If you go back to 1:14, you will see a quick shot of foot pedals. And again at 4:31, shows the whole picture. When they play this live, Geddy Lee sings the vocals and plays bass. When a song has keyboards, he plays those as well. When he does, he plays the bass line with the foot pedals. Very talented musician. The drummer, Neil Peart, whose nickname is "the professor" is considered to be one of the greatest drummers ever. May he R.I.P.
I am similar to many, grew up on the Beatles, The Stones, YES, Wings, Led Zep, Floyd, and so many other amazing bands. It's like Rush was all of them put into a blender, and so much more.
Yes, it’s only three guys, Geddy Lee on bass, and keyboards, Alex Lifeson on guitar(s), and Neil “The Professor” Peart on drums and percussion. Sadly, Peart died 3 years ago this month at age of 67 from a brain tumor. He was also the principal lyricist of the band. Rush is considered one of the premier progressive rock bands of all time. If you really want to see some of their most amazing, complex pieces, check out “La Villa Strangiato“ from their album, “Hemispheres.”
Spirit Of Radio is the next logical choice for hearing. I think it is the best song form Rush because they pack so much music in less than 5 minutes. It is crazy for a "commercial" track!
RusH was composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands. Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
Finally! You got to my boys. Hopefully, you will go down this rabbit hole. Rush is quite a unique band. Only 3 dudes who are masters at their craft. They have the unique ability to play with great musicianship, yet package it in a way where it's accessible to the masses. Another amazing thing about Rush is their deep thought-provoking lyrics. Which was written by their drummer Neil Peart. Sadly he passed 3 years ago.
Rush in my opinion, Greatest band ever. Technically great and imaginative beyond thier years. At the time not many bands could hold a candle to them. Alot of fans also didn't quite understand alot of it either. Girls couldn't relate nothing they could consistently dance to, because of the constant time changes. They have 4 or 5 different stages of the band. Early 70's Prog Rock 80's more keyboards were brought in. 90's they found a perfect blend of keyboards and guitar. The 2000's thier final drive of just pure hard rock.
@@loosilu Being a Rush fan girl must be sick, I wish there was an all girl prog rock band that would allow me to experience the same situation in reverse lol
@@michaelakkerman407 sure sure! I heard Rush in the 80s because of my brother and hsi friends, and they straight up told me Rush was not for girls. lOL!
Hey guys! One guitar player, drummer. The bass player is the keyboardist and singer. By the way, he plays all of those when he does this song live. This song has been sampled a lot. This drummer DOES touch all those. Neil Peart is considered one of the best drummers of all time, and many put him #1.
Rush is the brass ring, the epitome of musicianship and Neil Peart set the bar for drummers. I'm so glad you're not familiar with them because this is gonna be fun watching you guys explore their music.
Oh Canada 🇨🇦 baby! RUSHwas one of the most talented bands to ever do it...The Professor kicking ass all over that drum kit! Geddy on bass, vocals and keys and Alex one of the most underrated guitarist there ever was. This dropped in 1981.
Someone probably said this below already, but when Neil Peart (RIP), the drummer, was asked if he got sick of always having to play this tune in live shows, said no, because it was a really hard song to play, and he was thrilled when he didn't mess up his part.
Rush, like Steely D., is an iconic band with a rich and long history. Their music has evolved over the years with a catalogue that ranges from epic concept tunes to more radio friendly tunes. Some of their early work is fairly experimental and can drift a little, but they honed their musical approach and became one of the premier pioneers of progressive rock. My choices for just a couple of essential reactions would be 2112, Xanadu, Natural Science, The Spirit of Radio, Freewill, Red Barchetta, Where's my Thing...so many more gems. Great Rxn!
No such thing as a best Rush album, Moving Pictures was their most commercially successful but 2112 is more iconic and Hemispheres more musically complex but that's the great thing about the band each album represents different things to different people depending on what resonated with them at the time. My personal favorite album is Permanent Waves but there are Gems throughout their catalog. 😊
This trio is beyond description really. They are absolute masters of tempo/time signature transitions. But, the best thing about these guys is their live performances are even better than their studio work. Buckle up fellas, Rush is about to take you on a wild and wonderful musical ride.
I envy you fellas Hearing this song for the very first time Yes, it's only 3 people Geddy Lee sings, plays the bass and keyboards Alex Liefson is the Guitarist AND THE MASTER, Neil Peart, the hands down greatest rock drummer of all time Man, I grew up with this song, and it never gets old. Today, I do envy you discovering this gem
You should watch the making of this song. They talk about the time signature and the drummer Neil Peart talks about how it's a hard song for him to play live.
Cool react guys. Rush is my all time favorite band. Geddy Lee is my favorite musician. Dude plays the meanest bass lines, sings, and plays keys at the same time, even live. He's a fugging legend.
In this video the vocalist, keyboardist and bassist are one person, Geddy Lee. Alex Lifeson (lead guitar) and Neil Peart (drummer) are the other 2 members. All 3 are fantastic musicians and definitely worth your time!
Geddy, the lead singer also plays the keyboards and the bass. It's amazing how good they sound with just 3 musicians in it. I saw a couple of concerts this past summer and one had 12 musicians including 2 drummers.
