Caste system is formalised more under British rule. Caste is also not an indian word. I heard it is a Portuguese word called casta. But india has a community system called jati. India also has social order system called varna system. Varna system has degraded into hierarchy levels in society. The upper level exploited lower level. It happened all over the world at that time not only in india. In rest of the world it is class system where ruling society exploited farmer class and others. When british came to india instead of abolishing it, they introduced it in government and education.
