The most likely explanation I have seen is moving south will enable them to bring artillery in range of Kharkiv. Seems to make sense to me.

It was a pretty soft incursion by the Russians. Almost no armored vehicles, guys with 72 hour packs. It seems to be more of a reconnaissance force operation.

4:50 I believe it was initially a probing attack across the front to locate weak points, but as the Russian saw more success than expected they jumped at the chance and pushed further than initially planned.

In our news in Austria the main reason stated for the offensive was to take Belgorod out of Ukrainian artillery range and to attempt to create the buffer zone that ensures that. Furthermore yesterday the news came US Secretary of State, stated that the US won't attempt to dissuade Ukraine from using American Missiles against targets within Russia itself, that they don't encourage it but will allow it.

It’s funny that people think that building fortifications on the BORDERS of your ENEMY is the same as fixing a pothole in your local neighborhood. I love how unprepared the Russians were for this kind of rapid advance since they didn't believe kharkiv was almost totally undefended and they now have to wait and bring more artillery and vehicles since this was all done only by a simple recon who probably couldn't believe their eyes how much they were progressing. If i was Ukrainian though i would start worrying.

This is out of date already. The US has no changed its stance on weapons use in Russia. It has said it doesn’t encourage it, they are free to now fight the war as it sees fit. This was known yesterday, yet this video chose not to include this vital info.

not allowing Ukraine to use western weapons in russia makes it kinda hard to protect the border. If Ukraine can't use artillery or mortars until the russian troops have crossed the border, then they have to move their defensive lines at least a few km back. That makes the entire border area a greyzone.

It is evident that only negotiation can end this terrible war; both sides need to get round the table and hammer out a deal - no one will get everything they want, but there has to be another way.

Now the reality. Two weeks before the offensive in Kharkov, Russian forces had been shelling the city’s military and energy infrastructure in order to weaken the area of offensive and lead a reconnaissance of ongoing. On May 10th, the offensive began at 5 AM, making significant progress on the frontline. Throughout the first week of the offensive there were taken 13 settlements and the whole north part of the city Volchansk. As Russian President Putin said - the offensive on the Kharkov region is necessary in order to create a buffer zone for preventing shelling of civilians in Belgorod and other regions of Russia.

It's a pity it takes so little to become part of the propaganda machine.

Ah, yes. Negative military reports. I remember having to submit an anonymous report on command and climate. I remember writing morale was low. I remember this because my "anonymous" response got me called into the 1SGs office for a verbal slaying. But he did hear me out, and pushed for my promotion. Simon, I’m usually with you on your analysis, but the narrative that Ukraine success is directly related to how much and how fast we send them money is false. First, they should have been able to accomplish exponentially more with what they have received so far. Second, the vast majority of the newest funds released by the Senate will actually go to replenish our own reserves, not to reinforce Ukraine. Additionally, Ukraine has sapped their manpower. They have no reserves left, so it really does not matter how much they receive at this point if they don’t have the men to operate the equipment. Russia still has significant reserves. Despite NATO efforts to weaken Russia, they are actually much more militarily powerful than they were at the beginning of the war. The world significantly underestimated their ability to spin up their military industrial complex. In short, Russia will win this war. There is no chance for Ukraine to win. Their best option at this point is to negotiate before they lose many more people. Russia was always going to win. If we had let Russia steamroll Ukraine, there would have been 60,000 Ukraine deaths instead of 600,000. Better yet, if NATO had kept their promise to stay away from Russia none of this would’ve happened in the first place.

I always enjoy Simon’s content on this channel, MegaProjects, etc. but I’d like to remind him that for many of us on the outside looking in, there are indeed far worse outcomes imaginable than the fall of Kharkiv - such as sparking a hot war war between NATO and Russia which could easily devolve into WW3 as the world takes sides. Don’t get me wrong, I’m 100% pro-Ukraine and my heart breaks for the Ukrainian people. They are a sovereign country whose borders were violated by their neighbor, and they have every right to defend themselves. However, castigating American fiscal conservatives for not wanting to fund yet another foreign war while a mountain of America’s own domestic issues pile up (rampant inflation, wild cost-of-living increases, housing crisis, border crisis, etc.) is absolutely unfair. The US government is not obligated to put Ukraine’s well-being above the well-being of its own citizens.