Yes boys welcome to our three Canadian masters..... 45 yrs of awesome music. Geddy Lee is lead vocals, bass, keys. The professor on Drums Neil Peart Alex Lifeson on guitar. You have no idea the rabbit hole you are embarking on. My boys my life would not be the same without them. Xanadu would be a great 2nd cut Cheers
Rush's time signature changes and fluidity are legendary! The switch ups are insane, but always serve the music. This rabbit hole is huge and well worth a deep dive. Check out YYZ in Rio or Leave That Thing Alone from the Time Machine Tour.
Rush is unmatched and Geddy is a phenomenon he plays base plays keys and base with his foot pedals or plays base and keys with his foot pedals and sings to boot......unreal and on Xanadau he plays bass keys and vice versa with pedals and rythym guitar unreal they were one of a kind
Rush is beyond awesome live! I wish I wasn't so wasted when I saw them in 1981 (11th grade for me) on their "Moving Pictures" tour but I do remember it sounded exactly like their albums (if not better) to the point of being mind boggling...Pink Floyd is still my #1 fav live. I saved all my concert tickets from the late 70s on, and for this Rush concert on Sep 14, 1980, I paid $9.50 general admission at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. Quite a small venue (less than 10,000 capacity) but the sound was loud and clear! Event t-shirts ran $15-25 depending on the type.
Gede Lee plays both keyboards and Bass, along with lead vocals. I think just for the video, they show him playing both at different times, because they want to convey that Gede plays both instruments in the Band. In the recording studio, he can play both instruments playing on different tacks, and then they are blended together. Also, remember "The Doors," didn't have a Bass player, because like with Rush, the keyboards have Bass pedals on the floor, so you can play Bass with your foot. Gede is one of the best Bassists in the world. Watch more Rush videos, and you can see for yourself. Thanks
Back in 5th grade in 1981 Philadelphia, I had a teacher who, after lunch every Friday, let us kids have the rest of the day to do whatever we wanted. We would play board games and paint, but we all would bring in our records & 45s. I grew up in a mixed-race neighborhood where we listened to all kinds of music and this song everyone loved. Including our teacher. Rush rocks and nice review 🤘
Don't believe your eyes, Rush is only three people. Three very amazingly talented people. Realize that this is the actual in the studio video of the actual recording. When they play live they reproduce this sound flawlessly with only three people. I've seen dozens of these Rush first reaction videos and without fail every single time those who are experiencing Rush for the first time are blown away.
3 people, singer also plays bass and keyboards. The drummer writes the lyrics. Live, the singer sometimes plays bass, sings, and plays keyboards with his feet
03:30 The keyboardist you are seeing is actually the singer. There are only 3 members. When it shows a wide shot of the 3 look at the keyboard on the floor below the guitarist. He plays the keyboard with his feet while on the guitar.
Yes, Geddy Lee is the bassist, keyboardist and vocalist with Neil Peart on drums and Alex Leifson on lead guitar. Check out their live performance of Xanadu. Probably one of their best performance videos and will be better seeing the band play in concert. They never wanted to create a song that the 3 of them could not play live, so you’ll see Geddy playing both instruments while singing at the same time. And you’ll see an even larger drum and percussion set around Neil!
Rush have a long history. Everything from first album to about 1982 is premium. They recorded many more but the early years were special. Anything live is gold. RIP Professor.
As a drummer and timekeeper, it’s satisfying to watch a reaction video of progressive rock and the dudes reacting are bopping their heads on beat. My OCD gets triggers when the head bop is off - good job fellas and go Brew Crew!
This band is seriously beyond words. Many of those commenting have tried valiantly, but I am sure they will all say their words are not adequate. Too much talent going on here, needs to be heard, can’t bd explained.
Just found your channel. I'm glad it was this song that you covered. I was fortunate to have seen them twice in the 1980's. Do a search here on RU-vid and watch their induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. Longest standing ovation in rock hall of fame history.
One of Rush's most popular songs is "Spirit of Radio". You really need to see them perform the song live onstage in Toronto in 2003 in front of 500,000 fans on a sunny summer afternoon. They start the song with a quick instrumental version of "Paint It Black" in tribute to the Rolling Stones and then it segues into a blistering version of "Spirit of Radio". It's one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen from any band.
Three members only. Geddy Lee: vocals, bass guitar, keyboard synthesizer and bass/synth foot pedals. Alex Lifeson: Guitar, foot pedal synth keyboards and backup vocals. Neil Peart : Drums, MidiKat drum pads and lyricist.
Guys! It IS a THREE-player band... The guy on base (Geddy Lee) does Base, Keyboards, AND Vocals. He has a special set of pedals that do base when he is on the keys. And there is only ONE guitar player... All three members are world-class musicians, with the drummer (Neil Peart, RIP) being a lot of great drummers' favorite drummer. Even Metalica used to listen to Rush before they got started. It was a kind of Led Zep sound at first, then it morphed with the times into different vibes. From heavy metal to synth, to whatever stroked their fancies.
Geddy Lee: bass, keyboards & foot pedal keyboards; Alex Lifeson: guitar, Neil Peart: drums Incredible band for 40+ years until Neil’s passing. Dig deeper please, they’re worth it
I was wondering when you guys would find out about this band..you just gotta react to Rush "Xanadu" Live 1981..you will witness pure genius..This is a shout out to you guys from the old Detroit metal head..
@@loosilu It rules!! That live video will change their mind on music ..The 70's RUSH is hard to be matched musically..arrangements and production for the time is out of control..Thanks for the shout out:)
