The analysis here ignores the obviously optimal strategy choice which would have been keeping Russell in front of Lewis, keeping Lewis with DRS AND having the ability to fend off Sainz. This would have resulted in Mercedes 5th and 6th, better than. 5th and 7th.

Rus has certainly got the talent and the team should look at him as number 1 in the future. Hence this is going to happen more and more till Lewis decides he not going to be able to get another w/c. Not to mention the ongoing improvements of the other top teams with solid drivers

russel corpuscle is not as good as sir lewis. russel's ego is what will keep him from achieving the same level, he gets a big head when making a big accomplishment and then he fucks up somehow and crashes out or his car says "eennnhhh! fuck you george, im gonna break now just to get that big head of yours in check"

Russell is getting a brutal lesson on life in F1's best/worst second seat. Best in that you're probably going to get a decent car. Worst in that Hamilton has an iron grip on Merc (with Toto fully on board) and rules it (and the UK F1 media/punditshere) via fear and vicious passive-aggressiveness. Even the most minor perceived slight against Lewis could cost someone their job, or if not that access to both him and Merc. He is a ruthless teammate and will do anything and everything to undermine his paddock-mate, and the entire Merc garage (even Russell's side) knows not to cross him. As long as they're both there Toto will back Lewis in every way, that second seat is a torture test of being thrown to the wolves and subject to endless attempts to undermine. I worried about George going into it, but thought if anyone was strong enough to handle it he was, and at least he was British, the fans and media would at least give him SOME support, but it's clear the strain is getting to him. He looks haunted these days and looks to be cracking under the pressure (Singapore.) Bottas was almost emotionally destroyed by the experience, and Nico literally QUIT, leaving tens of millions on the table rather than stay and deal with it. Fernando despises the man. Etc. Russell will either be broken, or become tough as nails and able to handle anything. I hope it's the latter...he has the pace to be a title winner.

I can see the McLaren struggle after Lewis leave Mercedes. Every team want a Hamilton and Vasseur will put his veto when he's available.

To be honest I don't really agree with you. I think (and that is just a personal opinion) that they know that this year is gone. Lewis is 3rd and don’t expect him to go 2nd while George is 8th with 115 points, same as Lando and they need him Challenge Charles for the 6th place. They also renewed Lewis’s contract for 100m (if not mistaken for 2 years) so, yeah, I think these are all random events which we shouldn’t emphasize

russell has lost his chances of fighting up front now. he will never ever get close to trouble hamilton.

Along comes George and Toto's business mind sees the opportunity. Could it be that Toto is having to play two games: one to support Hamilton (who in my opinion will not win another World Championship as he's making too many careless mistakes) and the other to keep George enthusiastic to win as he sees his young driver as the successor to Hamilton. Interesting that you commented that no-one was there to support Hamilton in his podium wins.
