Russell Simmons delves into the history of how he met Rick Rubin and how their partnership became responsible for building Def Jam. "[Jazzy Jay] brought me Rick Rubin. He said, 'This the n---a who made the record.' 'Him?!' You know he didn't look like the n---a who made the record. Rick had all these drum beats, and Rick was a part of the group The Beastie Boys. I was starting a record company and I was interested in the Beastie Boys." From there Rush says the both of them went in 50/50 to start Def Jam and how Rick's production was a phenomenal aspect to the industry - as Rubin is "the most talented producer in the history of the world."
Listen above to hear the story of Def Jam's beginnings as Rush tells it, what led to them splitting, and the prospect of the Def Jam movie.

rick rubin Created Def Jam in his collage dorm from wiki : Def Jam was founded by Rick Rubin in his dormitory in Weinstein Hall at New York University and its first release was a single by his punk-rock group Hose. Russell Simmons joined Rubin shortly after they were introduced to each other by Vincent Gallo

def jam is the best rap label of all time..they were like the Motown records of rap. ll cool j, run-dmc, the beastie boys, public enemy, red & meth, jay, dmx, ja rule, foxy brown, warren g, onyx, epmd, montell Jordan, dru hill, etc... so many talented artists. I wish russ would take back the company and find brand new talent for this generation, they really don't know shit about good music these days.

It's TOO LATE to do Krush Groove over, I think! A lot of people who listen to Rap music TODAY don't know the history of DEF JAM like we did when Krush Groove, the movie, FIRST came out, if they remade it, I think it would be a FAILURE!!! Though, DEF JAM IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE GREATEST HIP HOP RECORD LABEL EVER, because of Russell Simmons; with all the artists he signed, with all the joint ventures and with all the P & D deals he gave out! Doing Krush Groove, the movie, over would be like making a movie about Berry Gordy and Motown, only older people would go out to see it, not the young. I don't know how you could pull off a GOOD DEF JAM MOVIE OR THE MAKING OF ONE, TODAY?!! ..... But, I would definitely pay to see it, 'cause I know the history of Def Jam and Russell Simmons is one of the greatest record executives/record producers/artist managers/multimedia content producers/businessmen of all time, EASILY!!!

T THORN so just cause he speaks with good sense and doesn’t stereotypically speak like a black person that all of the sudden makes him white? Black people are getting more and more ignorant each generation. I guess if he was slurring and mispronouncing every one of his words and speaking like he had no damn sense, then you’d claim him as one of your kind.

@@eftuniversity4648 Dilla touched every genre. If we’re talking accolades he never got his flowers, he was nominated for some grammy’s for Common’s Like Water for Chocolate and Janet Jackson Got Till it’s Gone but he produced some major albums and singles from De La Soul Stakes is High, A Tribe Called Quest’s Love Album and Beats Rhymes and Life. I mean from early eminem and proof, to slum village, busta rhymes, erykah badu and the list goes on. His discography is huge. All this until his untimely passing at 32 from lupus. He’s your favorite producer’s favorite producer. From Kanye to Pharrell etc. All that aside he’s my favorite producer because no one has impacted me musically than him.

To djvlad, hi. May-I-please wish Mr Simmons, a Happy-2020? May-I-offer a-little light-heartedness? When you had-your-series with your wife. Did you ask-her if she found Hiroshima and Nagasaki Psychedelic, to-win-her? Seriously, I believe that your Def-Jam videos, of the early 1980's ought-to-be compared to now-a-days videos? People should bother-to-see the inner-self, that was put-into those.
