Without a doubt one of the best songs ever written, ever sung, ever aired. It’s timeless and it’s an undeniable masterpiece.

Subdivisions spoke to a lot of teens, Canadians and Americans alike.

Subdivisions is one Rush song with lyrics more powerful than the music because of the social commentary.

Not only is this the greatest song of all time, but there is so much more to this song than meets the eye. I personally know several people who have done their Ph.D. theses on RUSH and this song specifically. Aside from its OBVIOUS meaning (i.e. people who are not considered "cool" or "popular" being cast out from society), there is actually a "double meaning" to this song. The secondary meaning is the irony of people from the big city wanting to escape to where there is peace and quiet (i.e. the suburbs) yet the people from the suburbs want the "action" and want to go down to the big city to find it/experience it. Hence, we have subdivisions socially as well as geographically. It's almost the "flip side of the coin" kind of song. The more you listen to it, the more you appreciate its many, many layers and (as always) magnificent musicianship by the greatest band of all time. Not my opinion, but simply a fact of life.

Rush was already my favorite band and then they released this when I was 15yo. I was right in the crosshairs of the message in this song. This still fits today and if anything, with social media, this pressure on kids has amped up tremendously. I have a 16yo son and 21yo son. They grew up on their Dad's Rush and luckily I was able to get them to a couple of shows before the band retired. One of my greatest joys ever was watching them reacting to live Rush.

Every time I hear the intro to this song it just reaches around my soul. I'm not the most emotionally advanced person around. But this is just one of those songs that digs deeper.

Neil's lyrics floor me every time I listen to this song. It's in my top 5 favorite Rush songs, and it's THE song that made me a life-long Rush fan. As a 14 year old kid, hearing this for the first time I thought, "oh shit...these guys know how I feel." You grow up in a subdivision as most kids do and instantly through school, shopping malls, parents, peer pressure...you're asked to conform. "Be cool or be cast out." Individuality is discouraged or just outright ridiculed. "Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone." The great attraction for teens is to get out of the subdivision; to experience freedom with your peers. Travel into the city, walk the streets of downtown, cruising around to be noticed. "Drawn like moths, we drift into the city. The timeless old attraction, cruising for the action." The irony here is that conformity is still in demand. "In the basement bars, in the backs of cars." Any escape might help to smooth The unattractive truth But the suburbs have no charms to soothe The restless dreams of youth Suddenly the teens are now adults. Working a 9 to 5 job in the very city they were so drawn to in their youth. The great promises the city and all its wonders seem to hold were just lies to lure the youth into the jobs of accountants, lawyers, etc. Adults who sold out their true desires because society told them what they truly wanted was wrong...conform or be cast out. Stuck at a job they have no emotional investment in, they long for the workday to be completed. The tragic twist for these adults is that the very thing they wanted to escape...their subdivision...is the very thing they now long for at the end of another workday. Some will sell their dreams for small desires Or lose the race to rats Get caught in ticking traps And start to dream of somewhere To relax their restless flight Somewhere out of a memory Of lighted streets on quiet nights

Just an amazingly deep and relatable song to millions of youth both then and now. Three kids from Toronto that became famous me of the most talented and amazing bands ever. Just awesome.

I totally agree that this song is as close to perfection as possible. Many Rush songs are, in my opinion. My favorite band ever. So many songs from their 80's work is incredible. The Analog Kid, Time Stand Still, Red Sector A, all of Moving Pictures. So many. I loved watching your reactions to this one.

Life is so much better with music in it, but a life with Rush in it doesn't get any better. Neil's lyrics resonate so well with us as human beings. We all can relate in some way. This song is just hauntingly beautiful. For such a high energy song it just makes you want to stop and listen and reflect. It's like the sound of Silence but on the other side of the spectrum. It's just as powerful to my soul.

As a Canadian, nothing makes me more proud than knowing that Rush is a product of our culture. 'Subdivisions' was released when I was 13 and remains my favorite Rush tune.

RIP Neil Peart. My first concert was RUSH 2112. Awesome. Neil was a legend and the words he wrote were art wether it’s a song, poem or books. The talent of the drums were awesome. He put his love into it and you felt it. My husband and I connect through the beauty of music as well.

Been loving your channel since I discovered it a few days ago. I have been a fan of Rush since I turned 6 in 1979. I will be 46 next month. For me, like most Rush fans will tell you, they are the soundtrack of my life. I was blessed to have parents that embraced my Rush fandom at an early age. If I look back on my life, I can point to a Rush album that was the album which helped shape me at that point. They are the reason I am a musician today and I owe so much to that band. I know you get lots of requests and a couple of Rush tunes to check out that will stir your emotions are Losing It from Signals and The Garden from their last album, A Clockwork Angels. With that said, the one song that always stirs my emotions is Time Stand Still; not because it is my favorite song (that would be Limelight), but because my mother loved to listen to that song. She kept a cassette of Hold Your Fire in her car and we'd listen together. She passed in 2008, so hearing that tune, always gives me goosebumps and I always feel like she is with me when I turn it on. Hope you go to see Dream Theater on the current tour. It is epic to see them live. I'll be at the Beacon Theater on next week for their show. Anyway...you two are awesome. Much love.

