4:50 I believe it was initially a probing attack across the front to locate weak points, but as the Russian saw more success than expected they jumped at the chance and pushed further than initially planned.
@Funko777
@Funko777 2 месяца назад
Totally plausible, I believe the total Russian force was observed as 30-50k, unsure how many of those are actual combatants. If we assume all are combatants (they're absolutely not though) 30-50k isn't even enough to take 1/3 of kharkiv if we base the casualties on what was seen in Bahkmut and during the Ruzzian campaign thus far. I think people keep forgetting Ukraine was never intending to sit directly on the border. That's a good way to catch some Z artillery with your face or get easily flanked because your position is super obvious. I could see the Russian conscripts being surprised at this and thinking the UA defenses must just be bad and pushing their luck past the distance their original mission intended. However, they'd be wrong because the Ruzzian government does not care to train them as a professional volunteer force. They will soon realize why that land was so easy to occupy whenever they finally make it to the actual strong points and defensive lines UA fell back too (like smart boys).
@voldemarvaglaots6690

@@Funko777, Russian conscripts are far away from front line. Russia get Kharkiv without need to really fight over it or in it. In our news in Austria the main reason stated for the offensive was to take Belgorod out of Ukrainian artillery range and to attempt to create the buffer zone that ensures that. Furthermore yesterday the news came US Secretary of State, stated that the US won't attempt to dissuade Ukraine from using American Missiles against targets within Russia itself, that they don't encourage it but will allow it.
@yarugatyger1603
@yarugatyger1603 2 месяца назад
Furthermore I agree that Ukrainian news could be more truthful, I've been watching the channel "Reporting from Ukraine" for the past few months for some details I wouldn't get anywhere else and sure I get those there but if I believed everything he said then the situation at the frontline would be butterflies and roses peaceful because they're dealing with everything that's thrown at them with such military superiority that they don't need more men or weapons. I doubt that that's the case and I think that falsification of truth doesn't benefit anyone who is trying to solve the issues in this conflict. Yes I believe they're doing what they can to hold Russia at bay and inflict massive casualties, but I'm also aware that they don't have the means to effectively push them back and in channels like these that fact goes unstated.

It’s funny that people think that building fortifications on the BORDERS of your ENEMY is the same as fixing a pothole in your local neighborhood. Russia built the Syrovkin line INSIDE Ukraine in half the time Ukraine had to build ANY defense in the north. It's hilarious that people refuse to see the corruption in Ukraine. There were supposed to be defensive lines and fortifications built, they weren't built. No mine fields, no trenches, no fortifications, no dragons teeth. Look at a topographic map of the area, then tell me how Russia OWNING the high ground for miles around, putting Russian artillery easily in range of Kharkiv is good for Ukraine. Oh... the Russians haven't been stopped, let alone at 5K.
@Jason-hl8uj
@Jason-hl8uj 2 месяца назад
Clueless… various maps & geo located footage show they’ve penetrated further. The Ukrainians have had 18 months to build fortifications on the entire eastern front especially in Kharkiv Oblast & Sumy oblast. If Russia could build hundreds of km’s of fortifications along the entire southern front on Ukrainian land, Ukraine could have done the same but they didn’t, one word, corruption.

@@glintongordon6811 Russia has an overwhelming artillery advantage over Ukraine, so it's not quite as simple as: "well, if Russia could build the Surovikin line, Ukraine should have been able to do it too". This would also go on to partially explain why the fortifications north of Kiev are much more robust than the ones North of Kharkiv, since the area north of Kiev borders Belarus rather than Russia, and with Belarus being formally neutral, the Ukrainians could most likely construct those defenses without worrying about being harassed by russian strikes. All that being said though, incompetence, corruption and misjudgements could all be possible explanations also.

not allowing Ukraine to use western weapons in russia makes it kinda hard to protect the border. Negotiation is a non-starter. This is a different war compared to Vietnam and Afghanistan. Afghanistan was a asymmetric war where a conventional military was against a guerrilla force which is incredibly difficult to defeat with conventional.means as they can hide amongst the populace and receive aid while remaining hidden....and mostly stuck to using IED's because anytime there was a gunfight they got their asses handed to them. Vietnam was a combo of conventional forces in the form of the NVA and asymmetric warfare with the Viet-Cong and the rules of engagements set by Washington ensured the U.S forces were not able to do what they needed to do. This is a conventional war that has taken a hard turn towards to attrition warfare. Unfortunately, Russia has an advantage in such a war as they have a massive population to draw from and vast stockpiles left over from the Soviet era and despite the technological superiority of the West, it would have to be the Ukrainians who have to use the equipment and that takes time to train, supply and deploy, time the war will not wait for. It also doesn't help that the West does not have the industry base for a war footing and steps have to be taken to not drag NATO fully into the war because that would just go nuclear pretty damn quick.

Simon, I’m usually with you on your analysis, but the narrative that Ukraine success is directly related to how much and how fast we send them money is false. First, they should have been able to accomplish exponentially more with what they have received so far. Second, the vast majority of the newest funds released by the Senate will actually go to replenish our own reserves, not to reinforce Ukraine. Additionally, Ukraine has sapped their manpower. They have no reserves left, so it really does not matter how much they receive at this point if they don’t have the men to operate the equipment. Russia still has significant reserves. Despite NATO efforts to weaken Russia, they are actually much more militarily powerful than they were at the beginning of the war. The world significantly underestimated their ability to spin up their military industrial complex. In short, Russia will win this war. There is no chance for Ukraine to win. Their best option at this point is to negotiate before they lose many more people. Russia was always going to win. If we had let Russia steamroll Ukraine, there would have been 60,000 Ukraine deaths instead of 600,000. Better yet, if NATO had kept their promise to stay away from Russia none of this would’ve happened in the first place.

I always enjoy Simon’s content on this channel, MegaProjects, etc. but I’d like to remind him that for many of us on the outside looking in, there are indeed far worse outcomes imaginable than the fall of Kharkiv - such as sparking a hot war war between NATO and Russia which could easily devolve into WW3 as the world takes sides. Don’t get me wrong, I’m 100% pro-Ukraine and my heart breaks for the Ukrainian people. They are a sovereign country whose borders were violated by their neighbor, and they have every right to defend themselves. However, castigating American fiscal conservatives for not wanting to fund yet another foreign war while a mountain of America’s own domestic issues pile up (rampant inflation, wild cost-of-living increases, housing crisis, border crisis, etc.) is absolutely unfair. The US government is not obligated to put Ukraine’s well-being above the well-being of its own citizens.

@@radiantsewerrat1987 Thanks. The unfortunate reality is that a total victory for Ukraine is increasingly unlikely, no matter how much funding we send. I’m tired of either being told we are either a) cowards, or b) ideologically captured by Russian propaganda. It’s neither. ALL of us are pulling for Ukraine. We simply understand that our government is operating with record levels of national debt and deficit spending. Inflation is out of control because the Federal Reserve bank keeps churning out money, which in turn makes the money we all possess worth less and less. A huge subset of the population can barely afford essentials like groceries, childcare, rental prices, much less to buy a home. We’re in a shitty situation and can no longer afford to be the world’s policeman. The scumbag authoritarians across the world like Putin and Xinping know this too, that’s why they are emboldened.
