Sorry, but what does "ty pesen" mean in the second line? "You songs"? He is talking about "these songs", right? Would something like "tyh pesen" or "etyx pesen" make more sense? Like in: "ne poy krasavica pri mne tyh pesen Gruzii pjechalnoj..." Or: "не пой этих песен печальной" Maybe "etyh" had too many syllables for the verse, so Pushin shortened it to "tyh" ?

I think 'ty' in this case does mean 'you'. The order of the words in a normal sentence (i.e. non-poetic) could be 'ty ne poy krasavica pri mne pesen Gruzii pjechalnoj'.The English translation of this sentence is: Do not sing, beautiful one, songs of sorrowful Georgia in my presence'. In Russian, the pronoun is usually omitted in the imperative form, but I guess Pushkin used 'ty' so as to not disrupt the flow of the poem ( if you have a look at the poem alone, the verses alternate between 8 and 9 syllables each). Similarly, in English the 'you' is implied in the imperative form: i.e. (you) do not sing etc etc.I hope this helps!

SiaElleB I thought exactly what you are thinking, but I could not convince myself that “ty” could make sense at this place in a sentence. Is Russian your first language? It’s not mine.... I think he already addressed her when he said “krasvica”. Why should he need another “you”? But “pesen” need something in front of them to indicate which songs he means (the songs that are currently being sung). Like in “don’t sing these songs” we need to say “these”. “Ne poj etyh pesen” makes perfect sense. But the verse would be too long, so maybe Pushkin shortened it to “tyh”?

He talks about “these songs,” right. He uses "ty" here for two reasons. 1) To save the flow 2) It can also give a little bit of higher temperature of feelings. Like "Please stop singing, I'm already tired so much about it!"

Russian language for singers Thanks for your reply. Would you agree that “ne poy krasavica pri mne etyh pesen Gruzii piechalnoj” makes more sense and has a better flow? It just has one syllable too many... but etyh is very close to tyh if you say the e very quickly.... it’s almost there, don’t you agree? It’d be great to see a picture of the manuscript with Pushkin’s handwriting of this poem....

@@st14 This is very interesting idea! But one syllable is enough to break the rhythm. Pushkin was a very accurate poet and accurately observed the metrical foot. Here he uses his favorite metrical foot - iambus.

Hello! We've already discussed this in the comments below. Then more details. here is the wrong word order in the sentence. You can change it like this: Hey you (ты), my beauty (красавица), don't sing (не пой) beside me (при мне) songs (песен) of sorrow (печальной) Georgia (Грузии)
