Russia made a big mistake listening to western institutions like the IMF/World Bank by following the service based economic model. They should have done what China did and focused on industry which they could have done better than China. Once Russia had a competitive industrial base they could have gradually gone more into the service sector.

Hi Tom, thanks for the amazing video about consumer export products, but you forget the Russian energy export market of the Russian oil major’s. Maybe this is worth a new video.

"service based economic model" - that's not a thing. America has plenty of mfg, as does the rest of the developed world. The issue is employment. Western mfg is more automated, so the service sectors employ a greater number of people. That doesn't make the economy "based" on services. Google up export maps of the top-10 economies.

Ladas were sold in India during soviet Era but not now. India can be a hot market for Ural motorcycles. Their design look like Jawa and Royal Enfield. These are most loved motorcycles now. Infact, Honda also had to make a motorcycle of such kind. The side car feature would definitely attract more customers as many families can't shift to cars because cars are expensive in India compared to motorcycles. And side cars are usually kept in scooters for handicapped ppl. I think Ural could definitely change the trend.

Interesting video. Funny what you mention about Masha and the Bear. I've seen it. Personally as a "senior", I think a lot of modern parents don't understand that kids _do really know_ the difference between reality and cartoon. I and millions of kids grew up laughing, yes actually laughing, at Wile E. Coyote unsuccessfully attempting to blow to smithereens, smash, or otherwise obliterate Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny getting the best of Tasmanian Devil and Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam constantly shooting his guns and his mouth, and later on Bart Simpson engaging in all kinds of reprobate behavior. And weren't The Three Stooges nothing less than live action cartoon antics? And after all that and more I and millions of other kids who _still_ enjoy them didn't and haven't become psychopaths or anti-social. Even today, SpongeBob is one of the most known cartoons around the world _precisely because_ of its irreverent humor. Well, that's my rant. One class of export that maybe should have been in this list is Russian fine porcelain china, particularly the cobalt blue variety. I've seen this here in the US and in many other countries.

I’m in Iowa, USA and 20 years ago a man I knew bought a Ural because it had an old motorcycle look and a side car. After a very short time he had to have the engine rebuilt and replace some major internal components. He wasn’t too upset though because the motorcycle wasn’t very expensive to start with.

This is true, because in the USSR, and later in Russia, most of the equipment had the prefix “do it yourself” due to frequent breakdowns. What we have really always done well is the weapon.😂

Russian tea used to be (still is?) something different from the English tea. I was a kid in the 1990 when my family got as a gift some Russian tea from USSR. Those were the last years of USSR. One of my relatives visited a Soviet republic and brought some products. First, the tea, that had a very nice special taste. Searching on Amazon, it seems there are many brands selling Russian style tea, I wonder if it has that taste. Other products from USSR I got were fishing line, I was into fishing, and playing cards with very cool Russian artwork and Russian letters. Back to tea, I googled and found Kusmi Tea a brand of Russian tea, but headquartered in Paris, it has some very traditional packaging and art. Look for example at the round flat tin of Kusmi Tea Anastasia. It is strange that in Russia they try to present themselves as English while in the West, Russian tea still has a good reputation and a demand.

Many Americans do not properly appreciate the freedom of speech that our Constitution provides. It does not stop the federal government from violating our rights but it does provide a course of action to protect our rights. Your portrayal of everyday Americans and Russians seems very even handed and shows that our peoples have much in common. I have found that the same is true of the Ukrainian people and it is a shame that the actions of governments frequently betray the character of their citizens.

The USSR used to produce tons of tiny scale model cars and trucks. It was mainly for its internal market I suppose since the markings engraved underneath, as well as on the individual boxes, were all done in Russian. Today if you do a Web search for Russian scale models you get thousands and thousands of Ladas, GAZ, ZIS, Zil and Mokvitch on sites like eBay or Amazon. Scale model car collectors in Europe and some other countries seem to love them. In front of me on my desk I have a 1/43 scale model of a Moskvitch 412 that says CCCP underneath it. I bought it during a summer vacation in Finland. It is a very well made model with only a tiny fault in the paint job. Its castings are superb and it rolls really well. When I think of Russian workmanship and quality consumer goods I think of those scale model cars and of Fabergé jewelry. Yes, Fabergé did not only do eggs for the tsars. They also did less costly jewelry and sold it in stores in many countries. In Canada we stopped importing Ladas in 1998. In fact the Lada company stopped exporting them because the Canadian road safety regulations kept getting more and more strict for automakers. The same thing had happened years before to Canadian importations from Britain and France. Citroens, Renaults and Peugeots all disappeared because of the more severe safety regulations. Only the Koreans, the Japanese and the Germans survived and even managed to take more Canadian market share from the Americans. The competition between automakers from these 4 countries is ferocious. The Ladas didn't have a chance.

Russia had these problems with Russian Revolution and communism destroying and abandoning most of the previous culture and brands, then with the collapse of USSR most of the culture, products and brands created during that period were abandoned and destroyed as well, so they have to start yet again. This radical changes were disastrous for Russia. And things are not looking too good with the West keen of containing Russia (meaning sabotaging and slowing its normal development). Also this type of leadership is very problematic when it comes to succession. The succession of Putin will bring great dangers for Russia including the worse scenarios possible like civil wars and separatism. Unless he knows what he's doing and there is a powerful guy ready to fill the gap.

Russian made machine-tooling and agricultural machinery (including high end harvesters, tractors) are some other good examples, although most of those are for internal market, but still. Also, you could cite any of the big military industry sectors, aircrafts or anti-air systems are huge exports of russia. Naval shipyards is another big sector, be it military or new families of tankers etc. Russia being caricatured as "living off gas exports" is becoming annoying as fucc, norway & canada have a bigger share of their GDP made up of oil exports than russia, it's a fact, and yet nobody berates those countries for it. Russia is also leading in various minerals exports, metals, and has record high cereal production for years, big part of it exported. Oh and, Russia makes and exports excellent nuclear energy reactors, and is leading in research and developement for future techs in this area. Also, don't forget Russia is a huge player in the space industry, still exporting rocket engines to the USA, or simply renting space travels to various private or state entities from all over the world, to launch their goods (satelites most of the time) into space.

Any a child could understand that under the circumstances (Putins evil motivations and his misguided perception of how the West would react) the war was on. Whew. C'mon man!
