When I was 10, one day I heard on the radio, that a man was robbing a small corner store in San Francisco. A 75 year old man, came in and disarmed him of his shotgun. When the police arrived, said was a Cossack. This was back in 1975. San Francisco has a strong Russian community, and I wish them only to grow.

Old people like myself don't need to be a Cossack. US states issue a license for concealed firearm carry following a back- ground check to ensure us old folks lack criminality and pesky mental issues. Allowing me to shoot dead an immediate threat to life of myself or others. I've been previously paid for firearm training and usage. In private and public employment sectors.' I prefer to appear harmless. Go figure.

Russians have Cossacks; great Orthodox worriors, they love fighting, drinking, singing and dancing. Just like Russians Serbian people have similar worrior part. Most part of Serbian people are Slavic Orthodox(there is also katolic Serbs-Croatians and muslim Serbs-Bosniacks). Serbians have Crnogorce(Montenegrians) and Kraišnike(border worriors, now they are Orthodox minority in Croatia). Both love to dance and sing, eat and drink, fight and love. But there is one more part called Gusari( or Husars), after fall Kosovo 1389. a lot of Serbian cavalry escape in Poland. In Poland they become powerfull mercenaries army, for centuries they have been model for each cavalry in the world. Generaly, Slavs are the biggest worriors in the world.

Much like their brothers in the caucasian mountains and the steppes of central asia. The cosacks are a mix of tatars and escaped russian serfs and they were inclusieve to all.

The cossacks helped stem the tide of turkish muslim invaders for centuries and so saved christian (orthodox) civilization in Eurasia and the northern world from barbarism. They were terribly repressed by the bolshevists and Stalinś henchmen. But they somehow survived. Glad that their culture and tradition flourishes again! In late 1991, just before the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, a delegation of Terek Cossacks had petitioned the reinstatement of the old Terek Oblast which during Czarist times encompassed most of the southern Republics of the Russian Federation like Chechnya and North and South Ossetia. The Cossack argument was that in the late 19th Century, the Terek Oblast was a prosperous agricultural region and today's Caucasus republics are failed states dependent on largess from Moscow. For better or for worse, the Cossack petition was denied.

1/2 You can't make a comparison to a modern society engulfed in whatever youth subculture the mass media throws at it to a very conservative homogenous society of medieval Rus. There is absolutely no logic in that comparison. In addition, where the hell did Cossacks take those oseledec haircuts from? Nobody in the caucuses has oseledec haircuts. In russia muslims have more freedom than muslims who live in europe and usa. Of cpurse in Russia everything is not ok but Russia never destroys cultures and beliefs like Europeans and Americans. I am from Turkey and I know in central Asia some Turkish tribes who are shamanists or have other beliefs and I don't think in my country people show tollarance against such beliefs. In Russia people have different beliefs and live peacefully.

We are Russian Cossacks our family. My grandfather and grandmother were Russian Cossack before WWI. I was taught the Cossack ways. Stunt Horse riding Included. The language as well. Swords and daggers. I even wore the Costume. Kennith Autie Umperovitch.
