I've been living in Kiev, Ukraine for the last 4 years and a lot of people have been asking me what I think about the recent escalations with Russia. The threat of an imminent invasion. So I made this video to share my thoughts. Normally I make more uh... fun videos... about magic! :)

I would pack a bag of the most important things (passport, cash, water, and a few clothes) and just have it ready if you need to take shelter or just leave. And have 2-3 planned routes out of the country, and your phone will probably not work that great if attacked so I would guess a normal paper map would be good.

From some personal experience seeing things similar to this in the military, I'll just say this. No amount of personal items or RU-vid equipment are worth the cost of your life. No matter how inconvenient it would be to leave. Just please consider that. Best wishes

Good point. It made me think that it can also look dodgy as hell to be 'caught' with a bag full of camera equipment... not to people who know Jason, but when you see how even a bible will be seen as evidence of insurgency or terrorist motives in some places, a bag full of camera equipment can easily be twisted into intelligence-gathering tools. In that sense the dog would indeed be more pertinent... dogs are family, cameras can be bought. A kickstarter would be filled in a day.

Something to consider: in modern warfare, one of the first steps is to target and disrupt primary infrastructure - power plants, major road/railways, and... airports. Through the use of air- and long-range missile power, this can be done before a single troop crosses the border. I'm not saying "panic!!", I'm saying that waiting may leave you stranded, so plan accordingly.

It is simply incredible difficult to make a decision, when it is only possible to decide if you could see the future, just then it would be possible to think clearly, but like this: it is impossible to get a clear view. Thanks for this video, it's interesting to get an inside view. A few points to note from a human rights and international relations professional: Poland has already turned their borders into emergency zones controlled by the military to keep out refugees (they say it's covid, but really it's Syrians), and Turkey is also not particularly refugee-friendly at the moment. Also, don't underestimate the speed with which troops will cut through the country, especially since they will encounter no resistance whatsoever. You will likely not have the time you mention you would have. It's hard to tell what the best option is, but I'd recomment to at least have a plan in place and a suitcase packed. Lastly "Oh it's an American, we don't care"... said no Russian official ever ;) That being said, thanks for the insight and stay safe.

Obviously the first thing is to get all your documents and paperwork together in case of emergency evac. Best thing to do is plan ahead as much as you can. Get visa paperwork started for another country now as a precaution even if you never need to leave it's at least an option.

You certainly did relieve the tension there at 7:45 Man i was laughing out loud here! (and the American spy joke at the end) I was visiting my wife’s family 2 weeks ago in Lviv (I heard some people are now also taking their money from the banks). I hope it’ll all go good and doesn’t escalate further. For now I think the best is indeed what you’re doing now, just watching the news, think rationally and hope for the best. From living in New York and seeing my state get hit first and hard with covid, it all started out where people weren't sure or not if they should be worried and before too long everyone was unpacking the stores, hospitals were being overwhelmed and fortunately it was a virus not an army. The embassy is right, if you don't leave before an invasion it will likely be very difficult to leave as everyone will be certain what is happening and many will hop on that bus. Maybe get out and see what happens, maybe you could always return?

What a horrible situation. I live in China and we were faced with similar choices a couple of years ago (for very different reasons). I’m pleased I stayed here instead of running back home. The advice we got from home was to get away when everything first started - which didn’t make any sense to me. So I decided to sit it out. Few rough months at one point but seems to have worked out. I think governments say “get out now” as fairly standard advice in many situations. Good luck with everything! Will keep an eye on it.

Oh wow, I totally forgot you were in Kiev! I know that the situation is blown out of proportion over here in the USA, but it's still scary to think about what might happen. I hope it doesn't escalate, but if it does, I hope you two will be feeling better so you can evacuate if you need to! I'd say have a plan to at least get out of the city if things get really bad, but I'm inclined to agree that an invasion going straight for Kiev seems unlikely. Whatever happens, stay safe man, we're all here pulling for you.

