So hes not allowed to have an opinion? I dont see an issue he has literally nothing to do with this new film so he is commenting purely as a fan and hes just repeating the doubts most of us have

Of course he’s allowed an opinion however, he’s not just purely a fan in this like you or me. Being the star of the original, his opinion can have a positive or negative effect on the film’s sales. I’m sure Ridley Scott would much rather prefer Crowe kept his negative comments to himself and when asked about the film just said something along the lines of what John said

@@darnell9806 I think purely just as a mate to Ridley he should have just kept his mouth shut haha look I see that its not a good look but the first was a borderline perfect masterpiece and Russell is most likely very proud of it and would rather not tarnish his legacy in a way, also my first instinct was probably exactly the same as Russell like why would they do this leave it alone lol

@@davidjames579 As someone who’s studied Napoleon at school, and is the son of a father who has always idolizes Napoleon, this was a major letdown. My father and I went to see it together with high hopes, and when the movie ended, he was more disappointed than me. A historical figure like Napoleon Bonaparte needs a longer runtime to tell its story properly. This movie should have been a miniseries instead to avoid its pacing issues. Ridley Scott is hit and miss filmmaker and this past decade is the perfect example, he’s been given the best material or historical story to bring to the big screen, and he squanders most of his historical epic for all types of reasons (exp: House of Gucci, Exodus: Gods & Kings), and always looses focus on the real story behind. While he makes many movies from different genres, he’s definitely lost his touch in bringing the heart and soul of a historical story, all for the sake of spectacle. This movie only thrives from its big epic scale from the production design, costumes, sound, and epic battle sequences, but rushes the story like a Wikipedia entry. Joaquin Phoenix does a good job, while it’s understandable that for American & British actors to do a French accent it comes off as comedic and even offensive, it’s selfish he didn’t have a British accent for this role, and his comedic timing felt completely disrespectful & unnecessary. Vanessa Kirby does her best to save the movie but doesn’t have enough screen time to do it. During this movie’s press tour, Ridley Scott has definitely become a pretentious & selfish filmmaker. It’s disrespectful the way he has responded to negative comments about the movie such as: “The French don’t even like themselves” to French critics. Or when he responded to historians criticizing the movie: “Excuse me, mate, were you there? No? Well, shut the fuck up”. I was excited for this movie, but I was also prepared to be let down this way given Scott’s track record. I love Ridley Scott’s work as a filmmaker, but so far right now, I don’t like him as a person.

He could have responded with something like the example you gave. But he didn't. There's nothing wrong with that. He said what he felt. Which is something a lot of people are terrified to do in this business. As far as directors criticizing other directors. Actors on actors etc. Why can't they? Why is that somehow bad etiquette for a professional to have a negative opinion of another professional's work when asked directly about it? I'm sure more people in the industry would love to say how they really feel about their colleague's work when asked. They probably would if their reasonably honest opinion didn't risk upsetting the most fragile ego that has the power to blacklist them. There's definitely a difference between being an obnoxious asshat, and just having an honest opinion. Crowe was fine here. He's at the point where he's already established himself and doesn't need to walk on eggshells with his responses. Lol More power to him.

Hard pass on Gladiator sequel. Gladiator was a complete movie. Not as in "perfect", because it wasn't; but it was a complete story. Sometimes, I just want Hollywood to leave well enough alone, because there are times when a project is already doomed to be "not as good as the first one" or, worst case scenario, it will actively destroy what they accomplished with the first one.

I like TLJ but it's not a great Star Wars film Johnson took subverting expectations and doing his own thing too far and it left TRoS to try to clean up his mess. As a standalone flick, it's great but it didn't work as well in the context of the 7 prior movies and especially didn't work as the middle of a well thought out trilogy which the newest 3 clearly were not.
