That’s the biggest insult you could say 😂 Chappell is the worst .. there’s a reason he suffered depression and went missing for nearly 17 years... Chappell did nothing but anti white skits... as a result he left a huge audience behind and divided himself from a potentially larger career... key and peel did it better and they equalise their black - white skits... unfortunately though... Jordan went off and made these movies that basically insinuate reverse racism... in my opinion he sunk too low and he could be a bigger director if he can put race aside...

They far surpassed them in the long term. To this day, you can describe them and people will laugh without any further context, like Monty Python sketches. Chapelle’s were very much of that time, and don’t hit as wide of an audience.

One thing that was very impressive and unique about Key & Peele was the cinematic aspect of the sketches. The sketches all felt like short films of their own with cinematic lighting and music, superb acting and filming on location. When Peele became a Director I was not surprised at all having watched his cinematic roots on Key & Peele.

When Conan mentions how Comedy and Horror have major similarities I always like to say that comedy and horror thrive when the creative is looking at the situation the main character is in and asks "Now how can I make this situation even worse for them?"
@bradylewis1037
@bradylewis1037 8 месяцев назад
Exactly. I look at horror as, what happens when comedy goes on too long and is taken to it's logical conclusions, and then after one becomes accustomed to these conclusions it becomes comedy again. There is this cycle of the two.

“Nope” really solidified Jordan’s skills in my mind. “Get Out” was a great premise but “Nope” had so many genius directorial choices that it puts him way higher on my list
@sliceserve234
@sliceserve234 8 месяцев назад
I'm not sure how to put this, and let me state that I am a huge fan of Jordan's work, but I could see as apparently you did some incredible flourishes of directorial skill in terms of what made it on to the screen, and that is a very difficult skill to acquire, but there is just something not smooth or not coherent or not realistic in almost how the entire movie (Nope) is set up. For example, at the beginning his father is killed from the coin dropping from the sky, and there is just no grief reaction or "oh my god my dad died" aspect in the script, and that type of "wait a minute, what the hell is up with these people" aspect continued throughout the film, and ultimately kept the film from being a true classic to my thinking. (I do think "Get Out" IS a classic.)

@@GregMuniz7 I would even have settled for a depiction of extended shock instead of grief, anything, but they just kill the character off and everything proceeds like nothing happened. I noticed Jordan was special in Mad TV, and I actually was a comedy snob at the time (despite being a teenager) and thought Mad TV was "lame" compared to the "intellectual" stuff I was watching like Late Night and TV Funhouse and Upright Citizens Brigade and Strangers with Candy. Jordan was an exception, like when he would play Montel Williams who would interview victims of abuse and get high at the same time for some reason, so much funnier than it sounds, and that is because it was ALL Jordan's incredible execution.

I think talented comedians have a depth of understanding of the human condition in ways many others don’t, which is how they’re able to figure out what people will find funny. Which also gives insight into the other emotions. Drama, fear, sadness, etc. it’s why comedians tend to do drama well also. It’s why I’m not surprised at all that Peele is able to do horror so phenomenally.

I am a sketch comedy fanatic, and in my opinion, Key and Peele is the greatest sketch show of all time. I have it above SNL, I Think You Should Leave, Monty Python, the Marx Brothers, and even the Chappelle Show. When I go back and watch Key and Peele episodes, I am amazed by the consistency of every sketch. We all remember Substitute Teacher and East/West Bowl, but I am always floored with how many classic sketches they string together in individual episodes. Everything is so well written, so well performed, and the last joke of every sketch is almost always the best, which is so incredibly difficult to do. I think a lot of people under rate the intelligence it takes to be a good comedian. That creative process requires an agile mind. Just look at Conan, Burr, Norm, Chapelle, any of the greats vs the B listers. they are brilliant in my opinion. I have enjoyed what comedians bring to my life since a child. One of the old greats I used to listen to as a child just died, Sheky Green. All those old borscht belt guys who showed up on the Ed Sullivan show were amazing, like Myron Cohen, Jackie Mason, etc. My thanks to all of them for bringing joy into my life.

Their show was so funny and it went out on top/ on their terms which makes it still legendary!

I don’t use the term often but I think Jordan Peele is a genius

Peele once said in an interview that the difference between comedy and horror is the music. I think about that all the time.

Great clip! @8:20 there's no way Conan hasn't thought of this connection b/w horror and comedy before. Tragedy and Comedy is a timeless juxtaposition/ dynamic relationship, and horror can be viewed as just a particular instance or subset of tragedy.

I love that Conan is so fawning at the beginning of this that Jordan can't even really get in a word. 😂

SNL? SNL can’t compare. SNL try to make you laugh and sometimes succeed, while this guy just makes you laugh consistently.

SNL problem will always be the host, having to work around a new person that has to be the star is very limiting.

The best sketch imo is the one where gang members meet. I thinks it’s called Trying Not To Laugh When The Other One Is Crying, or something in that line. I really can’t tell where Key is acting or where he is actually laughing. Such good stuff, makes me laugh every time 😂

Freddy Kruger's cardboard cutout in the local VHS rental store has left a lasting memory in my brain for 30 years now. I understand. My personal scariest horror is the short "Unedited Footage of a Bear". The build, the journey is just like falling into quicksand with no way out.

Among the late night shows Conan is the most brilliant because he chose to work indepedently aka self-employed but no offend to others late night show they're great service to us by entertaining us on cable tv although that job consume too much of their lives😅
