In the Russian dance Berezka, women move with such short steps that they look like they're gliding across the stage. During some moves, they move as if they're on rollers. The dance is performed by the Berezka Dance Ensemble.

Imagine learning that and floating down the hallways of a hotel at night to scare the other guests 😀 maybe you can just stand on a roomba though? 🤔

In the clip that starts at 1:15, you can see their feet moving under their hem. It's not super-short steps, it's stepping while keeping your upper body absolutely still.

@@Ryleet888 the illusion is mainly given away by the width of the dresses. The dresses must both be floor length to hide the feet, and also have enough room to disguise any movements under them. Ones with smaller skirts show movement, which is why the illusion doesn’t work so well

Saying that the shortness of the steps is what makes it look like gliding is FOR SURE a misdirect. It has to be something like the way marching bands march
@JimC
@JimC 3 месяца назад
Or the captioner just took (or heard) a wild-ass guess instead of searching for the explanation. The fundamental idea is easy, but doing it this perfectly takes LOTS of practice.

Actually this is not a russian dance. This style of floating dance belongs to the indigenous peoples of north caucasus (eg. Circassians, which russians commited a genocide towards btw). The russian choreographer did appropiate it. Btw cossacks also appropiated the costumes and dances from the north caucasians.
@atheadax

@@1xyz6992 It's all cultural. Russian and other Slavic cultures originated from there.
@1xyz6992
@1xyz6992 2 года назад
@@atheadax that's not true. Slavic people did not originate from the caucasus. The real indegenous inhabitants of the caucasus are the caucasian peoples like ingush, dagistanis, circassians (adygheans) etc. And this dance where you dance on your toes, which look like your floating is originally the (female) dance of the circassians. This is literally the national way of dancing of circassians. We do dance mainly on our toe tips. Even the costumes of the russian costumes and dance style are appropriated from the circassians (costume known as cossak costume is called cherkesska, cherkes is what russians call circassians). The survinig circassians had to leave the caucasus. And live in the diaspora. I am also a diaspora circassian. We do dance the floating dance. Beyozka which according to my researches was created in 1948 by nadezhda nadezhdina. If the cossacks appropriated the costumes why should a choreographer not appropriate a dance style. And this dance If you not believe me just research it. Search for circassian (female).
