Genuinely one of the best songs they’ve ever written, everything about this song is perfectly placed. That melodic bassline, mid scooped guitars, flanger and tremelo effects, everything is spot on. RIP Neil
I heard Geddy say in an interview say that this was his hardest song to play and sing, ever. As usual he said he wrote the bass parts independent of the vocals and wrote them the way he wanted them to go. It wasn't till later when he tried to put them together that he realized that it was incredibly difficult to sing and play these parts together! He said something to the effect of "I had to go out to the woodshed and work for quite a while to get this one together"
Yeah didn't Geddy sometimes have to get Neil to adapt the lyrics a bit so he could also sing it live as well as on the album. It'd be great to see different versions of those songs to see what was changed.
They opened with this on their R40 stop in Houston. Minds were immediately blown. And did not stop being blown for roughly the next... 3 hours? 4 hours? Was kinda hard to keep track of time. Holy crap these guys can rock. If you have not see Rush live, please, PLEASE go see them. You won't regret it.
Nathan Roe I saw them when they were in st. louis on the 14th. This is on the highlight reel of my life. Notice on the set behind them they went back in time til they were in a high school. that was a really mind numbing experience.
The drum beat pattern you hear at the beginning and several times throughout this song is the famous 'Peart ride pattern' (heard in the chorus of Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions, La Villa, many others..) moved to 2 toms instead of the usual ride bell/snare. Fun fact.
The bass riffs on this are beyond amazing. My fav tune off the album with the Garden. You can compare this song and lyrics to the lives of those that have committed mass atrocities. A really deep song and dark one especially.
If you love playing enough, and you practice a song long and hard enough, you can remember every little detail. I don't even sing in my band, but I know almost all the lyrics because of learning where cues and such are in the songs. Also Geddy Lee is just a beautiful genius of a man. :P
@ mr michael,almost all Rush songs have double and triple meaning requiring thought and pondering. One reason Rush is a popular band for thinkers. The syncopation between the lyric melody have unique timings. " the lenses inside of me that turns the world black" . "The missing part of me that grows around me like a cage". If those aren't some of the best lyrics??
+kenny play I AGREE THAT THIS SONG RESONATES HEARTILY. However on the subject of many meanings- To truly get this album you HAVE to read the book. Rush finally made a full concept album after almost 40 years, and it is possibly their best work. Neil got together with a steampunk author and there is a Clockwork Angels novel. Even for a non- Rush fan it is a great read.

I always thought the lyric was "I'm missing part of me that goes around the lighted cage" which I thought was a play on "lighted stage vs lighted cage" which I thought was cooler....Oh well.
I watched an interview with Neil and i believe he said got chills when Geddy finally got to sing to lyric line , A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage!!!! What an incredible chorus!!! And the whole song
I like this one. All except for the vengeance part. I feel this song in my experiences with the world. In the novel Clockwork Angels, the anarchist blows things up and hurts INNOCENT PEOPLE. Heartless monsters are cut out of persistent anger and get deeper and deeper into being the victims of some kind of oppression. The Scarlet Mist is so tricky. Those who force THEM SELFS to persist through the fright of uncertainty and through the hurt of unjust paine with love in their hearts find humble ground ready for creation. Then you can grow truth and forgiveness in love.

Ignore mark demell; he doesn't know what he's talking about. He clearly misinterpreted the album. As a Christian, I can say that this album does not offend God in any way. This is an album about deciding whether there should be strict laws or complete chaos.
I forgot to mention, RUSH is not a literal cult. The term "cult band" is used to show that a band has a lot of loyal fans. They don't worship demons or idols.
This is just such a weird part of the album... I love this song... It's just I wonder why this is the only song that's from a different point of view. Is it to understand the Anarchist later on? Anyone have any theories behind it?
The anarchist was a big part of the book of course, even when he wasn't actually doing anything just as presents as a disturbing Force, help to drive the motives of the government to suppress and control the people, using fear of the anarchist. Although when we finally meet the anarchist we realize that he was just a different person who, had his own issues growing up, felt like an outcast, although extremely wise and knowledgeable in his own right. (A lot like Rush fans?) The anarchist of course doesn't see himself as an evil force, just sees himself as an opposing Force to help remake the government in order to free the people. Of course, isn't that what most tyrants and Anarchists do!

Why did they produced this so badly....this could be such a good song to listen to but it is so dense it gives me an headache. The chorus is incredible but lost.
