 3 года назад
@@jeffmurray1681 nothing wrong with either of those choices, and I would be from the same era, pretty much. La Villa Strangiatto was the song that first captured my attention. I’m also a big fan of Dream Theater and just recently Haken is sneaking in to my rotation little by little.

this song takes a few listens to get used to, then that haunting keyboard chords & melody gets into your head and it becomes addictive. Ive been listening to it for 38 years and i still love it, and still cant play it perfectly on my drums. The subdivisions are those ugly rows of houses all packed tightly together, and where is a young person supposed to find inspiration coming from that kind of upbringing. Im glad i got to see one show from every tour since 1978, 19 times Ive seen them. They've got 20 albums of great songs, so get busy ! BTW you're very beautiful

These songs as you will discover will make you think and hopefully continue the hope they gave us then, but still sadly haven’t accomplished!!! 🥺George Carlin said it best when he said education is only to create people “smart enough for the paper work, but not critical thinking!!” Love your reactions and your family is the bomb!!!👌👍✌️😎

#same. As a older black guy, (I'm 54 yrs old) I was not suppose to listen to rock n roll and was supposed to listen to R&B only. Needless to say, I tried to fit in but, I was unhappy. So, at the expense of being 'cast out', I did a lot of alone time with my beloved Rock n Roll. Nowadays, it's more accepted in a way because if you listen to another genre, people of your peers are less likely to 'cast out' from what I seen. Like in your case, you listen to my favorite band RUSH and don't make that stank face most women make when they are on. I hope people continue to evolve around music because color do not come out of speakers...

I'm from inner-city & even though none of the scenery (houses, school halls, teens) looked or felt anything like what I saw growing up, the message is the key. I was never marginalized but being in a band as a high schooler, I was kind of a loner. Always wanting acceptance despite a good set of friends & many parties. I think we all, at one point or many , feel isolated. The world tests us with it's vices & pleasures. I often wonder what this kind of truth to one's self this upbringing fosters.

I was in Jr High / HS in the 80s ( era of vid ). I am a wheelchair / crutch user from birth. I fought for an actual education. Not special Ed. Based on physical disability alone. Not merit / my actual test scores. I was quote mainstreamed. Since 4th grade. As the first & most of the time only, wheelchair user. Until I got to college. Blending in. Was never going to be a realistic expectation / option. It wasn't in my nature. I couldn't say weather this was a chicken & egg result. I was never a follower. Always spoke up if I felt something was wrong. Had friends, but never did anything I didn't want to. Disability as part of the equation / a bedrock of identity. Meant I absolutely new who I was from a very early age. Fighting for your rights in general. In my case access / an equal education. From an early age will do that. Blending in was never part of my calculous. Getting an education / becoming undeniable. Just to earn opportunities was.