This song speaks to really almost everyone in life. The words in the back is a nice touch. Seeing 2 people dig it, one for the first time is cool beans. The power of RUSH.

In my high school back in the early 80's they held an assembly which had the theme of "Battling Peer Pressure". As part of the assembly they had a multimedia presentation that featured "Subdivisions". It was absolutely AMAZING!

Watching the music video of this takes me back to that time, where I was the kid in the video... even when I first listened to this song in 1983, it struck a chord in me that very few songs have been able to do, to the point where I personally identify with it. I could tell by watching you both that you two went to different places through the song.

I can see it like it was yesterday, me walking into my third grade class near the beginning of the school year in 1982 with my Rush Signals album art notebook locked in my trusty blue Trapper Keeper. I still remember a girl from my class commenting on the cool Dalmatian on the cover...mostly because she like dogs, and thinking how cool I was. "Subdivisions" is still my all time favorite song from Rush. I listen to it at least once a day...and every time, it makes me smile. Guess what, Kel-n-Rich...I'M SMILING RIGHT NOW. Thank you.

Well, Kel n Rich, grats to you both. I'm lucky enough to have found my mate too, after a whole bunch of trying. 'Subdivisions' is one of the soundtrack songs of my life. I can honestly say that 5 of the best minutes of whole life were in 1982, when I ripped the cellophane off 'Signals', loaded it into my Walkman, and my mind just *exploded* . Welcome to the wonderful world of music without autotune :)

I'm in your generation 42 in three days and that song when I first heard it was a revelation! I was the outcast the different one, the handicapped artsy emotional kid. And so an easy target for the bullies and far too young to realize then that so many of them targeted kids like I was because they had their own damage and didn't know how to deal with it constructively. So this was another song that made me think "Oh my god! Someone really gets it!" Love it. Thanks for your great reaction to this wonderful song.

Growing up in Willowdale and going to Northview Heights makes this song my favorite of all time. Without even realizing it I lived this song in my youth. Always craming into my buddies Mustang and driving up and down Yonge St on Friday night and going to Video Invasion hanging out trying to be cool in front of the girls. Geddy and Alex lived it.

They played this song on nearly every tour they went on from 1982 when it was released and I've never gotten tired of it having seen every tour since 1982 until the finale in 2015. Some songs like 'The Trees', 'Tom Sawyer' and even 'Limelight' I had tired of from tour after tour (not that any were bad songs, obviously), but this one is just so well constructed and such a period piece that spoke to me as a confused, skinny 12 year old kid, that it's never lost the impact it had on me.

Lovely reaction, and LOL at the story at the start. Lerxst's solo in this always gives me goosebumps. It's one of my favourites. Me and a friend travelled from the UK to see them in Calgary and Vancouver in 2015 and the solo almost reduced me to tears because I kept thinking "This is the last time I'll ever see them play this". Signals was the first of their albums that I bought on the day it was released, and it was also the first tour I saw them on in 1983, so it will always hold a special place for me. My fave Rush jam.. Takes me back to being a 6 yr old kid again..

I was 16 and would listen to Rush and this song with my best friend at his parents house. Except there were no parents as they lived 3000 miles away and left a mansion to my friends 19,18 year old sisters. I basically lived there 6 nights a week. It was fun but we both kinda knew that nobody really cared about us. All of our outsider friends thought we had the world by the tail. We were the cool ones in the basement bars in the backs of cars but it all was a bit hollow. Holed up in a bedroom at parties smoking weed playing God of who or who wasn't allowed. It was our only power over jocks and the Cheerleaders who only wanted to be your friends on the weekends.

One of my top ten favourites of all times. Never get tired of it.

I had my teen years in the then suburbs of Agincourt north of Toronto and damn this song since it was released rings deep... I lived on the east side of Vic Park and Lifeson was just as subdivided on the west side in willowdale.. So much depth and true meaning..

Kel, with rush I humbly suggest read the lyrics while listening to the music. I know your story and it’s nice to see someone able to catch up on all they missed out on. The message in the music of rush just takes to a whole new dimension. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

No other song by them deserves to be a #1 hit more then this one. Lyrically, musically, vocally it’s ALL THERE, and it even contains that elusive “hook” ya know.

This is my all-time favorite Rush song. Perhaps cos it's one of the first ones i heard form them ever, and it was during a much simpler (albeit more painful) time in life (mine, and in general). The one good thing the made existence tolerable was music.

For the reasons you stated about peer pressure, it"s why some much of their music is timeless.

I have loved RUSH since before I started playing drums as a teenager. This song is my SECOND favorite after Limelight. BOTH songs spoke clear understanding into my life as a teenager about how the isolation I was feeling personally had to do with the fact that I was a little different from others because of my being a musician. This song spoke to me about my isolation and Limelight helped me see that my love of playing music was something that not everyone could understand, and that was ok.

Rush's synth era was fundamental in their development, essential to their survival, and to my ears, one of their best. I am glad the band remained a Rock band to the core, but I am also happy they have this unique chapter in their portfolio - after all, a good wine cellar is stocked with a variety of colours and flavours, for how dull it would be to just have dozens of bottles of chateau 2112.
