The Russian Navy’s only aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, was expected to leave port this spring for the first time in seven years. However, the ship remains docked.
Several factors have been suggested for this delay, including financial constraints exacerbated by the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The refit has been troubled by several deadly accidents and fires, leading to speculation that the Kremlin may consider scrapping the warship-an option supported by many naval analysts.
In light of these challenges, the main Russian design bureau for military shipbuilding has recently unveiled a brand-new design for a light aircraft carrier.