Wow that's a tough call Jason. Hard to know. Potential consequences are usually not so drastic or varied. When will you be able to travel? You might ask your embassy whether an exception could be made in those circumstances. Besides that, how about taking a holiday somewhere like Turkey? Worst case scenario, you can't get back and you lose your stuff and you cancel your rent and bills through your bank. Best case, things calm down and you return and you've had a slightly weird holiday where you feel safe but anxious. Obviously unless you can evacuate with virus you're stuck for now. Depends how quickly things progress.

Take it one day at a time, just make sure that if you decide to leave you have two ways to go and a grab and go bag packed incase you miss your moment and things speed up faster then planned. Thanks for the update, might be interesting to see what is going on for Americans in Russia like are they being told to leave Russia itself and are they being monitored more closely by Russian officials. When other countries move all their diplomats out it can be a bad sign but it could also be for show too-sorry that’s all not very helpful. Another question I’d ask is if the 100,000 troops invade will the Ukraine just lay down arms? Like how much actually fighting do you think there will be? If they just lay down arms there might just be low level resistance fighting here and there and not much violent warfare and you’ll be able to get out.

It's a difficult situation. Here are my thoughts. While you both have COVID see what you can do to store and protect your valuables. Maybe leave them with friends further towards the west of Ukraine or perhaps some sort of storage facility in that direction. When you no longer have COVID, assuming an invasion has not happened yet, take a cheap vacation to somewhere in the Baltic or Eastern Europe. Rest up in a cheap Hostel in one of those countries for a few weeks and keep an eye on the situation from afar. If the situation escalates you'll be glad not to be stuck there. If it doesn't, and things calm down, you can travel back and resume your normal life in Kiev. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Yes I’m replying to my own post. Just a thought to pass on. Since Kiev is the capitol the first move is to take over the seat of power. If Putin doesn’t get what he wants from Nato or the White House the chest beating will be over and Russia will invade. The UK is reporting Russian troops inside Ukraine borders already. War is imminent I believe.

Is there a storage unit there you can rent? Put what you can in storage and take a vacation as soon as your medical status allows. Or just leave your stuff in your apartment and make arrangement to continue paying the rent. If your stuff gets destroyed you have escaped with your lives. If all goes well you can return to life as normal.

can someone of you drive? maybe get a cheap car that just drives. In case of an invasion you'd be not the only one trying to get out... With a car you can at least go west or south and figure out how to continue after depending on the situation. And your luggage is also easier to transport and gives a bit more space for extra luggage. Lets hope nothing happens and stay safe!

Well, from a German perspective, the first thing I think about when hearing 'invasion', I imagine fast streams of refuges flooding the streets. Could be because we see a lot about WW2, who knows. But I would reckon once an invasion becomes imminent it would be too late to leave. On the other hand - who am I to know, I live in total safety and cannot imagine of even a threat of war... What would I do? I don't know. Probably stay at home. Small, and probably rather unimportant hint: Anitbiotics only work against bacteria - but Covid is a viral infection. Antibiotics will be of no help against covid. You should not use them if it's not sure you got an infection by bacteria (and the antibioticum actually works against the bacteria you got). Apart from the risk of producing resistant bacteria, there are other threads as well. I was sick for the last 2 months, because I got antibiotics. And that antibioticum inflicted a yeast infection in my throat - which lasted for the last 2 month. Anyhow, good luck! Hope you remain well!

Valuable perspective and thanks for the video. Minor comment, as far as I am aware, Kyiv is the preferred latinisation of the capital. In my circles, Kiev is the Russian-speaking variant and is frequently used these days to convey pro-Russian sentiment.

I don’t know why but I thought you lived in Mariupol, got a bit more worried when that crossed my mind. Hope you remain safe and that we see a de-escalation soon. Perhaps finding a place in Lviv for a short while to see what happens? Check and prepare possible roads and rail, and keep one backpack prepared to go asap. Rations, map, compass, knife, tarp, lifestraw. As a worse case. If you are prepared for the worse case scenario you are prepared for most other scenarios.
