Crisis in the Caucasus (2008): As Russian tanks rolled into South Ossetia, the world's eyes turned East. In the West the message was clear: Georgia falls victim to Russian aggression. But is our media telling us the whole story?

Today Abkhazia, previously a province of Georgia, is celebrating independence after Russian military forced Georgia out of the province. The sky flashes with fireworks and Abkhazians dance in the streets. But few outside share Abkhazia's enthusiasm. 'Russia is now directly telling all its neighbours that it will be using force -- that it is trying to restore its lost empire', says Georgi Badrize, a Georgian diplomat. Few in the West would disagree. But in Abkhazia's Parliament, president Sergey Bagapsh is giving official thanks to Russia. This day, he tells us, marks the end of decades of Georgian abuse. 'People were starving', he says. 'We couldn't treat our kids, we were not allowed to import medications'. Many Azkhazians are angered by the pro-Georgian stance of Western media. 'Everybody thinks that the Georgians deserve independence and freedom and the right to be part of the international community', says humanitarian worker Liana Kvarchelia, 'and we are not'. Bagapsh claims that it is not only the media that is biased in Georgia's favour. He provides our reporter with an armed guard and permission to enter the border region between Abkhasia and Georgia, where he claims we will find evidence that the UN and NATO were complicit in Georgia's illegally stockpiling of weapons for an attck against Abkazia. A shocking and fascinating report.

A Lot of the problems in the Former Soviet Union can be pointed to some stupid decisions of Stalin and Khruschev, Giving Ossetia Abhazia to Georgia, Crimea to Ukraine, with no regard to people.

The point at the time was to prevent nationalities uniting against the USSR so they werent stupid decisions they were well thought out descions designed to stop a common cause. this has also been done throughout history to dived and conquer. the examples would be the fall of the ottoman empire and the division of territory with mixed races e.g Iraq to prevent the nation uniting against its puppet masters of the middle east (france and england)

I would support Abkhazia except that in the early 1990s, before the Georgian civil war, Abkhazia had an ethnic Georgia majority. Those settlers were not recent ones like Chinese ones in Tibet, but have continuously lived there and formed a majority for thousands of years. Then the Abkhazians expelled them. If Georgia did not have a historical presence there, and for thousands of years, and did not have a majority during all that time, I would support Abkhazia. Since Georgia is a democracy, Abkhazia should rejoin Georgia, let the expelled Georgians return, and in return the Abkhazians will get guaranteed rights to school their children in their language, practice their culture and religion, and manage most of their own affairs. That, eventually, will be the future.

@@geoeconomics3067 So is it that Abkhazia has "always" existed, but lots of Georgians moved in over the years, and the Abkhazians ended up forcing them out for whatever reason ? I didn't realise it was an "ethnic" issue . If so, just what is "Abkhazia". A figment of someone's imagination ? Seems highly unlikely that a Bush family member would fuck up so badly as to arm the right side.

But imperialism is the act of extending a countries power and influence through diplomacy and military power and that's pretty much what we do, we have bases all over the world and we have a lot of allies even Vietnam a country I thought we would never be cool with but turns out we just needed a common enemy

So the Georgian bosses will be smarting about Russia declaring it an independent State. I missed that, bizzi. The old Georgian girl's infant grandson said "your not really a Georgian, grandma. You don't kill people !"
