He's led the league in passes behind the Line Of Scrimmage for five years straight now. This became his habit because he lost the ability to scramble to find a vantage point from where he could see the field, stop then throw. So now he panics instead. & throws to his check-downs. & I keep thinking that Payton _knew_ this but some people think that The Problem (because Payton schemed for him to always *have* the check-downs) was that Russ kept acting like he didn't need these, then come game-time would look for maybe one receiver down the field then throw to the check-down. & he kept doing this on _3rd_ downs. So he was killing drives. The bulk of his TDs came off of short fields caused by the defense getting TOs but almost, or perhaps really none of the drives they started at their own 20 went for scores. Too many passes behind the LOS created 3rd & longs which meant the D knew a pass was coming, so more pressure, so he threw to the check-down again. It was constant. Over 23% of his passes in '23 I think. You can't do that & survive in the NFL.
