Russell Batiste, Jr. gets deep into the funk on his original composition, "Muthafunk Y'all," with Papa Grows Funk at the San Jose Jazz Festival circal 2005.
Russel put in more time into playing music with his people than any other musician in New Orleans. Not cause He was any kinda saint or philanthropist, no Russel just had more energy to put towards a plain ass jam session than any rockstar in the last 30years. Good stuff Russel. I hope you get to finish all those side projects in the next life.
A couple of months ago, I caught George Porter, Jr and his band in Sanford, FL (Great, great show!)...anyway, about halfway through, George was having fun and chatting up the audience...when his cell phone rang. He looked at it and said, "oh, I gotta take this"...it was Russell Batiste just looking to jam with George...he didn't know George was on the road, and certainly didn't know he was in the middle of a gig in Florida. It was great, George busted his b@lls for a minute before getting back to his performance. These guys are just straight up musicians...they live for the music above all else.
