This song was written about the war in Ireland but more specifically it was about the bombing in Warrington carried out by the IRA in 1993. Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, two young children, died. It was in my hometown and me and my mum were due to get the bus in to town. We heard about it on the news and obviously never went to town that day. I was 7 at the time and I remember it vividly. There's still a plaque on bridge Street for the two boys which I pass when I'm in town and I always spare a thought for them. Anyway. Brilliant song and beautiful reaction.

Not totally correct. It was the last drop for her. But as you can see in the clip, they used a lot of footage of UK soldiers in Northern ireland too (with also enough blood on their hands). It is NOT about sides, but about tragedy of war and how brainless people become. The BBC even boycotted this song! I wonder why :P

Perhaps partially. But i think you are not listening to the song where 1916 is mentioned and pictures of soldiers in Belfast and all over Northern Ireland . Funny how Brits only see wrong when it's done against them but not when they do it to others . When they do it they make excuses for it and try to justify it no matter how corrupt and insidious it is and it is . The Kangaroo Courts proved that as did torture internment and police ( the RUC ), and British soldier killing squads involved in murder in Northern Ireland mainly against Catholics Nationalists and Republicans . But i bet you weren't told that part of it .

You are correct - it is specifically about the murder three-year-old Johnathan Ball and 12-year-old Tim Perry who had gone into town to buy Mother’s Day cards. At the heart of the song is But you see, it’s not me It’s not my family In your head, in your head, they are fighting She is saying even though I’m Irish, I didn’t do this. In her words “it’s some idiots living on the past” … in other words “what the fuck is wrong with you” Ultimately, the single was released just a few weeks after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. Zombie is considered a protest song against the Northern Ireland conflict. Dolores O'Riordan wrote the lyrics to the song during the band's 1993 tour of England in memory of two children (Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry) who were killed in an IRA bombing in Warrington on March 20, 1993. Essential passages refer to the Easter Rising of 1916 and its traumatic consequences. RIP Dolores

Never be sorry for crying at a song like this. It shows empathy to your fellow humans, not to show empathy is not to be human. I was 11 years old on 30th January 1972, Bloody Sunday. I was in Belfast with my family visiting my uncle who was in the British armed forces serving in Northan Ireland. I saw things that day I will never 'Un-see'. I didn't understand what was happening when we were rushed out of the country under armed guard by the British army but, I learned many years later to hate my mothers brother because of the part he played in the atrocity in the modern day troubles. This song acts as a reminder to me to never turn a blind eye to hatred, intolerance, discrimination, pain and suffering. Embrace your sad feelings, they bring you closer to your own humility.

And "governments" stopped representing the people a long time ago. All governments all serve the same group. Their loyalty and allegiance doesn't lie with the people of the nations they "run", but by global powers and policies. They're all puppets and when the string of war gets pulled, the mindless leader dances to it's tune.

The song isn't from 2009. It predates RU-vid and the internet we know of today by a lot, it's from 1994 and one of the most well known anti-war songs globally. It's almost weird how relevant this song is today, and specifically for Russia. Not just as an anti-war song itself, but even the title seems oddly relevant, but I especially find one part of the lyrics so damn relevant to the Russian population: "When the violence causes silence - We must be mistaken" They're completely detached from all the suffering that they are causing, stay completely silent. This country will never not be a mafia state if no one is doing anything against it. No one can change this but them. All of this is exactly why Ukraine had the Euromaidan, why so many former Soviet Union states wanted to get away from their former masters in the Kreml. Silence is compliance.

This was such a great reaction, this song brings me to tears every time! My partner is Irish and has taught me so much about the Troubles. Some extra context for this song is that it was written in response to a bomb attack in Warrington, England by the IRA (Irish Republican Army - they were the Irish Catholic fighting for a Republic) which killed 2 young boys who were getting their mum a mother's day card. Even though Dolores is Irish she is speaking out against the violence of both sides here, hence the line "when the violence causes silence we have been mistaken" which references the tragedy of the attack. Really interesting to see your thoughts on it under the current circumstances, and please don't apologise for showing emotion - it is a tragic song.

I used to love playing this song at parties or just jamming. As a bass player, I love how this song is carried by the bassline. Check out the cover of this song done by Bad Wolves. It was supposed to be done with Delores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, but she died just before they could do the project together. Bad Wolves released the song after her death and donated the proceeds to her children, if I recall correctly.

Self defense is the only legitimate excuse to fight. Or defense of innocent such as children. If those who are evading lay down there weapons and go home deal with the issues that are facing there on country. The war would be over. . I always feel bad for the innocent caught in wars

We so innocent we didn’t realise what was to happen. Forced apart and never met again. This is such a powerful song which truly shows the pain and destruction of conflict and division. The vocal technique that Delores O'Riordan uses in this song is called "Keening" and it's a traditional form of Irish singing where she lets her voice intentionally "break". She was a national treasure to the people of Ireland and died much too soon. Irina, you should do another reaction to the remake of this song by Bad Wolves, who Delores was set to record with when she died. Their performance brings the meaning of this song up to date and truly honors Delores and The Cranberries.

Its not called keening its called sean nos .which delores actually studied in ireland she never studied keening which would be weird as a woman anyway because keening is done by a man...keening is a type of spoken word at a funeral or a wake where someone usually recites the story of the person's life and their family lineage in the middle of which there is usually a melancholy sean nos song...with a wailing lament ..they can also sing sean nos at a funeral but not all sean nos songs are sad some are happy etc ..I am from ireland. Keening is not actually singing or wailing ..its spoken the wailing part or the singing is just called sean nos ... I think people confused up the keening with sean nos because keener comes from the irish word go caoin meaning to cry ...(which sounds like keen if you don't speak irish) ..but she isn't really keening here
@bobbygoromajima

Sorry this is not keening. Keening is an expression of grief which dates back to pagan times but was pretty much extinguished by the Catholic Church. Not really sung by a woman. You’d generally hear it a funerals or festivals like Beltane or Samhain.

Delores had such an amazing voice. Tie that to this song and what its about. It hits hard and is just so powerful. Im from Scotland and grew up in England during the 80s and 90s. I remember hearing about the troubles on the news all the time and even the bombings in London which was near to where we stayed. The lyrics get me everytime. Also living in glasgow, there are two massive football teams one catholic(Celtic) and one protestant(Rangers)and although they were founded upon religous backgrounds, even to this day there is still bigotry and animosity between the two sets of fans. Ive had verbal and physical abuse in the street just by wearing my teams colours.
